Pirate Dictionary Greeting Ahoy = Hello People Matey = Friend Me hearties = Friends Sea dog = a person who has lived and worked at sea for a long time All hands = everyone Scourge of the seven seas = the worst of the worst kind of person Scallyway = a playful/cheeky insult for someone Scurvy dog = can be a playful insult or really mean Landlubbers = people who live on the land (anyone not a pirate or a sailor) - generally an insult Son of a biscuit eater = a delicate person who might find life as a pirate hard Bilge Rat = a bad insult referring to the rats that live in the filthiest part of the ship Hornswaggler = cheater Goose = injured man
Pirate Dictionary Emotions Sink me! = surprised Shiver me timbers = You must be joking, I can't believe it, or I am shocked! Batten down the hatches = get ready, trouble is brewing Fair winds = good luck Food Grub = Food Grog = Drink Hard Tack = Biscuit (usually with maggots in it) Cackle fruit = chicken eggs

Arr! = Yes Arr? = I have a question Savvy? = Do you understand Parlay = Talk Smartly = do it quickly Avast ye = pay attention stop and listen X marks the spot = Where the treasure is hidden Take a caulk = have a nap Show a leg = wake up Thar she blows = oh look a whale! Scuttlebutt = gossip, the scuttlebutt was the fresh water barrel, so it was the place pirates gathered and gossiped. Pirate Dictionary Pirating Bounty = A reward Booty = treasure Plunder = steal only the cargo in the hull Pillage = Steal everything cargo and even personal possessions Doubloons / pieces of eight = money Maroon = to strand a sailor in a boat or on an island Gravy = Blood Goose without Gravy = injured man but no blood Quarter = mercy Give no quarter = show no mercy Dead mean tell no tales = a warning not to betray secrets or cross a pirate because they don't leave survivors The Black Spot = an omen of bad luck

Pirate Code Arh me hearties, this is the pirate code sometimes called the ship’s articles, these were the rules all the crew had to sign on the ship’s charter and swear an oath of allegiance before they could weigh anchor. 1. Every pirate gets to vote on matters of importance 2. Every pirate has equal measure of captured goods, 3. If yer steal from the crew ye will be marooned 4. All quarrels within the crew will be left on land and settled by pistol or sword! 5. All hands will keep ye pistols and cutlass clean and ready to fight 6. Ye will not gamble on cards or dice 7. No boy or woman will be brought aboard without consent on pain of death. 8. Ye will not speak of deserting yer crew, ship or captain, before yer helped pillage yer share of £1000 on pain of death or marooning, but should ye be injured or lose a limb yer crew will give ye $800 9. All lights and candles to be put out at 8 pm – bed time is very important if ye want enough energy to be a pirating 10. ALL Musicians to rest on Sundays. Now solemnly swear on Davy Jones that that ye will uphold the pirates’ code!
