Charolais Genetic Disorders: Similar to other breeds of cattle, Charolais too have known genetic conditions. The two in which we test for in Australia are; 1) Myophosphorylase Deficiency (MYO), if affected, prevents an animals ability to mobilise glucose and results in loss of muscle function & exercise intolerance; and 2) Progressive Ataxia (BPA), a neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system which if affected, results in an animals inability to stand. An animal can be an unaffected carrier and live a normal life, but if bred to another carrier can produce affected offspring. Our sale bulls are tested for these disorders and any carriers are identified on the Charolais Australia website as well as included within the individual lot commentary. As they are recessive conditions, they shouldn’t be of concern to our cross breeders, however we wouldn’t recommend to our purebred Charolais clients. A paternal brother to Red Rock in a homozygous polled package, Rockerfella shares the softness and doing ability inherited from Next Gen. We retained Red Rock in the ‘R’ year, while Rockerfella sold for $100,000. A Trait Leader, he ranks in the top 3% for both Weaning Weight and Fat Cover. Limited semen remains for ET use, but his influence will continue through his sons in our herd. His first 18 sale sons topped at $40,000 and averaged $21,000. We believe this year’s draft is even stronger, with five outstanding yearlings leading off this section at Lot 43, 44, 45, 46 & 47. We rate Red Rock as one of the best bulls we’ve bred, and with more than 300 progeny on the ground, he has certainly lived up to that reputation. Now six years of age, he remains ‘sound as a bell’ and continues to be walked and heavily used in our AI program. Moderate framed, thick topped and deep quartered, with excellent feet, balance and doing ability, he is everything we strive to breed in a modern Charolais sire. When we inspected Spectra in New Zealand, we saw a homozygous polled sire with the extra frame, bone and power that are difficult to find in a PP package. We selected him to add lift and substance over our more moderate-framed females, while his soft, supple skin has become a standout feature of his progeny. Represented by nine sons this year, many were used as yearlings in the stud herd. They have a strong northern focus, offering the growth and capacity to target heavier market specifications. A first-release sire that we rate very highly, so much so that we have retained a son this year—Palgrove Vegas V2259E (P). We admire Stallone’s skin type, muscle pattern and balanced performance data.
