Revision of Pupil Book 1 Skills 1
Revision of Letter Sounds Where can you hear or learn all the sounds? Letter pronunciation guide is on each page of the Teacher Book for Pupil Book 1 – for each letter sound. Revision of Blending • Do blending in the pupil books, using the finger to track the sounds • Go to the Word Bank in your Teacher’s Book – find it now! • Blending song (see next slide) and arm blending • For Primary 2 children practice blending with decodable stories or reading real reading books in small groups. • Find decodable stories for your blackboard on page 87 of your Teacher’s Book • Find Phrases on page 65 of your Teacher’s Book – write these often on the board! If a child cannot blend, they cannot read! What does blending help us to do?
The Blending Song You can sing the blending song for any words with three sounds (phonemes). Here are some examples: sat shop cat dog this wet run Page 63 Teacher’s Guide
Some words are difficult to work out because: 1. They are very irregular, such as you, two, said 2. They are frequently used words which have a phonic element that has not been taught yet, such as like, all, here Revision of Tricky Words 3. Quiz • Where do you find phrases to write on the board? § Where do you find decodable stories for the blackboard? § Where can you find lots of words to practise reading skills? § Where can you find the lyrics to the Jolly Songs? If your Primary 2 pupils have not used these with your pupils go back and practice some daily.

Before you teach Pupil Book 2 you need to know: § how to count the sounds in words § how to teach the alphabet song and alphabet names § How to use the word bank in your Teacher’s Guide § Where to find decodable stories in your Teacher’s Guide § How to teach ‘magic e’ § How to teach vowels and alternative spellings …let’s do this now!
The Alphabet and Capital Letters Letter names (or the alphabet) should be taught after ALL the letter sounds are learnt. The formation of capital letters is covered in Pupil Book 2.

VOWELS: If one way doesn’t work, try another…. Read these words…try the short way and then the long way - go - tiger - saying - me - she Sometimes a vowel on its own is pronounced the long way.
