In this Texas heat, when every- one’s trash is smelling extra awful, the CREW AT REPUBLIC SERVICES always works so hard with smiles, waving at everyone. Great service really does make such a difference. The list of things DAVID HART has done for this community is too long to name! He has organized water drives for local first responders, funeral assistance for local families and offered HVAC help for seniors and people in need. This year, he’s also organizing a back-to-school drive and concert. Then she rallied others to do the same, making sure that any neighbor who wanted a ribbon on their tree had one placed at their home, creating a beautiful tribute to a very loved and missed young man. LIZZY, a Wal-Mart employee, was happily singing her heart out with an incredible, Disney soundtrack-worthy voice. You simply started noticing them.You simply started noticing them. Psychologists connect this to selective attention and something called the frequency illusion. Our brains are constantly filter- ing more information than we could ever consciously process, so we tend to notice what we have decided is important. Once something has our attention, we begin spotting it all around us. That is the idea behind The Heart of 760. We are asking everyone in the community to start looking for the good - not only the grand gestures, but the simple, everyday moments we often pass without acknowledging. The restau- rant server who made your family laugh, a cashier who was es- pecially patient, an employee who remembered your name, or a neighbor who brought in your trash can. These moments may seem small, but small things have a way of becoming bigger. When someone makes your day a little better and you take the time to tell them, you make their day better, too. They feel seen. They feel appreciated. And when people feel appreciated, they are more likely to carry that kindness into their next interac- tion. One good moment can become another. It only takes a moment. Look at someone’s name tag, ask their first name or simply remember where you met them. Then send us a sentence or two telling us what they did. You do not need their full name. Imagine that person later seeing their name inside 760 Mag- azines. Your simple thank-you could brighten their week, month, or year. . Maybe, as more people begin looking for kindness, we will all become a little more intentional about giving it. Maybe we will smile more, slow down, offer help and treat one another with a little extra patience - not simply because our names might ap- pear in a magazine, but because we are reminded that even the smallest actions can leave a lasting impression . CATCH LEAKS EARLY Place battery operated water-detec- tor alarms inside sink cabinets, near the washing machine and beside the water heater. They can alert you to a slow leak before it damages cabinets, flooring or drywall. STEAM WRINKLES AWAY Toss two or three ice cubes into the dryer with a few wrinkled garments. Run the dryer for approximately 10 minutes so the melting ice creates steam.* GATHER LOOSE PET HAIR Put on a clean rubber glove, dampen it slightly and run your hand across upholstered furniture. The rub- ber helps gather loose pet hair into clumps that are easy to pick up. CLEAN DETAILED BASEBOARDS Spray a small amount of foaming glass cleaner onto textured or heav- ily detailed baseboards. The foam clings to grooves instead of immedi- ately running onto the floor.* SHAVING CREAM ON CARPET SPOTS Plain white foaming shaving cream may help loosen certain water-based carpet stains. Blot rather than scrub.* USE A POTATO ON LIGHT RUST For light rust on sturdy metal tools or pans, sprinkle a cut potato with bak- ing soda and gently rub the affected area.* LET THE BLENDER CLEAN ITSELF Immediately after using the blender, fill it halfway with warm water and add a drop of dish soap. Blend for several seconds, rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry. BRIGHTEN RUBBER SHOE SOLES Apply a small amount of plain white toothpaste to the rubber edges of sneakers. Scrub gently with an old toothbrush, then wipe clean with a damp cloth.* FLOSS YOUR FAUCETS Slide plain, unflavored dental floss through the narrow seam around the base of a faucet. Move it back and forth to loosen grime that a sponge or cloth cannot reach. REMOVE WALL SCUFFS Rub a clean tennis ball gently over light scuff marks on painted walls. * CHANGE YOUR MOWING DIRECTION Alternate the direction in which you mow each week. This helps keep grass blades from permanently lean- ing one way and reduces repeated compaction along the same tracks. PULL TINY WEEDS WITH A FORK Slide the tines beneath the crown of a small weed and gently lever the root from the soil. This works well in crowded flower beds where a larger tool might disturb nearby plants. Sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference. From catching a hidden leak before it becomes an expensive repair to making cleaning house a little faster, these clever tricks can save time, prevent messes and make life around the house a little easier. BOIL PAVEMENT CRACKS Carefully pour boiling water direct- ly onto weeds growing in sidewalk cracks. Keep it away from grass, de- sirable plants and your skin. MAKE A WATERING EXTENSION Temporarily attach a clean pool noo- dle to the end of a hose to direct wa- ter toward a planter that is difficult to reach. FIZZ AWAY TOILET RINGS Drop a denture-cleaning tablet into the toilet bowl once a month. Let it sit overnight, then flush. DRYER SHEET + SHOWER DOORS Wet a dryer sheet and use it to scrub soap scum from shower doors. DEFOG A WINDSHIELD Keep a clean blackboard eraser in the glove compartment. Use it to wipe fog from the inside of the wind- shield without leaving streaks. KITCHEN TONGS FOR PRUNING When pruning roses, holly or other thorny plants, use kitchen tongs to hold branches safely out of the way while you cut. UNSTICK A RUSTY SCREW Pour a capful of club soda over rusty hardware that will not budge. Allow it to soak into the rust and sediment before trying to turn the screw again. CLEAN UNDER APPLIANCES Slip an old sock over the bottom of a hanger, secure it in place and slide it beneath the refrigerator, washer, dryer or other hard-to-reach spaces to collect dust, hair and crumbs. LIFT GREASE STAINS WITH CHALK Rub plain white chalk over a fresh grease stain and let it absorb the oil for several minutes. Brush away the chalk, then wash the item as usual. CLEAN NARROW VASES WITH RICE Add a spoonful of uncooked rice, warm water & drop of dish soap to a narrow vase or bottle. Swirl the mix- ture around and rinse thoroughly. DUST BLINDS WITH KITCHEN TONGS Wrap a microfiber cloth around each side of a pair of kitchen tongs and secure the cloths with rubber bands. Clamp the tongs around each blind slat to clean both sides at once. GLITTER HELP! Press reusable mounting putty, silly putty, or a ball of play dough over spilled glitter. The sticky surface picks up tiny pieces that a broom often leaves behind. *A QUICK WORD OF CAUTION* Always test cleaning methods in an inconspicuous area first. Do you ever feel like all you do is work, eat, sleep, and re- peat? You’re not wrong. We spend roughly 65% of our adult working life asleep, get- ting ready for work, commuting, and working. That leaves 35% for everything we’d call life. You’ve heard the phrase leave home at home and leave work at work. Here’s the problem: that’s not how our brains operate. Home goes with you to work. Work comes home with you. Your brain doesn’t have a filing system, and work- life balance is often nothing more than a catchy phrase on a recruiting brochure. Have you ever had one of those days where just getting out of bed and driving to work required every ounce of energy you had? Would it shock you to know that not everyone feels that way? What if you could get rid of that feeling for good, without changing your job, your title, or your salary? It’s not too good to be true. For every person who feels that energy drain the moment their day starts, there’s someone who works just as hard and still comes home with the men- tal and physical energy to be present for their family. The difference isn’t the job. It’s the company culture, and often the leadership behind it. Before 2020, offices were evolving fast, open layouts, big- ger breakrooms, ping-pong tables, nap pods… lipstick on a pig. Then came the remote and hybrid boom, marketed as a perk and a benefit. Ping-pong table sales dropped, office occupancy dropped, and company profits went up… sweatpants on an employee. Neither change had a lasting effect on morale nor lowered the frequency of “those days.” To be fair, most of these changes came from leaders who genuinely wanted employees to feel valued and enjoy their work. But when that’s the only change made, mo- rale gets a brief lift, then settles lower than where it started. Why? Because it’s not what people actually need. People need to feel like their work matters, their ideas matter, their concerns matter, and that they’re supported when they speak up. They want to be seen as capable and important, not just present. They want to be happy. When work sucks, the rest of life sucks with it, and it all cycles home and back again. Com- panies have a responsibility to break that cycle. The good news: the problems aren’t permanent, and the fix is often simpler than expected. Culture creates all of it, and it starts at the top, with honesty, real communication, emotional intelligence, and leadership that walks the walk. Sometimes it just takes an objective set of eyes to spot what’s missing, and more importantly, how to fix it. Thirty-four years ago, my family chose Willow Park as our home. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions we ever made. We have raised our three sons here. Today they are 44, 42 and 33 years old, but to me they’ll always be the little boys who grew up exploring the simple blessings that make Willow Park such a special place. Our home has always been full of ani- mals. Over the years we’ve had goats, donkeys, llamas, peacocks, ducks, geese, and more. My youngest son could even stand on his horse! These moments still make me smile. Growing up around animals taught my boys kindness, responsibility, and compassion. Today, each of them have rescue animals of their own, and I couldn’t be prouder that they care for animals just as they did growing up. But what has made Willow Park truly special has always been its people. This community embraced my fam- ily. We built friendships here, cele- brated milestones here, and watched my children grow into adults here. Willow Park gave my family a won- derful place to call home, and for that I will always be grateful, After living here 34 years, I’ve had the privilege of watching our city grow while still holding on to the small- town values that make it unique. It is an incredible honor to serve the city that has blessed us for more than three decades I’m proud to call Willow Park home. This summer, we also got to enjoy the World Cup hosted in the U.S. for the first time since 1994. There were lots of visitors finding out how amazing the country is and how friendly the American people are! It was great following Team USA and the other great teams including the dominat- ing winning team from Spain. Infrastructure improvement projects continue in Parker County with lots of progress being made on TxDOT’s I-30/I-20 roadwork and the county’s reconstruction of North Oakridge Drive in Hudson Oaks! Each owner has painted it a different color, changed the hardware, or added a touch that made it their own. Every time I walk past, I’m reminded that a home is never really finished, it’s just being rewritten by the people who live there. Nothing could be more apropos for residents living in Parker County. Parker County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country and families continue to move to Parker County. New homes are constructed to meet a growing demand because of the perceived value of home prop- erty, value of home construction, excellent school system, and quiet suburban and rural living. Although ongoing construction has strained our infrastructure and com- muting convenience, completion of the I-20 and I-30 highway expansion and Bankhead access road project will hopefully bring much needed improvements to our roads. Value is the principal concept guiding local growth. The local governments attempt to deliver safe and orderly lifestyle with little over-regulation, reduced taxes, and carefully monitored tax expen- ditures. With careful management of re- sources and limited, but effective regulation of building projects, our goal should be to allow orderly growth without compromising the value of country living, fresh air, and open space. You learn a lot about home in Texas. It’s more than a place - it’s the back porch where friends gather, the smell of mesquite on the grill, and evenings around the fire pit sharing stories. This season reminds us of summer memories while looking ahead to the first day of school, Friday night lights, and new traditions. When I think about what makes those moments special, it always comes back to the people. I’ve been blessed with friendships from every season of life, and here in Aledo, neighbors become family. We cele- brate together, support one another through challenges, and build com- munity one relationship at a time. For me, home is Aledo - not because it’s perfect, but because its people are generous, resilient, welcoming, and proud to serve one another. Here’s my toast: To Aledo.
