Jonah GetsJonah Gets Lost & FoundLost & Found Written By Jill Metcalfe, Ed.D. & Illustrated by Angel Albarran
One day, Jonah and his mother were shopping at the mall. Jonah did not want to be there, not at all.
Shopping was not fun for him. He would rather be at home playing with his friends.
But Jonah knew he could not stay at home, so he had come to the mall with his mom. His mom was busy shopping and looking at some skirts; Jonah got distracted looking at some shirts.
And even though it was not his intention, Jonah was not paying attention. He recognized a pair of shoes walking by, and thinking it was his mom, followed right behind.
A few minutes passed as Jonah wandered along. He did not know what, but something felt wrong. He tilted his head up to look at his mom’s face, but to his surprise, there was a stranger in her place.
Jonah started breathing hard and fast; try as he might, he could not remember where he saw his mother last. He was panicked and scared, and totally unprepared.
He felt a tap on his shoulder and heard someone say, “Hi.” It scared Jonah so much he jumped ten feet into the sky. He had never been so happy to see a bee with pink bows. It was Miss Sandy the Safety Bee – someone he knows!
“Jonah, what’s wrong? You look kind of sad.” “I lost my mom. She is going to be so mad.” Jonah started to cry and gave Miss Sandy a hug. He just knew she could help him – she was a smart bug.
“Jonah, everything is going to be okay. I know just what to do to help you today.”
“Does your mother have a phone?” Miss Sandy asked in a reassuring tone. It seemed like a simple question, but Jonah had a confession. “I don’t know her phone number, but it ends in a two.” “Well when this is over, you have homework to do.”
Since we cannot call her, we will have to do this the old-fashioned way. Miss Sandy took Jonah’s hand in hers – there would be no more wandering astray.
“Jonah, what is your mother’s name? What do people call her?” “I call her Mom, sometimes Momma Bear.” “But, Jonah, what is her real name?” Jonah shrugged. “What I call her and her name, they aren’t the same?” Before Miss Sandy said it, he already knew, “Well when this is over, you have homework to do.”
Hand in hand, they looked for someone who worked at the store. Miss Sandy asked Jonah questions, more than she had before. “How tall is your mother?” Jonah shrugged. “What color hair does your mother have?” Jonah shrugged. “What is your mother wearing?” Jonah shrugged. “What can you tell me about her?” Jonah shrugged.
While Miss Sandy asked a store employee for assistance, Jonah decided, in the future, he would not wander away at any distance.
A few nice people who worked at the store, stopped what they were doing and walked the floor.
“Is a mom looking for her son? Has anyone seen her? Has anyone?”
Jonah heard an announcement, the kind the principal at school makes, come on, “If you are Jonah’s mom, we have found your son. He is with us at the desk in Customer Service.” After hearing his name on the intercom, Jonah was nervous.
Miss Sandy waited with Jonah, still holding his hand. Jonah had so many questions circling in his head. Would his mom be mad? Would his mom be sad?
Miss Sandy squeezed Jonah’s hand just a bit, It was enough to make all of the questions quit.
Miss Sandy sat with Jonah telling him everything would be alright. She reminded him of all the other times she had taught him right.
Jonah knew Miss Sandy was one of the best; he knew she would help him and to let his fears go to rest. It was just a minute or so later, he heard his mother exclaim, “Jonah, my son!” She ran to hug Jonah, then gave a big bear hug to everyone.
Miss Sandy introduced herself to Jonah’s “Momma Bear”, and told her everything she needed to hear.
“I am Sandy the Safety Bee, I do more than what people see, I drive the bus and wear these bows, but I care about my students from their heads down to their toes.
Momma Bear, I know you love and care about your son, but today you will have to do more than have fun. Jonah has homework to do, and to do it, he will need some help from you.”
The End Thanks for reading!
