In todays consumer driven society, bright glowing advertisements and instant online shopping has hooked people to prioritize getting the latest trendy thing. It makes it harder to tell the difference between necessities for survival and desires. Imagine you are in school Your allowance is limited. You want new shoes, but need the money for food and school. It's fine to want them, sure. but our survival comes first. Therefore we need to secure what we all truly need, and our desires can wait.
Many people believe that buying trendy products makes them happy, but spending money without considering our priorities can lead to poor financial decisions. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB, 2022), understanding the difference between needs and wants helps people make better spending decisions. For example, students should use their allowance for food, transportation, and school requirements before spending it on unnecessary items.
Furthermore, consumers should not let advertisements and online trends influence every purchase. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD, 2019) discusses the risks of online advertising and the importance of protecting consumers from misleading marketing practices. Before buying something, we should consider whether it is necessary, compare prices, and check product quality instead of purchasing items just because they are popular.
Lastly, prioritizing needs encourages responsible consumption and helps protect the environment. The United Nations (UN, n.d.), through Sustainable Development Goal 12, promotes responsible consumption and production, including reducing waste and using resources wisely. By buying only what we need, we can avoid unnecessary waste and practice responsibility, self-control, and gratitude.
In conclusion prioritizing needs over wants is essential for making better financial decisions and lead to better consumption. Though advertisements promote products that make us desire purchases, we should focus on our basic needs. If we adopt the practice of budgeting and develop the habit of thinking before buying and cutting down on unplanned purchases, we can save a considerable amount of money and be prepared for future needs. Of course, wants will always be there, but needs have to be prioritized.
