The architects were the Dutch van Den Hentz, the Chinese Loto Ang, and undagi (Balinese architects). The construction was completed in 1921. It was destroyed almost entirely by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 and earthquake in 1975. Its name means "Garden at the End" or "Garden at the Edge". Built on 12 hectares (30 acres). the palace has three large pools. In the center pool there is the main building named Gili Bale ("island pavilion"), connected to the edge of the pool by a bridge; untypically of balinese bale, this building has walls and a distinct Dutch colonial white façade. Lempuyang temple Pura Penataran Agung Lempuyang is a Balinese Hindu temple (or Pura) located in the slope of Mount Lempuyang. It is also known as “the gates of heaven”. Lempuyang is considered as part of a complex of Pura surrounding Mount Lempuyang, one of the highly regarded temples of Bali. The temples of Mount Lempuyang, represented by the highest Pura at the peak of Mount Lempuyang, Pura Lempuyang Luhur, is one of the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, or the "six sanctuaries of the world", the six holiest places of worship on Bali. Lempuyang is especially beautiful at sunrise, when you can see Agung through the temple gates. The very “instagrammable” picture can be taken there, so do expect long long queues, even when arriving at opening at 6AM. The people of Tenganan Pegringsingan are called Bali Aga, the original Balinese. They descend from the pre-Majapahit kingdom of Bedahulu. There are strict rules as to who is allowed to live in the village. Only those born in the village can stay in the village and become full members of the community. There are rules regarding marriage and anyone who marries outside of the village has to leave. Tourists are attracted to Tenganan by its unique Bali Aga culture that still holds to the original traditions, ceremonies, and rules of ancient Balinese, and its unique village layout and architecture. Besakih temple Besakih Temple is a temple complex in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali. It is the most important, largest, and holiest temple of Balinese Hinduism, and one of a series of Balinese Temples. The complex is over a thousand years old, with stone bases resembling megalithic stepped pyramids that suggest ancient origins. Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate but related temples with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope. The entrance is marked by a candi bentar (split gateway), and beyond it, the Kori Agung is the gateway to the second courtyard. The temple compound consists of a petirtaan or bathing structure, famous for its holy spring water, where Balinese Hindus go to for a ritual purification called Melukat. The temple pond has a spring which gives out fresh water regularly, which Balinese Hindus consider to be holy or amritha. Tirta Empul Temple was founded around a large water spring in 962 A.D. during the Warmadewa dynasty (10th-14th centuries). The name of the temple comes from the ground water source named "Tirta Empul". The spring is the source of the Pakerisan River. The temple is divided into three sections: Jaba Pura (front yard), Jaba Tengah (central yard) and Jeroan (inner yard). Goa Lawah, or the ‘Bat Cave’ features a complex built around a cave opening that is inhabited by hordes of bats. The temple was established in the 11th century by Mpu Kuturan, one of the early priests who laid the foundations of Hinduism on the island. Pura Goa Lawah is sometimes included among the Sad Kahyangan Jagad, or the "six sanctuaries of the world", the six holiest places of worship on Bali. According to Balinese beliefs, they are the pivotal points of the island and are meant to provide spiritual balance to Bali. The number of these most sacred sanctuaries always adds up six, but depending on the region, the specific temples that are listed may vary. It is the only Balinese sea temple (pura segara) that is also one of the nine directional temples. It is dedicated to Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in his manifestation as Rudra. The temple is built at the edge (ulu) of a 70-meter- high (230 ft) cliff or rock (watu) projecting into the sea. In folklore, this rock is said to be part of Dewi Danu's petrified barque. A Kecak dance performance based on the Ramayana is performed daily in Uluwatu temple every 6pm on the cliff-side. This outdoor performance has a sunset background. The temple is inhabited by long-tailed macaques, who are notorious for snatching visitors' belongings such as flip-flops, cameras and sunglasses. As of 2026, about 1,260 Balinese long-tailed macaque monkeys lived in the Ubud Monkey Forest. It includes numerous species of plants and trees as well as three Hindu temples constructed around 1350, and numerous visitor facilities. Monkey Forest Ubud holds a significant history intertwined with Balinese culture. Bunyamal waterfall Banyumala Waterfall is unique because it is a multi-tiered waterfall, with water cascading down several levels, creating stunning natural pools. The surrounding area is lush, with dense jungle and a cool, refreshing climate that makes it feel like a hidden paradise. Sekumpul, meaning 'a group of', is a collection of seven waterfalls located in north Bali. Fed by upland streams, they are considered the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. The seven waterfalls are separate and scattered, varying in height and shape. Tukad Cepung has a height of 15 meters, and is not directly exposed to the outside like other waterfalls. Rather it is in a stone cave and hidden. In the morning the sunbeams shine into the cave and that makes this waterfall even more special.
