Separated from the home to maintain a professional atmosphere, the studio is divided into two distinct areas: a bright, minimal workspace inspired by a blank canvas, and a warm, relaxing zone that offers comfort and retreat during long creative sessions. Brick was chosen for the façade to reflect the surrounding vernacular architecture and integrate with the local context. Due to the infill site’s existing trees, a sustainable approach was adopted, resulting in a partly biophilic green roof combined with cladding that responds to the local character. Page 10SHAKILA KARIM ROCHA East Sunrise West SunsetMidday Morning sunlight creates soft shadows across both courtyards, while east-facing windows can increase natural light without harsh glare. At midday, the southern courtyard receives more direct sun, so shading devices or reduced south-facing glazing help prevent overheating. In the evening, western trees and the taller building filter light, creating soft, diffuse conditions ideal for a gallery. North-facing gallery spaces and windows provide consistent natural light without direct sunlight on artworks. Page 12SHAKILA KARIM ROCHA Key: Structure Compression Tension Foundation Live load Dead Load The building uses a glulam structure to support its large scale and unique form. The diagram shows how forces act on the structure to maintain stability under different loads. Its “open box” framing allows the walls to resist lateral forces and provide structural integrity. The materials were chosen to continue the materiality of the existing residential vernacular while creating a distinct commercial identity. The reception area uses brick walls and cladding similar to nearby houses, helping the building blend into the calm character of the town. In contrast, the east side introduces timber cladding and green roofing, creating a more sustainable and unique identity that responds to the surrounding countryside while remaining separate from the residential context. The next three projects showcase some of the work I have produced during my time here. The tasks have allowed me to learn new software such as Sketchup, ArchiCAD and layout. I was given the task to design a preliminary master plan for a new housing development, in an approach that the project meets client needs and is sustainable. The process includes: • Considering the site’s context and the community’s needs. • Conducting an assessment of the site’s opportunities and constraints, including critical infrastructure requirements. • Developing a detailed plan that outlines the structural elements of the proposed development and includes conditions to ensure design principles are followed. • Ensuring buildings are legally compliant with London Plan policies.
