Legionella Compliance Guide for IrelandA Practical Guide for Duty Holders in Ireland 2026 Edition Prepared by EnviroWater Ireland Protect your people. Meet your legal responsibilities. Reduce your risk.
What is Legionella?Legionella is a genus of bacteria found naturally in freshwater environments. It becomes a health risk when it multiplies in artificial water systems such as cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, and spa pools. Inhaling contaminated water droplets (aerosols) can cause Legionnaires' disease, a severe and potentially fatal form of pneumonia, or the milder Pontiac fever. Building owners and duty holders have a legal responsibility to assess and control the risk of Legionella in their water systems. Conditions That Increase Risk • Water temperature between 20°C and 45°C • Stagnant or low-flow water conditions • Biofilm, scale, rust, or sediment present • Inadequate disinfection levels • Dead legs and infrequently used outlets • Poorly maintained storage tanks • Nutrient sources for bacterial growth🌡Temperature💧Water Tanks🚿Showers⚙PipeworkScale🦠Biofilm Prevention is far more effective than responding to an outbreak.
