CultureCHATEAUX In this historical haven you will see a chateau around almost every corner each offering very different experiences. These are our most local... CASTELNAUD: Houses a museum of warfare in the middle ages, displaying ancient tools and weaponry, included giant catapults mounted on top of the castle. CHATEAU MILANDES: The former home of Josephine Baker, with renaissance architecture, displaying her costumes and lifetime achievements, and offering children's workshops and falconry displays. CHATEAU BEYNAC: The most authentic and best-preserved fortress of the Perigord. Perched dramatically on a cliff above the village. CAVES (GROTTES) The region has an extraordinary number of prehistoric cliff dwellings and caves displaying some of the oldest artworks known to man, LASCAUX being one of the most famous, with the largest animal cave painting in the world. LA GOUFFRE DE PADIRAC: Embark upon an underground boat trip through deep caverns with atmospheric lighting and music. LA GROTTE DE DOMME: Domme itself is perched upon a network of caves open to the public, with an impressive display of stalactite rock formations and a glass lift bringing you back up to the surface, looking out over the Dordogne valley. CUISINE The local cuisine is often centred around duck, with many restaurants specialising in Magret de Canard (duck breast), Confit de Canard (crispy duck leg) and Foie Gras (duck liver pate). Other regional specialities include Salad de Gésiers (duck gizzards salad), escargots (snails), cèpes and truffes (mushrooms). Black Périgord truffles (truffes) tend to grow near green oak, which are plentiful in the area. These highly-prized mushrooms are very expensive and used sparingly to add flavour to dishes. The Dordogne is also known for its abundance of walnut trees, and you'll find walnut cake (gateau noix) on most menus. If cheese and wine are more to your taste, the nearby town of Rocamadour is famous for its goats’ cheese (chèvre), and Domme has its very own vineyard with free wine tasting at ‘La Cave du Vin de Domme’ at Florimont-Gaumier. GARDENS The Dordogne valley is abundant in lush green vegetation, allowing the creation of astonishing gardens and reserves. Our absolute favourite being… LES JARDINS DU MARQUEYSSAC: An enchanting swirl of box hedge topiary, art work, and peacocks, set high above the Dordogne river with amazing views. Children's entertainment, crafts, climbing lessons, and a via-ferrata (cliff traverse) are all included in the entrance fee, and there is an on-site cafe and children's play area. In summer, arrive on Thursdays at sunset to experience a magical evening of candle-lit footpaths serenaded by live music throughout the gardens.

Domme CAVES Lurking beneath the village is a natural cave that served as a shelter for the population during the wars of religion, now displaying one of the finest limestone stalactite formations in the region, with a glass lift back up to the surface looking out over the valley, as well as an enclosed staircase for those who don’t enjoy heights. AERODROME Thrill seekers will enjoy Domme’s own aerodrome, offering voyages through the sky, with unforgettable views. MARKET DAY – THURSDAY The medieval village of Domme is a tourist attraction in itself, being officially recognised as one of 'The Most Beautiful Villages of France’. Just 3 minutes by car, 7 minutes on bike, or 18-20 minutes on foot. Here you will find all of the essentials at your fingertips: Bars, cafes and restaurants, tourist boutiques, a small Vival market, an ATM, and a post office. Parking within the walls is scarce, but there are numerous carparks outside. BASTILLE VILLAGE Sitting at an altitude of 215m, Domme offers a magnificent panoramic viewing platform of the Dordogne valley and the river Dordogne. This small village has a unique architectural heritage, with public footpaths along its medieval ramparts and gardens. You can also take a tour of the village on a tourist train. The walled village has two large fortified entrance gates, 'La Porte del Bos', and 'La Porte des Tours' (see photo). The towers at either side were used to imprison the Knights Templars, and are now accessible to the public by guided tours, where you can see their ancient engravings. 3 min drive (18 min walk)

LA FORT DE LA ROQUE-GAGEAC Set in the cliff side above the village, the Fort of La Roque-Gageac offers a glimpse into history from one of the most beautiful panoramas of the Perigord Noir. Take the breath-taking cliffside staircase up to the Fort and discover the remains of its defensive system, including a pit, murder-holes, battlements, arrow-slits, loopholes and gun ports. MONTGOLFIERES (HOT AIR BALLOONS) Launching from La Roque Gageac, embark on an unforgettable journey through the sky. It’s also a joy to watch from the ground, sometimes the balloons bob down into the river before floating back up again (see photo). MARKET DAY – FRIDAY This stunning village sits beside the river Dordogne, with its houses built into the cliff face. La Roque-Gageac benefits from a tropical micro-climate, thanks to its southern exposure, allowing the streets to be lined with palm trees, banana trees, agaves, figs, cacti, and bamboos. Many small streets lead to the foot of the cliff, from which one can enjoy a magnificent view of the river and the nearby castles across the valley. GABARRES To discover the village from the river, you can embark aboard one of the famous "Gabarres", the traditional flat-bottomed boats which were once used to transport goods along the river. These boats offer guided sightseeing cruises along the river launching from both La Roque Gageac and Beynac. View the amazing architecture built into the cliffs whilst passing by the canoes and kayaks. (Audio commentary available in English) LA BAMBOUSAIE Take a free visit to this 5-hectare estate displaying a grand variety of bamboo plans reaching up to 20m high. Its steep cobbled streets display its exceptional heritage, with traditional stone houses, dovecotes, and magnificent views. The village is most famously known for its two castles: Castelnaud, the magnificently restored castle housing the Museum of War in the Middle Ages (below), displaying ancient tools and weaponry, included giant trebuchets mounted on top of the castle. And the beautiful Chateau Milandes (right), the former home of Josephine Baker, with renaissance architecture, displaying her costumes and lifetime achievements, and offering children's workshops and falconry displays. BEACH & PICNIC AREA The riverside beach under the bridge makes it a favourite spot for outdoor recreation, with picnic benches and a snack-bar. CYCLE TRACK Castelnaud sits at the start of the Ceou Valley cycle route, perfect for families, with stunning scenery. Castelnaud-la-Chapelle 19 min drive

MONTGOLFIERES (HOT AIR BALLOONS) Launching from Beynac, embark on an unforgettable journey through the sky. It’s also a joy to watch from the ground, sometimes the balloons bob down into the river before floating back up again. MARKET DAY – MONDAY Beynac is easily recognised by its imposing Castle, once the scene of several fierce wars between the Lords of the fortress (allied to the King of France) and the Lords of Castelnaud Castle (allied to the King of England). ‘Le Chateau de Beynac’ is one of the best preserved and most renowned in the region. Of medieval construction (XII century), it overlooks the river of the Dordogne and dominates the village. Steep cobbled streets with traditional stone architecture, magnificent views, tourist boutiques, and riverside cafés and restaurants make this village a ‘must see’. GABARRES To discover the village from the river, you can embark aboard one of the famous "Gabarres", the traditional flat-bottomed boats which were once used to transport goods along the river. These boats offer guided sightseeing cruises along the river launching from both La Roque Gageac and Beynac.
