OUR STORY Meet Maya & Josh Logistics + Graphic Design → Coffee obsessives Maya and Josh met while working the same office job downtown — both counting down the hours until their coffee break was the highlight of their day. 'We joked for years that we should just open a coffee shop,' Maya laughs. 'Eventually we stopped joking.' Neither of them had a background in food service. Josh was in logistics, Maya in graphic design. What they did have was a shared obsession with good coffee and a belief that their neighborhood needed a place that felt like home. THE BEGINNING The Story Every bag roasted less than 20 miles away — fresh, seasonal, local The idea became real on a rainy Tuesday in 2018, when the old bakery space on 4th Street went up for lease. Josh walked past it on his way to work every day for two weeks before he finally called Maya and said, 'I think this is it.' The first year was hard. They maxed out savings on equipment, taught themselves to pull espresso from YouTube videos, and worked every shift themselves for the first eight months because they couldn't yet afford to hire help. What kept them going was the regulars — the same faces showing up every morning, learning their names, telling them the shop had become part of their routine. 2018 Idea born 8 months No days off Regulars Kept us going WILDROOT COFFEE CO. • 3
WHAT MAKES US, US Locally Roasted, Family-Made Every bag of beans is roasted less than 20 miles away, and the roast profile changes seasonally based on what's freshest. Maya designs every seasonal menu by hand — a nod to her design background — down to the chalkboard lettering. Nothing on the menu is mass-produced. Pastries are baked fresh each morning by a local baker two doors down, and the oat milk is made in-house because Josh could never find one he liked enough to serve. COMMUNITY CONNECTION Showing Up for Neighbors A regular morning — where coffee is just the start of the conversation When the shop flooded during a storm in 2022, the community showed up before Maya and Josh even finished posting about it — regulars came with mops, a nearby restaurant lent them equipment, and they reopened in four days instead of the four weeks they'd feared. "This isn't just where I get coffee. LOOKING AHEAD The Next Chapter New patio out back — sketched on napkins since year one, opening this spring Wildroot just celebrated five years, and this spring they're opening a small patio out back — something Maya has been sketching on napkins since year one.
