GENERAL SAMUEL CHAPMAN ARMSTRONG THE FOUNDING ETHOS OF World-Ready Leadership When General Samuel Chapman Armstrong founded Hampton Institute in 1868, he established a revolutionary educational philosophy connecting practical knowledge, discipline, character, and service to others—the education of the Head, Hand, and Heart. Arriving in 1872 with limited resources but extraordinary determination, Booker T. Washington embraced Armstrong’s vision. Mentoring Washington directly, Armstrong recommended his star graduate to found and lead Tuskegee Institute in 1881. Washington took Armstrong’s core principles and expanded them into a national blueprint for Black self-reliance, educational access, and philanthropic partnership. Today, this unbroken lineage of leadership rests in the hands of another visionary General. President Darrell K. Williams now carries this historic mantle forward—advancing Armstrong’s founding ethos and Washington’s expansive legacy into the 21st century to prepare modern world-ready leaders. Armstrong created the proof of concept. Washington proved its global power. Hampton invested in a vision. That vision built institutions and continues to change the world.
