Professor H M B P Ranaweera was promoted to the rank of Professor in the Department of Information Systems with effect from November 2025. Subsequently, he was appointed as the Dean of the Faculty of Management Studies, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Mihintale, with effect from April 2026 The university community warmly congratulates Professor H.M.B.P. Ranaweera on these well-deserved achievements and wishes him continued success in leading the Faculty of Management Studies towards greater excellence and innovation. Mr R M G H N Rathnayake has been appointed as the Head of the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Management Studies, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, Mihintale, with effect from May 2026. Mr Rathnayake holds a B.Sc. Eng. in Computer Engineering, M.Sc. Eng. in Electrical Engineering, and MBA, all from the University of Peradeniya. His strong academic background, extensive experience in higher education and academic administration position will help him well to lead the department in achieving its academic and strategic objectives. In his new role, he will oversee the department's academic, research, and operational activities while fostering a supportive environment for staff and students. His leadership is expected to contribute significantly to the achievement of the department's strategic goals and the enhancement of educational quality. DEPARTMENT WELCOME The Department of Information Systems warmly welcomed its 2024/2025 intake through a vibrant programme organized by the Business Information Technology Students' Association (BITSA) on 8th of March 2026. The event marked the beginning of a new academic journey for the incoming students and provided them with an opportunity to become familiar with the department and university life. During the programme, lecturers introduced the department, its academic structure, and the various activities, projects, and events conducted throughout the year. 15 CELEBRATING NEW BEGINNINGS entertainment performances, including singing and dancing, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere for the new students The programme was successfully organized by the 2023/2024 BITSA committee under the leadership of Hiruni and Chanith, whose dedication and efforts contributed significantly to making the event a memorable experience for the incoming batch. The event reflected the welcoming spirit of the Department of Information Systems while encouraging students to actively engage in both academic and extracurricular activities throughout their university journey. CINEMATHRAThe 2023/2024 batch of the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Management Studies, successfully organized Cinemathra 2025 on 22 December 2025 at the Dr T B Andarawewa Theatre from 4.00 P.M. onwards. The event was conducted as a practical assignment under the Business Applications subject with the objective of developing students’ practical skills in multimedia production, digital content creation, project management, teamwork, and the effective use of business-related software applications. Cinemathra 2025 provided students with a unique opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in a creative and professional environment. Through the production of short films, students enhanced their abilities in planning, communication, problem-solving, leadership, and digital media management while demonstrating the importance of technology in modern business applications. Students were divided into several groups and were entrusted with the complete responsibility of producing their films, including script writing, content development, directing, acting, filming, editing, and presenting their final productions. The students received initial guidance from Lecturer Ms C S Ranasinghe. Subsequently, Instructor Mr G P Subasinghe continued the supervision and provided valuable support throughout the project, enabling the successful completion of the event. The short films screened during the programme were: Beyond the Darkness, Zero to Hero, The Abyss, Mission of Secret, Eternull AI Heart Beat. Each film addressed different social and contemporary themes while reflecting the creativity, innovation, and technical capabilities of the students. The event successfully highlighted how business and technology applications can be integrated with creative media production to deliver meaningful messages to society. Following a competitive evaluation process, The Abyss and AI Heart Beat were selected as the winning productions of Cinemathra 2025 for their exceptional storytelling, creativity, and technical excellence. The event concluded as a memorable achievement for the Department of Information Systems, showcasing the talents and collaborative spirit of its students while promoting the practical application of Business Applications in real-world projects. V 4.0RUIZ-GPUBG MADNESS UNLEASHED The Department of Information Systems proudly hosted RUIZ-G V4.0 inter university gaming competition was held on 30 August 2025. The Ruiz-G gaming competition went full chaos mode in the best way possible, featuring the battle royale hit PUBG: Battlegrounds. From the moment players jumped in, it was all about survival, smart plays, and that “last one standing” energy. From the beginning of the matches, the competition was intense. Players carefully selected their landing zones, quickly collected resources, and prepared for early engagements. Every decision mattered, as even a small mistake could lead to elimination. As the game progressed and the playable zone gradually shrank, the level of intensity increased. Players had to adapt to changing situations, rotate strategically, and engage in well-timed fights. The competition highlighted not only individual skill but also the importance of awareness and patience. 18BIT Chronicle Volume 8
Overall, the Ruiz-G gaming competition served as a successful platform for competitive gaming, reflecting the growing interest in esports among young players. The event not only provided entertainment but also encouraged skill development and healthy competition.The tournament concluded on a high note, leaving participants and organizers optimistic about future Ruiz-G V5.0 esports events. In the final stages, only a few players remained on the battlefield, each fighting for the top position. After a series of closely contested matches, three outstanding players emerged as winners of the Ruiz-G gaming competition and they received valuable certificates and cash prizes, demonstrating consistent performance and strong game sense throughout the event. Online registration on March 10 with the rollout of its official web platform. The pre- selection round was conducted virtually online on March 26, where the team submissions were carefully reviewed. From a competitive pool of applicants, the absolute 10 best teams were selected to compete in the highly anticipated grand finale, which took place physically at Rajarata University on May 16. The final round concluded with outstanding performances from all participating teams. After an intense battle of logic and speed, the teams from the University of Moratuwa completely dominated the stage. The future of technology grew brighter when the smartest young coders gathered for BITCODE V6.0. This is the premier inter-university coding competition organized by the Business Information Technology Students' Association (BITSA) of the Department of Information Systems, Faculty of Management Studies, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka. This year, the event brought an exciting new change by using a "Magical Theme" to inspire students to create amazing solutions. Main coordinators are Mr S G A D De Jayathunga and Ms R G V K Premarathna. BIT-CODE V6.0 was designed to provide students with an engaging platform to enhance their technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, coding skills and collaborative skills.To make this version even better, BITSA successfully launched the official BITCODE Version 6 website (www.bitcodev6.com). The website served as the main digital platform for the event. It helped teams from different universities register easily, check updates, and follow the competition rules. The launch of the website marked a great milestone in making the competition more modern and accessible to everyone. The session enhanced students' understanding of software quality assurance activities, testing techniques, quality standards, andINDUSTRY AWARENESS SESSIONS industry best practices. By sharing their professional knowledge and real-world experiences, the speakers highlighted the importance of quality assurance in delivering reliable software solutions. “Empowering Academic Excellence at Rajarata University” Software Development Awareness Session The Department of Information Systems, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted a Software Development Awareness Session for its undergraduates, featuring Mr Isuru Sandakelum and Mr Chathura Prasanga, Software Engineers from Virstack. The session provided valuable insights into modern software development practices, industry expectations, and career opportunities in the software engineering field. Through their practical experiences and professional expertise, the speakers inspired students to strengthen their technical skills and gain a better understanding of real-world software development environments. The spirit of creativity and cultural reverence came alive across the university community with the launch of the photography competition, "ෙතමගු ලක ෙ යා". Initiated on May 20th, 2026, this timely event invited students to capture the serene beauty, cultural vibrancy, and spiritual essence of the Vesak season. Spearheading this successful creative initiative were the main coordinators, The competition was divided into two distinct streams to accommodate different photographic mediums: Mobile Photography and DSLR Photography. While the highly anticipated DSLR category ultimately concluded without an official winner this time around, the category remains a testament to the high standards of technical excellence expected by the panel of judges. Had a champion emerged from the DSLR category, a cash prize of Rs. 2,500 along with an official merit certificate would have been awarded to the Judge's Choice Champion, with certificates reserved for the subsequent runners-up. The Mobile Photography category witnessed an overwhelming wave of participation, showcasing that immense creative talent requires nothing more than a smartphone lens. Contestants pushed the boundaries of composition, lighting, and storytelling, giving the judges the incredibly difficult task of selecting the absolute best from a highly competitive pool of entries. Following a rigorous evaluation by the judging panel, the winners of the Mobile Photography Competition were announced as follows: Champion (Judges' Choice): H L A N Hewagama – Awarded a Rs. 2,500 cash prize. 1st Runner-Up: S M S S Samaratunga. 2nd Runner-Up (Joint): P.G.C.A. Nexus Navigators presented Autonomous Vehicles and Smart Transportation, Immerse X explored Extended Reality (AR/VR/MR) and the Metaverse, PulseAI discussed Generative AI in Education and Business, and NextGen Cities focused on Smart Cities and IoT Applications. The Department of Information Systems successfully organized DOT 2026 on 13 June 2026, bringing together students to explore and present innovative ideas on emerging technologies. The event provided a platform for students to enhance their knowledge, presentation skills, and understanding of current technological trends.Ten student groups participated in the event, each delivering presentations on a unique technology- related topics. EXPLORING THE DIGITAL FUTURENeoSpak AI presented AI in Healthcare Systems, Nexus of Biometric examined Biometric Security Systems, and Quantum Nexus highlighted Quantum Computing and the Future of Computing. In addition, BehaviorX explored the Internet of Behaviors (IoB), Team Nexa discussed Deepfake Technology and Digital Manipulation, and Agri Tech Nexus showcased Smart Agriculture Using IoT. Through their presentations, students demonstrated creativity, research skills, and a strong understanding of emerging technologies. The event encouraged participants to explore . innovative concepts and share valuable insights with their peers. The successful organization of DOT 2026 was made possible through the dedication and commitment of the organizing team. Special appreciation is extended to the Main Coordinators, W P D M Bandara and M H F Dhikra, for their leadership and contribution to the success of the event. DOT 2026 served as a valuable learning experience for all participants and reflected the enthusiasm of students to engage with the latest technological advancements.
