This document is a project factsheet for the EU-EAC MARKUP II initiative, a regional development programme promoting economic growth in the East African Community through private sector development and export promotion. It is intended for stakeholders in Uganda's coffee, avocado, cocoa and packaging value chains, including SMEs, farmer cooperatives, and development partners.
The factsheet opens with an overview of MARKUP II, covering its duration from 2023 to 2027, geographic scope across Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, and implementing partners including the International Trade Centre (ITC), the East African Community (EAC), and EAC Partner States Ministries. The targeted value chains are listed as avocado, cocoa, coffee, essential oils, French beans, gum arabic, leather, packaging, spices and tea.
The next section focuses on MARKUP II's work in Uganda, where it operates across four value chains: avocado, cocoa, coffee and packaging. It describes how the programme works with the Ugandan Coffee Development Authority to support SMEs and farmer cooperatives in becoming export-ready. Intervention areas include access to finance training, export and compliance skills, branding and marketing training, and sustainability and traceability training.
The third part presents coffee-specific results achieved in Uganda to date. Supported coffee businesses reported USD 4.70 million in sales across European, African and other international markets. European market sales reached USD 1.13 million, while sales within the EAC amounted to USD 1.69 million, with USD 890,000 in the EAC and USD 802,000 in other African markets. The programme also reports 690 jobs sustained or created in Uganda as a result of MARKUP II support in coffee.
The factsheet notes that six coffee businesses were supported to strengthen women's participation through collaboration between MARKUP II and ITC's SheTrades programme. It directs readers to the project website for feature-length stories, including one about East Africom Consults, a MARKUP II supported SME in Uganda. Contact information and social media handles are provided at the end.
