ThisprojectisaMuseum ofLanguagethatcelebratesthe Setswanalanguage,culture,andidentity.Theaim wasto createamuseum thatpreservesthelanguagewhiletelling thestoriesandhistoryoftheTswanapeople. MydesignwasinspiredbytheBotswana–SouthAfrica borderandhowcolonialboundariesseparatedTswana communitiesthathadoncelivedandmovedfreely.communitiesthathadoncelivedandmovedfreely. Althoughtheborderdividedpeoplephysically,itcouldnot separatetheirsharedlanguageandculture.Iexpressed thisideathroughthebuilding'sform,wheretheroofand massingresembleacrack,symbolisingbothdivisionand theopportunityforreconnection. OneofmymainprecedentswastheHarvardArtMuseums. Iwasinspiredbyitsuseofnaturallight,clearcirculation,Iwasinspiredbyitsuseofnaturallight,clearcirculation, andthebalancebetweenhistoricandcontemporary architecture.Theseprinciplesinfluencedtheorganisationof mymuseum andthevisitorexperience. Themuseum isprimarilyconstructedfrom brickandglass. Brickrepresentsheritage,permanence,andculturalmemory, whileglasssymbolisesopenness,transparency,and connection.Together,thesematerialsreflecttherelationshipconnection.Together,thesematerialsreflecttherelationship betweenthepastandthepresent. Overall,mymuseum isaplaceoflearning,reflection,and culturalcelebration,showinghowtheSetswanalanguage continuestounitepeoplebeyondthebordersthatonce dividedthem. Inthemuseum’sopen-plandesign,acentralhallwayrunslikeaninvisibleborder—aspatialmarkerthatechoesthehistoricalseparationofclansalongtheBotswanaborder.Traditionally,thesebordersreflectedbothconflict andcooperation,remindingusofthedelicatebalanceofheritageandidentity.Inthemuseum,thehallwaychannelsthislayeredmeaning:itnodstothedivisionsofthepast,yetremainsopenandaccessible,fostering dialogueandmovement.Here,thehallwayisnotawallbutathreshold—adynamicspacewherethesharedstoriesofBotswana’scommunitiescanunfoldandfindcommonground. STRIPSECTION Theperimetersectionillustratestherelationshipbetweenthebuilding's structural,material,andenvironmentalsystems.Areinforcedconcrete frameprovidesstability,whilebrick,glass,andsteelelementscreatea balancebetweenpermanenceandtransparency.Thesectionalso demonstratestheintegrationofwaterproofing,subsoildrainage,and roofdrainagesystems,ensuringdurabilitywhilemaintainingaclear connectionbetweentheinteriorspacesandthesurroundinglandscape.connectionbetweentheinteriorspacesandthesurroundinglandscape. IMBEWU:TheSeedisaproposaltotransform theabandonedKwaggafontein IndustrialParkintoacreativelearninginstitutionthatempowersyoungpeople througheducation,skillsdevelopment,andculturalexpression.Inspiredbythe symbolism ofaseed,theprojectisfoundedonthebeliefthattalentsshouldbe noticed,planted,nurtured,andgrown.Itreimaginesasiteonceshapedby industrialdeclineasaplaceofopportunity,belonging,andhope,wherehidden potentialcanflourish.potentialcanflourish. Thedesignembracesadaptivereusebypreservingtheexistingsteelportal- framestructureswhileintroducingnew interventionsthatsupportlearning, making,andcommunityengagement.Flexibleworkshops,studios,exhibition spaces,andgatheringareasencouragecollaborationandallow studentsto exploredifferentcareerpathwayswhiledevelopingpracticalandcreativeskills. Thematerialpalettereinforcestheproject'sidentity.Exposedbrickcelebrates theindustrialheritageofthesite,groundingthenewinterventioninitshistory,theindustrialheritageofthesite,groundingthenewinterventioninitshistory, whileglasscreatestransparency,fillstheinteriorswithnaturallight,and establishesvisualconnectionsbetweenspaces,symbolisingopenness, creativity,andgrowth. Thelandscapearchitectureplaysanequallyimportantroleinthedesign.The sitehasbeencarefullyexcavatedtocreateaseriesofterracesandvarying evelsthataccommodateoutdoormarkets,exhibitions,performances,and informalgatheringspaces.Theseinterventionstransform theformerindustrialinformalgatheringspaces.Theseinterventionstransform theformerindustrial groundsintoanactivepubliclandscapethatencouragesinteractionbetween studentsandthewidercommunity. Thisprojectfocusedonthetechnicaldevelopmentofanexisting StudentResidenceinMilpark,translatingaconceptualdesign intoacomprehensivesetofconstruction-readyworkingdrawings. Thebriefexploredtheintegrationofreinforcedconcreteand structuralsteelsystems,requiringthedetaileddesignofa basementparkinglevel,ground-flooramenities,arooftoptheatre for60students,andathree-storeysteelfaçadescreen.Throughfor60students,andathree-storeysteelfaçadescreen.Through theproductionofplans,sections,elevations,andtechnicaldetails, theprojectstrengthenedmyunderstandingofstructuralsystems, materialjunctions,constructiondetailing,andarchitectural documentation. Thegroundfloorservesasthepublicinterfaceoftheresidence, accommodatingreception,administrativeoffices,alibrary, computerlabs,agym,gamesroom,andaccessibleamenities. Thebasementprovidessecureresidentparkingwithdirectvehicularaccess from theroadviaareinforcedconcreteramp.Verticalcirculationcores, includingliftsandstaircases,connectalllevels,ensuringefficientmovement whileintegratingstructuralandservicerequirements.
