Figurative Language Glossary Use this as a helpful tool when completing the Figurative Language sections throughout this novel study. Alliteration is a repetition of initial consonant sounds. For example, Princess Penelope had fun at the pumpkin patch. You can even find it in childhood rhymes such as, “She sells seashells down by the seashore”. An author uses alliteration to create a more poetic sound effect by grouping similar letter sounds together in the same sentence. An allusion is a short reference to a literary work, character, or well-known person, place, thing, or idea. Often, the allusion is not described in detail. Foreshadowing is a literary device that the author uses to hint of something that will happen in the future. A homophone is a word that sounds the same as another word, but has a different meaning and/or spelling. For example: hour and our. Hyperbole is a an exaggeration that isn’t meant to be taken literally or seriously. For example, I’m so hungry, I could eat a whole horse! Obviously no human could eat a whole horse! An idiom is a group of words that mean something different than the meanings of the individual words. For example, “It cost me an arm and a leg!”. This idiom means that something is very expensive. It does not literally mean that the person has to pay with an arm and a leg! A metaphor is a comparison between two or more things without using the words “like” or “as”. For example: The fresh snow is a shimmering blanket. A simile is a comparison between two or more things, using the words “like” or “as”. For example: She was as brave as a lion. In this example, the girl’s bravery is being compared to the bravery of a lion.
Imagery is the author’s use of descriptive words that help to paint a vivid picture in the reader’s mind. The author will often use language that engages the five senses in order to bring the description to life. Onomatopoeia is a word that imitates a sound or action. For example, “Boom! Bang! Hiss. Clang.” These words give you a sound effect to go with the action in the story. Writers use personification it give human qualities to nonhuman things. For example: The sun smiled down on the earth. The sun isn’t human, but is described as smiling, which is a human-like quality. Symbolism means to give an object a meaning that is different from the object’s original meaning. For example: a dove is a white bird and it often represents a symbol of peace.
