A new cultural institution organized around perception
Approach Premise Objective To cultivate a culture that treats perception as seriously as knowledge. The way we see shapes everything we know, yet it is often the thing we examine least. We absorb these ways of seeing from the people, cultures, and institutions around us. Because they become familiar, they often become invisible. Yet no way of seeing reveals everything. Every lens brings some things into focus while leaving others outside the frame. Learning to examine perception is therefore a lifelong practice. It invites us to question what we take for granted, notice our assumptions, and see ourselves, one another, and the world more fully. SPS exists to cultivate that practice. SPS organizes itself around enduring human questions rather than academic disciplines. Anthropology, philosophy, psychology, law, religion, neuroscience, literature, and the arts become different lenses for examining the same reality. Why Now We live in an age in which countless forces compete to shape how we see the world, often without our awareness. Learning to examine perception is becoming one of the defining educational challenges of our time.
The gathering of SPS/Salon hosted by friends of the society. Evenings organized around conversation, shared tables, music, books, films, objects, and ideas inspired by each season's inquiry. An independent interdisciplinary research center developing new ways of understanding how perception is formed, challenged, and transformed. THE INSTITUTION: EXPRESSIONS A community organized around inquiry, with curated syllabi, discussion circles, seminars, gatherings, contributions from members, access to research. Conversations A long-form interview series hosted by Simi and Haze. Eight conversations each season, with people whose life's work has changed the way they see the world. Guests are selected for the depth of their thinking, the originality of their work, and the questions they continue to pursue. Many of our guests are teachers and scholars, reflecting our commitment to celebrating those who have devoted their lives to learning, asking questions, and helping others see the world in new ways. Editorial Original essays, and visual series exploring the ideas at the heart of SPS. Office Hours Memberships Research Education Educational resources developed through SPS will also support learning opportunities for displaced and vulnerable children through the founders' existing educational initiatives. Knowledge should circulate beyond universities.
