TODAY'S TOPICToday we're going to learn the Tagalog that you won't always find in books. These are everyday expressions Filipinos use all the time. If you understand these, conversations will feel much more natural."1. Ay Naku! Meaning "Oh no!" "Oh my goodness!" "Oh dear!" Used when you're surprised, worried, or slightly annoyed. Examples: Ay naku! Naiwan ko ang cellphone ko! Oh no! I left my phone! Ay naku, ang init! Oh my goodness, it's so hot!
2. Tama! Meaning: That's right! Correct! Exactly! Example people talking. Person A: Masarap ang adobo. Person B: Tama! 3. Oo nga! Meaning That's true! You're right! Exactly! Example Person 1: Mainit ngayon. (It’s hot today!) Person 2: Oo nga!
4. Talaga? Meaning Really? Seriously? Example Person 1: Pupunta ako sa Cebu. Person 2: Talaga? 5. Grabe! One of the most common Filipino expressions. The meaning depends on context. It can mean: Wow! Unbelievable! That's crazy! Amazing! Terrible! Examples Grabe, ang ganda! (Wow, that's beautiful!)
6. Naku! A shorter version of Ay naku. Often used by older people. 7. Susmaryosep! A humorous expression of surprise. Explain that it's mostly used by older generations and is not something he needs to use. 8. Diba? One of the MOST important words. Meaning: Right? Isn't it? Don't you agree? Examples Masarap ang lechon, diba? (Lechon is delicious, right?)
9. Siyempre! Meaning Of course! Examples Person 1: Mahilig ka sa mangga? Person 2: Siyempre! 10. Bahala na Meaning We'll see. Let's hope for the best. Whatever happens, happens. This reflects a well-known Filipino attitude of staying optimistic when things are uncertain.
QUESTIONS FILIPINOS OFTEN ASK FOREIGNERSFilipinos are naturally curious and friendly. If people notice you're a foreigner who speaks a little Tagalog, don't be surprised if they ask you these questions.Where are you from? Taga-saan ka? or Saan ka galing? What's your name? Ano ang pangalan mo?
Why do you know Tagalog? Bakit marunong kang mag-Tagalog? Possible answer: Nag-aaral ako ng Tagalog. I'm learning Tagalog. Nag-aral ako ng Tagalog I studied/learned Tagalog How long will you stay in the Philippines? Hanggang kailan ka sa Pilipinas? Possible answer: Hanggang Marso/March ako rito. I'm here until March.
Why are you here? Bakit ka nasa Pilipinas? Answer: Nagbabakasyon ako. I'm on vacation. or Turista ako I am tourist Do you like the Philippines? Gusto mo ba ang Pilipinas? Answer: Oo, gusto ko! Is this your first time? Unang beses mo ba sa Pilipinas? Answer: Oo.
FILIPINOS LOVE ASKING QUESTIONSDon't be surprised if someone you've just met asks you personal questions like your age, whether you're married, or how long you'll stay in the Philippines. In Filipino culture, these questions are usually meant to be friendly and show interest, not to invade your privacy.Some common questions include: May asawa ka na? (Are you married?) May anak ka ba? (Do you have children?) Ilang taon ka na? (How old are you?) Taga-saan ka? (Where are you from?) If you don't want to answer, it's perfectly okay to smile and say: Secret! 😄 or Mamaya na lang! (Maybe later!)
