Ysgol Gyfun Dŵr y Felin Comprehensive School Summer Term Newsletter 2026
Message from the Headteacher — Neges Gan y Pennaeth Dear Parents, Carers, and School Community, Thank you for taking time to read our summer newsletter. I hope it gives an insight into the wide and varied events, achievements and activities that have gone on at Dŵr y Felin and most importantly shows everyone what fantastic children we have in our school. Please may I also take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support as we perpetually seek to improve. This term we have undertaken a review of our current Respect for Learning Policy and tightened some of our processes. This has come after many meetings of our staff working party and the school pupil Senedd. Governors and Parents will be invited to consult in the new academic year. As we look ahead to the next academic year, we remain focused on continuous improvement, innovation, and ensuring that every child feels safe, challenged, and supported. We have a mandate for further change and improvement after our recent visit from Estyn, and we are committed to accelerating our timeline towards the improvement journey we were already on and one that was ratified by the Estyn Team. We are excited about the opportunities to come and confident in the strength of our team to meet them together. To those families who are moving on, we send our warmest wishes for the future—you will always be part of our school’s story, and we’d love past pupils to stay in touch so we can continue to celebrate your success. Wishing you all a restful and joyful summer break. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September for another exciting year. With warm regards, C Richmond
Meet the Senior Prefect Team 2026-27 Our core values of respect, kindness, resilience, empathy, ambition, responsibility, motiva- tion, curiosity and independence are being instilled into every aspect of school life. These values are the foundation of our culture and the guiding principles behind how we learn, work, and grow together. We’ve seen these values come to life in classrooms, play- grounds, assemblies, and beyond, as pupils have supported one another, faced challeng- es with determination, and shown genuine care for their peers and community. These are most proudly exemplified in the new Senior Prefect team. Lead Prefects—Gethin and Mollie Senior Prefect Team—Holly, Poppy, Mia, Daniel, Olver and Tom.
Young Achievers Award—Neath Rotary Club We are proud to celebrate two exceptional pupils who have been recognised with Rotary Young Achiev- ers Awards for their inspiring contributions to school and community life. Evan Crutchley (Year 9) has been honoured for his outstanding enthusiasm, talent, and commitment. A key figure in the performing arts, Evan has taken leading roles in school productions includ- ing Matilda, The Wizard of Oz, and Shrek. His talent extends beyond school, earning him the Best Youth Actor Award in Wales for his role in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Alongside his success on stage, Evan is an active member of the choir, School Senedd, and local youth groups, while also balancing his responsibilities as a young carer. His positive attitude, creativity, and dedication make him a true inspi- ration. Isaac Palmer (Year 11) has been recognised for his remarkable resilience, determination, and personal growth. Beginning his journey in the Learning Support Centre, Isaac has progressed to become a confi- dent and successful member of the wider school community. He has already achieved several GCSE qualifications and plans to pursue Engineering at college. Despite facing challenges, Isaac approaches life with humour and determination, never allowing barriers to limit his ambitions. A school prefect and active member of the School Senedd, he is also a committed cadet and sportsman. Isaac is a positive role model who consistently supports others and embodies the values of perseverance and kindness. We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Rotary Club of Neath, which has supported and recognised the achievements of our pupils for many years. Established in 1929, the club has made a lasting contribution to our school and wider community. It is with great sadness that the Rotary Club will cease to exist at the end of this year. Their dedication, generosity, and commitment to young people will be sorely missed, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunities and recognition they have provided to so many of our pupils over the years. Geography — Daearyddiaeth Year 8 River Investigation at the River Clydach In June, our Year 8 pupils had the opportunity to visit the River Cly- dach as part of their Geography lesson. During the fieldwork, pupils conducted a river investigation, collecting data by measuring the river’s width, depth and flow speed at different locations. Back in the classroom, they analysed their findings, developed their data- handling skills and drew conclusions about how rivers change down- stream. Unfortunately, due to the exceptionally high temperatures experi- enced during the recent heatwave, not all classes were able to take part in the visit. Year 10 GCSE Geography Fieldwork Visit to Mumbles As part of their GCSE Geography Non-Exam Assessment (NEA), Year 10 pupils recently visited Mumbles to investigate the theme of “Change Over Time.” During the fieldwork, pupils collected a range of primary data, including questionnaires, tally charts of chain and independent stores, photographic evidence, and information linked to the concept of clone towns. The visit provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to develop valua- ble geographical enquiry skills by gathering and recording real-world data. Back in the classroom, pupils will analyse their findings, present their results using a variety of geographical techniques, and draw con- clusions before evaluating the effectiveness of their investigation. Well done to all pupils for their enthusiasm, engagement and excellent conduct throughout the visit.
Cymreag - Llangrannog At the end of June, a group of Year 7 pupils enjoyed an action-packed weekend at the Urdd’s Llangrannog centre. From the moment they arrived, our Year 7s threw them- selves into every activity. From skiing and quad biking to obstacle courses and the high ropes, the weekend was filled with action packed activities. Some brought out everyone's competitive side, with plenty of cheering, encouragement and lots of smiles. The sunshine made everything even better, especially the walk to the beach, where pupils cooled off with a paddle in the sea before enjoying a well-deserved ice cream. It was the perfect way to end an unforgettable weekend. Most importantly, the pupils showed fantastic teamwork, encouraged one another, and weren't afraid to have a go at something new. They represented the school bril- liantly and returned home with muddy clothes, happy memories, and enough stories to keep everyone entertained until the next adventure! Da iawn Blwyddyn 7!
Criw Cymreag This year the Criw Cymraeg have been promoting the Welsh language and Welsh history throughout the school and wider community. The Criw have led assemblies to all year groups to promote various Welsh events and historical events such as Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen, Owain Glyndŵr, Great Welshmen and their significance and Diwrnod Shwmae. The Criw Cymraeg and Adran Cymraeg put videos together for Diwrnod Shwmae and Dydd Gŵyl Dewi to include the school community in using and promoting the Welsh language and important events. These school-wide initiatives have contributed to pupils using Welsh phrases more often across the school com- munity and raising awareness of important Welsh celebrations that we should celebrate ourselves. The Criw Cymraeg have also raised money for Children in Need through a Welsh cake sale which was very successful. A Criw Cymraeg member baked a cake and sold the cake as a raffle to raise additional money for the charity. On Diwrnod Shwmae, the Criw Cymraeg celebrated through watching Y Llais together during lunchtime, a new Welsh language version of The Voice. The Caffi Cymraeg at Christmas has sparked a new tradition at Dwr Y Felin where the Criw Cymraeg mem- bers and their parents gather to promote the work of the Criw Cymraeg and celebrate achieving the Gold award with the Siarter Iaith which is a huge achievement for the school community, do fun activities to- gether and help their parents learn new Welsh phrases they could use in everyday life. The first Caffi Cym- raeg was successful with the local council and governors joining us to celebrate. Recently, some members of the Criw Cymraeg were a part of PHD research from a lecturer at Swansea University. The pupils discussed bilingualism and their connection and understanding to learning Welsh and bilingualism.
History—Hanes It has been another busy term in the History department. Year 7 enjoyed taking part in some role play as part of our study of ‘contenders to the throne’. Year 8 were challenged with problem solving on Henry VIII.

History—Hanes Year 7 historians and one of our GCSE History year 10 classes also enjoyed the opportunity of handling real ancient artefacts this term. The pupils learned about our local History and got to handle actual Roman artefacts, prehistoric flint and a bronze age axe head, amongst other items. This was a privilege and the pupils were very excited as they touched these precious items and had the opportunity to ask questions. Hands-on History at its best! A huge ‘Diolch’ to Harriet Eaton, Heritage Education Officer, for kindly giving up her time and expertise for our pupils.
History—HanesHistory—Hanes Year 8 pupils enjoyed our annual Neath Abbey cross-curricular skills day. Once again pupils had access to the wonderful undercroft where they had the opportunity to see rare treasures that were either discovered at the site or linked to the site, and speak to experts from Cadw, West Glamorgan Archives, Amgueddfa Cymru, NPT libraries and Neath Antiquarian Society. A huge diolch to these wonderful people who brought their treasures and generously gave up their time and expertise for our pupils.
History—HanesHistory—Hanes As part of our year 8 cross-curricular skills day, pupils also had the opportunity to study the craft of the stone masons and try their hands at making marks in stone, working with plaster and also pointing stone. Then they met a medieval expert on weapons, warfare and medicine. Gruesome stuff but they loved it! Then it was time for some Maths! How to work out the height of the Abbey using a clinometer (a tool used to measure the angle of a slope, elevation, or depression relative to gravity). Very clever! Da iawn pawb! They enjoyed the English activity in the inspiring surroundings of the cloisters. Lovely work done in this inspirational setting Finally, our pupils had the opportunity to speak to the creators of the representations that can be found at the site and get a sneak peek at the plans for forthcoming bronze pieces that will eventually be on display at the site. Fascinating stuff!
English — Saesneg Inspire Book Awards Day Trip A group of our students recently enjoyed a fantastic day out attending the Inspire Book Awards. The event celebrated a range of outstanding books and gave pupils the oppor- tunity to participate in activities designed to encourage a love of reading. Throughout the day, students listened to authors speak about their writing journeys, learned about the inspiration behind their stories, and took part in engaging discussions with other young readers. Performing Arts - Celfyddydau Perffornio A group of pupils were fortunate to perform with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales as part of a unique and inspiring musical experience with Cerdd NPT. The pupils spent the day rehearsing along- side professional musicians, developing their performance skills and gaining valuable insight into the dedication and teamwork required within a professional orchestra. The day culminated in a concert at the Brangwyn Hall, where the pupils performed to members of the local community. Their confidence and musicianship shone through, and they represented the school with pride and professionalism. The experience not only enhanced their musical abilities but also helped to build their self-esteem, communication skills, and appreciation of live performance. Through engaging and thought-provoking sessions, pupils learned about the key foundations of positive relationships, including respect, trust, communication, sup- port and healthy boundaries. The sessions also helped pupils recognise the signs of unhealthy relationships, such as controlling behaviour, pressure, lack of respect and poor communication, and highlighted where young peo- ple can seek support if they have concerns. To help our pupils to make good decisions about their own safety in the holidays many of our pupils have been learning about drowning prevention, and the RLSS UK, the drowning prevention charity, have asked us to share these important water safety tips with you to help you and your family to stay safe this summer.
