I believe architecture should create meaningful experiences by responding sensitively to people, place, and environment. This project rethinks conventional educational design by moving away from enclosed, rigid, and vertically stacked institutions toward a low-rise, climate-responsive, and free-flowing architecture campus. It envisions a porous, landscape-integrated learning environment where education extends beyond traditional classrooms into flexible open and semi-open spaces. Drawing from culturally rooted and climate-responsive elements such as courtyards, verandas, and transitional spaces, the design fosters interaction, collaboration, informal exchange, and experiential hands- on learning while enhancing thermal comfort and strengthening the connection with nature. By exploring how spatial planning and open en- vironments influence creativity, behaviour, and well-being, the project aims to create a human-centric architecture school that redefines the relationship between space, learning, and the built environment. Site Overview The selected site is located in Kakkanad, Kochi, Kerala, near the NH 66 corridor, and covers 78,280.91 sq.m (19.3 acres). It offers a balance between a peaceful natural setting and a well-connected urban environment. The site’s accessibility, open landscape, and scope for future expansion make it well suited for an architecture school. It supports the vision of creating a low-rise, interactive, and nature-integrated campus that encourages collaboration, creativity, and experiential learning.

Site Analysis The site slopes from +9 m to +1 m, with a central low point acting as a natural catchment where runoff accumulates. Being low-lying, it also collects sewage and stormwater, causing waterlogging and requiring proper drainage planning. Natural drainage flows towards the lower contour areas within the site, guiding surface runoff and en- abling efficient stormwater movement while reducing the risk of water accumulation in higher elevations. The site is near 10°N latitude, so the sun is almost over- head twice a year. It has high solar angles in both summer and winter, with strong east and west sunlight causing heat gain. Overall, the site receives high solar radiation throughout the year, affecting thermal com- fort. Natural drainage flows towards the lower contour areas within the site, guiding surface runoff and en- abling efficient stormwater movement while reducing the risk of water accumulation in higher elevations. The site presents contrasting environmental condi- tions, with significant traffic noise along the adjacent road edge and uninterrupted views towards the surrounding greenery and the bird sanctuary in the background. Existing vegetation is scattered across different zones of the site, creating a green landscape that enhances thermal comfort, supports local biodiversity, and can be incorporated into the site’s planning strategy.

Design Development The campus is organized as a spatial journey that re- sponds to the site’s environmental conditions. Begin- ning with a vibrant public edge facing the busy road, the design introduces green and thermal buffers that gradually mitigate noise and heat. This transition leads to a productive academic core that encourages collaboration and experiential learning, before cul- minating in a quiet zone dedicated to focused study and research. The sequence creates an environmental gradient—from noisy to productive to silent—ensuring that each function is located within the most appropri- ate acoustic and climatic setting. The building massing is oriented to maximize northern daylight while aligning with the prevailing sea and land breezes. Open courtyards, staggered blocks, and in- terconnected spaces allow wind to flow freely through the campus, creating naturally ventilated, well-lit, and thermally comfortable learning environments. Design Strategy The warm sea breeze is first tempered by shaded vegeta- tion, water channels, and verandas before being distributed through the building, where cross ventilation removes accumu- lated heat and creates comfortable activity spaces.

Concept The architecture school follows the concept of porosi- ty, using courtyards, voids, open corridors, and perme- able materials to create a breathable built environ- ment. This porous nature improves natural ventilation, visual connectivity, and encourages learning through observation and interaction. The building is elevated on stilts in response to Kerala’s flood-prone condi- tions. It steps down with the site’s natural contours, from higher to lower levels, minimizing flood risk in low-lying areas while allowing water to flow naturally beneath the structure.
