LEGACY AND LEADERSHIPEstablished in 1933 during the Great Depression, Carl Albert State College opened in the old Poteau High School building to provide local students with access to higher education without leaving home. The college paused operations during World War II, reopening to serve returning veterans and their families.FOUNDING ROOTS OUR NAMESAKECarl Albert State College proudly bears the name of Carl Albert, an Oklahoma native who served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and dedicated his life to public service, education, and leadership. TROJANS TO VIKINGSThe CAJC Trojan mascot, introduced in 1962, proudly represented Carl Albert Junior College for nearly three decades. In 1991, as the college transitioned to Carl Albert State College, the mascot was changed to the Viking, reflecting a new era of growth and a spirit of resilience and exploration. Today, the Viking continues to symbolize CASC’s commitment to strength, leadership, and student success.
