PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEEReimagining People’s Park Complex as Singapore’s Tropical Megastructure M.Arch Thesis Location: Chinatown, Singapore Date: Dec 2020 Typology: Mixed-Use Tutor: Prof. Li Xiaodong Individual project This thesis critically reexamines the heroic ambition of the modernist megastructure through People’s Park Complex (PPC), particularly Maki’s concept of the “City Room.” Once envisioned as a self-contained framework for collective urban life, PPC represents an era when architecture sought to resolve complex city issues through singular, monumental systems. Today, climate change, ecological pressures, carbon emissions, and changing lifestyles demand a different approach to the tropical megastructure. The project proposes a shift from the Heroic Megastructure to the Living Tropical Megastructure, where architecture becomes an open and adaptive urban system rather than a fixed object. Through breaking boundaries, connecting, and coexisting, the design introduces porous interfaces, layered public spaces, mixed-use programs, and ecological networks, allowing PPC to continuously adapt to climate, culture, collective memory, and changing patterns of everyday urban life. 1

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEEasoduas uoasod ubasd asoduas uoasod ubasd Dissolving Boundary reinterprets Fumihiko Maki’s “City Room”—originally conceived as an interiorized public space—by challenging the boundary between the megastructure and the city. Rather than preserving the building as an enclosed urban room, the proposed civc city room with existing structure becomes a framework for connection, linking architecture, landscape, circulation, and surrounding urban life. The intervention therefore shifts the City Room from an enclosed interior to an open-ended urban field. By selectively removing walls and slabs, the ground plane becomes porous, allowing movement, landscape, water, and community activities to flow across previously separated boundaries. The megastructure is no longer simply a container for public life, but becomes an active mediator between building and city, creating a New People’s Park for All.01 Drop-off 02 Library 03 Café 04 Gym 05 Vending machine 06 Grand Staircase 07 Table tennis 08 Bike-parking 09 Lift hall to office and hotel 10 ToiletsLegends:11 Car lift 12 Loading bay 13 Mechanical room 14 Elevated walkway to Pearl’s hill city park 15 Elevated walkway to Chinatown Complex 16 Elevated walkway to Chinatown 17 Chinatown MRT 01 02 03 07 08 08 09 09 04 04 11 13 10 12 14 15 16 17 10 06 05 a 05 05 06 4

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEEThe façade is conceived as an interwoven green lattice of vertical and horizontal planting. The south façade is denser, vegetated screen integrates with exposed staircases, forming a layered system of self-shading and thermal buffering, while the east, west, and north façades become more porous through varied openings. Together, the system creates a layered, breathable ecological interface that softens the boundary between interior and exterior. These three systems form an integrated mechanical and passive environmental strategy: assisted vertical ventilation, concealed air-conditioning, and exposed rainwater and airflow systems work together to reduce heat accumulation. The result is an open, communal, and thermally moderated hawker centre where environmental systems remain partially visible and contribute to the architectural expression. PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEE7 PANELa Kingspan Microhome Design Competition Location: No specific site Date: Apr 2025 Typology: Housing Role: Design, visuals & analysis Group project PANELa is an innovative microhome concept responding to today’s urgent housing and environmental crises. As cities become denser, land increasingly commodified, and conventional housing models struggle to adapt, PANELa proposes a modular, adaptable, and circular alternative that can evolve with its inhabitants while responding to diverse geographies, climates, and ways of living. Beyond a microhome, PANELa is conceived as a system, platform, and movement that rethinks housing as an evolving living system rather than a static shelter. By combining prefabricated modularity with localized, place-sensitive design strategies, PANELa aims to establish a global network of resilient, regenerative, and adaptable communities.

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEESingle Ben is still a university student, so he started with the basic PANELa Home. Stable Income Ben graduated and found a stable job. His PANELa Home improved little by little as his savings allowed. Couple Ben settled down in New Jersey and started living with his girlfriend. He bought a new connected Modula. Move for Better Future Ben requested to temporarily move to New Jersey to try an internship at a larger company. He informed PANELA of his move through the PANELA App Service. PANELA will proceed based on Ben's decision to either keep or sell his current home. In the meantime, a PANELA Home with the same layout will be set up at the New Jersey branch. Got a Pet! Ben proposed to his fiancée! They adopted a pet dog and decided to have children. To prepare for their growing family, Ben expanded his PANELa Home. Married with a kid Ben welcomed a baby boy! He expanded his PANELa Home, creating more space for his child and dog to explore. Expand Family Ben has enjoyed his PANELA Home subscription since the beginning of his PANELA journey. His housing debt did not stop him from having a second baby. Life is easier with PANELa. Legacy PANELA grew from nothing to a large family home, leaving behind cherished memories in every corner that evolved over time. The PANELA Home expanded beyond just a house; it became a village, a lasting legacy of Ben's journey. Life Chapter 9

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEE10 The Staging Ground Terraviva International Design Competition Bodegas Vinival Location: Valencia, Spain Date: Dec 2025 Typology: Cultural Role: Design, visuals & analysis Group project Once devoted to winemaking, Bodegas Vinival is reimagined as a living cultural destination where architecture, landscape, memory, and community intersect. Rather than treating the industrial winery as a relic, the project preserves its material traces and spatial character, transforming the former factory into a framework for cultural production, collective memory, and contemporary expression. The surrounding courtyards, terraces, and natural amphitheatres form a network of flexible public spaces for performances, markets, workshops, exhibitions, and everyday gathering. Through subtle and adaptable interventions, the dormant industrial structure becomes a dynamic cultural stage that evolves with each activity and community, creating an ongoing dialogue between past and present, heritage and innovation.

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEE13 The Gateway Asian eSport Centre Design Challenges, top 5 Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Date: July 2021 Typology: Sport & Recreation Role: Design, visuals & analysis Group project The competition objectives are to explore a potential architectural typology for future eSports venues. ‘The Gateway’ is envisioned as a festive gateway to Bukit Jalil, serving as a virtual and symbolic connector of people, eSports and legacy across time, geographies and virtual networks. It invites people to experience the excitement of competition, unity and victory, transforming these emotions into spatial qualities. Rather than treating the building itself as the primary design strategy, the proposal focuses on the journey of architecture and how people approach and experience the building through different emotional stages. Meanwhile, the form presents itself as a sensitive, context-conscious and contemporary impulse, responding to its surroundings while expressing the dynamic and evolving identity of eSports.

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEE16 Re:Union Bliss Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area: Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) ‘International Colleges Design and Construction Competition’, first place Location: Guangzhou, China Date: Dec 2020 Typology: Pavilion Role: Design, visuals & analysis Group project RE:Union Bliss is inspired by a blossoming lotus. The pure intention of the lotus flower is projected upward, representing an intense passion and gritty determination to rise above, while maintaining a blissful and elegant composition. The multifolds of foliage provide shelter and shades to visitors, while the juxtapositions of the branches nestles the safe harem for the waterfowls. In such blissful RE:Union, human and birds co- exist under the protection of the foliage. When one looks up, one will be in awed with the cheerful birds, frolicking, building love-nests and singing in blissful chirping echoes. Comes night fall, the spotlights on the ground are projected towards the ceiling of the inner foliage, creating a blissful atmosphere and visual delights, where one will be able to appreciate the crafts of the weaving bamboo patterns from underneath. Cruising along the waterways, the shadow of the large hanging foliage are cast onto water, creating a folding reflections of a lotus flower, when sky meets water; such view is flanked by small floating lotus flowers (similar to loi-kratung) suggesting a RE:Union Bliss - a mutual co-exitence between human and birds, and blissful harmony between heaven and earth.

PORTFOLIO | LIM CHEN HEE19 Dream Home Archasm Competition, top 50 Location: No Specific Site Date: June 2020 Typology: Conceptual Role: Design, visuals & analysis Group project The design explores the idea of the “dream home” beyond material prosperity, as a medium connecting people through shared consciousness. The unexpected falling of debris becomes a metaphor for the convergence of perception, experience and knowledge, awakening dreamers to deeper spiritual insights and new ways of seeing. Rather than focusing solely on the architectural object, the project develops a methodology for accessing a dream world where transient perceptions intersect with reality. Through the interplay of solid and void and phenomenological elements, architecture becomes an ephemeral landscape that embraces the fleeting nature of existence and offers glimpses into a deeper state of consciousness.
