05Tanzania: Where Nature Meets the English Language Tanzania, officially known as the United Republic of Tanzania, is a majestic country located in East Africa, right below the equator. It is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east and surrounded by eight countries, including Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia. The official capital is Dodoma, while Dar es Salaam remains the largest city and the main commercial hub. Tanzania is world-famous for its unparalleled natural beauty. It is home to Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Additionally, the country hosts the world- renowned Serengeti National Park, famous for the spectacular annual Great Migration of millions of wildebeests and zebras. If you look toward the coast, you will find the beautiful, spice-scented tropical island of Zanzibar, filled with white-sand beaches and deep historical roots. The English Connection 06 Tanzania has a unique linguistic landscape. The national language is Swahili (or Kiswahili), which beautifully unites more than 120 different ethnic groups. However, English is also an official language, serving as a co- official language alongside Swahili. This connection began in the 20th century when the region came under British administration after World War I. When Tanzania gained its independence in 1961 under the leadership of Julius Nyerere, the country chose to keep English to ensure global communication. Higher Education: While primary schools teach in Swahili, secondary schools and universities use English as the main medium of instruction. Here are some essential expressions: 2. "Safari" Meaning: "Journey" or "Expedition." Context: Originally a standard Swahili word for any travel, it was adopted into the English language worldwide specifically to describe a trip to observe wildlife in Africa. 3. "Pole pole" Meaning: "Slowly, slowly." Context: Often used by English-speaking tour guides when travelers are climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a philosophy of taking life at a steady, calm pace. 4. "To welcome someone" (Local English Nuance) Context: In Tanzanian English, people often use the word "Welcome!"
