The Living Heritage of Lingayen - Cultural Booklet

This booklet was created by civil engineering students as a cultural documentation project. It presents the tangible and intangible heritage of Lingayen, the capital of Pangasinan in the Ilocos Region. The document is intended for readers interested in local history, cultural preservation, and Philippine provincial heritage.

This is a student-produced cultural booklet about the municipality of Lingayen, Pangasinan. It was created by a group of civil engineering students as a project on heritage preservation. The document explores both tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the capital town.

The booklet opens with a description of the Pangasinan Provincial Capitol building, a Neoclassical structure with eight columns and a grand staircase facing Lingayen Gulf. It discusses the building's architectural symbolism and its survival through World War II.

It then covers Lingayen bagoong, a traditional fermented fish product made from small fish or shrimp and salt. The text explains the traditional salting and fermentation process, the product's reddish-brown color and distinctive aroma, and its role in local livelihood and cultural identity.

Two cultural performances are documented: the Oasioas folk dance, where performers balance lighted oil lamps on their heads, and the Pista'y Dayat festival, an annual coastal celebration with parades, dances, and beach activities. The festival is described as merging pre-colonial thanksgiving rituals with Catholic traditions.

The booklet also discusses indigenous and colonial influences on local culture, including pre-colonial salt making and fish fermentation in clay jars, and the blending of traditions in the fluvial parade. Contemporary expressions include buri fiber weaving into modern fashion accessories.

The final sections identify threats to cultural heritage such as climate change, coastal erosion, and modernization. Preservation strategies proposed include digital archiving with 3D scans, community education programs, and local legislation to protect historic sites. A bibliography of sources is included.
