STUDY GUIDE & CORE CONCEPTS A figure of speech is a creative way of using words to make language more interesting, colorful, and meaningful. It is commonly used in stories, poems, songs, advertisements, and everyday conversations. Figures of Speech Metaphor Compares two unlike things by saying one is the other. Example: My little brother is a monkey when he plays. Simile Compares two unlike things using the words like or as. Example: The pillow was as soft as a cloud. Hyperbole Uses extreme exaggeration to emphasize a grand idea. Example: I was so hungry I could eat a whole pizza! Personification Gives human qualities or actions to animals or objects. Example: The sun smiled at us this morning. Sound Devices Alliteration Repeats the same beginning consonant sound in nearby words. Example: Peter picked pretty purple flowers. Assonance Repeats the same vowel sound inside nearby words. Example: The rain in Spain faills mainly on the plain. Consonance Repeats the same consonant sound anywhere in the words. Example: The black duck quacked back. Onomatopoeia Uses words that imitate real, natural sounds perfectly. Example: The bees went buzz around the flowers. 2
