CORAL REEFSA coral reef is an underwater ecosystem characterized by reef-building corals, which are colonies of tiny animals called polyps that secrete hard calcium carbonate skeletons. Although they cover less than 1% of the ocean floor, these structures support approximately 25% of all marine species, earning them the nickname "rainforests of the sea." Reefs are primarily formed by stony corals (hard corals) in warm, shallow, tropical waters where sunlight penetrates for photosynthesis. The three main types of reef formations are fringing reefs, which grow close to shorelines; barrier reefs, which are separated from land by deeper lagoons; and atolls, which are circular reefs often surrounding sunken volcanic islands. These ecosystems provide critical services including coastal protection from storms and waves, fisheries support, and significant economic value through tourism and resources.
