In today's modern world of internet, social media, innovations and socio-economic crisis, can you still define the difference between needs and wants? Defining both needs and wants will lead to effective choices, that can significantly affect our daily lives and future decisions. Companies especially with the use of social media and marketing are continuously labelling and advertising expensive and "trendy" goods as a need for consumers, often leading to over-consumption, scarcity of resources and life dissatisfaction when not attained. Looking at different perspectives, humans should prioritize basic needs over "luxury" wants, for it can provide contentment and a happier life.Needs and Wants:Needs and Wants: How modern living redefines the meaning of bothHow modern living redefines the meaning of both Needs and Wants: How modern living redefines the meaning of both Needs and Wants:Needs and Wants: How modern living redefines the meaning of bothHow modern living redefines the meaning of both

According to the Maslow's pyramid, created by a famous pyschologist named Abraham Maslow, the physiological needs is the most essential biological requirement for human survival and well-being, includes air, food, sleep, water, clothes and shelter. Other needs in their hierarchy order includes safety needs, love and belonging, esteem needs and self actualization. From the economics perspective, needs are defined as vital requirements for living that technically should be satisfied. On the other hand, wants are desires influenced by culture, personality and marketing, and these are insatiable. Consumers choice to choose needs versus wants dictates the demand and scarcity of resources or supply. Where more needs lead to more demands.

Meanwhile, in Catholic theology, the distinction of needs and wants are evaluated through stewardship, faith and distribution of goods. Where they believe that God created resources for the use of ALL human beings. Moreover, according to the Cathecism of the Catholic Church (CCC 2403), St. Thomas Aquinas emphasized that "A person urgent in basic survival needs override another persons secondary wants or surplus property". Meaning it is not a sin for a starving human to get someone else's excess food for it is to restore God's intention of sharing resources. Where Catholicism promotes simplicity and inner peace. Additionally, Pope Francis highlighted in his encyclical Laudato Si' , "that consumers capitalism thrives on creating artificial wants". He also advocated to avoid buying unnecessary things.

While in the modern era, the definition of wants and needs becomes confusing, choice-dependent and discretionary. Furthermore, sociologist concluded that modern digital economy can transition a want to a need. Like how smart phones and internet became a new mean of communication, instrument for safety (GPS), information dissemination and as a tool for employment like vlogging, the BPO industry etc. Biologist and anthropologist, define needs as evolutionary survival and adaptation. For example, owning a car became a need in our modern living to adapt in our fast pacing environment. Humans desire for comfort, quality living and social status eventually justifies the transformation of wants to modern needs.

As we lean closer in the modernized world, global trends and new environments continuously redefines the definition of both, especially needs. With the guide of the Maslow's Pyramid, we can easily identify and differentiate what to prioritize. Meanwhile in economics, needs should be satisfied. Moreover, saints and popes deeply implies that needs are fundamental, where excess properties are stolen from those who lack. In addition, needs are insatiable and how we react and manipulate things always comes from the choices we make. Without a doubt, we can safely say that people should prioritize needs over wants. Where they can attain contentment, simplicity, and learn proper life decisions. Because with the ability to differentiate both from each other, we can avoid peer pressure, impulsive buying, and envy, especially with the rise of social media.

Final Reflection and Call to ActionFinal Reflection and Call to ActionFinal Reflection and Call to ActionFinal Reflection and Call to ActionFinal Reflection and Call to ActionWe have learned that needs will always matter more than wants because of how we evolved into this modern era, leading us with a lot of needs. There will always be wants which is a better more comfortable object, item, or service for us than what we really just need. Since we evolved to this era where old wants are now needs, it is fundamental to differentiate the two in order to identify what we need instead of what we want. We urge everyone to stop and think, "Is this really what we/I need? Or is this something we/I just want." whenever planning to buy or get something. After some time, someday, somehow, we will all learn to only get what is needed for our living. We are all liable for the things we spend our money on, and with our current economic state, a little self discernment and wise thinking wouldn't hurt. Therefore we must be meticulous in buying products, in order to avoid wasting money and resources. Because social trends and peer pressure are seasonal, LEAN ON WHAT MATTERS.

The world has enough for everyone’s need, but not enough for everyone’s greed. - Mahatma Gandhi
