From the Headmaster’s Office Dear learners, parents, teachers, sponsors and Strand High School I believe that we are all born with unique talents, many of which we only truly discover and unpack as we grow older. This week, we are granted the incredible opportunity to showcase those talents as we take the field and the stage against our respected opponents, the Eagles from Hoërskool Strand. Part of being human is our ability to create and cherish precious memories that last a lifetime. Interschools offers the ideal opportunity for such moments. Winning is great, but it is not the most important aspect of sport. My wish is that we show deep respect and excellent sportsmanship towards our opponents, for that is what this week is truly about. Values like commitment, hard work, integrity, respect, and discipline are seamlessly integrated into sport and culture. This is precisely why we want to inspire every learner to participate in Interschools. We know that the sports fields and cultural stages are merely preparation for real life. As educators, our ultimate goal is to send every learner out into the world with these core values deeply embedded in their character. Leading from the front is our exceptional captain, Chris Henning, who achieved a monumental milestone by earning his Springbok colours and representing South Africa in Malaysia. This phenomenal accomplishment has inspired our entire school community. Showcasing our rising stature in the chess world, Melkies also recently hosted the District North Top Schools tournament, welcoming the region's best talent to our home ground. deur Nada jooste Interskole is ‘n dag vol groot gees en kosbare herinneringe, waar leerders en spanmaats hulle harte uitspeel op die baan en veld en hulle bloed, sweet en passie daar los. Maar iets wat ons almal dikwels miskyk van hierdie dag, is die groep mense wat agter die skerms die wiele aan die rol hou en die hele byeenkoms moontlik maak. Afrigters sit ure se werk in en offer hulleself, asook hulle tyd, op om hulle spelers voor te berei. Hulle is bereid om hulle kennis en ervaring vrywillig te deel sodat die spelers tot die beste van hulle vermoë kan presteer. Die noodhulppersoneel staan altyd reg om hulp aan te bied. Hulle tree met kalmte op en hanteer elke situasie met sorg wat leerders laat gemaklik voel. Dit is ‘n voorreg om ‘n hardwerkende span te hê wat nie net vir hulle eie span nie, maar ook hulle opponent omgee. Die terreinpersoneel begin reeds vroegoggend die skoolgronde en veld regkry. Hulle is al daar voor die dagafskop, besig om gras te sny, bane te verf en soos die dag eindig, ruim hulle op en maak seker alles is neties en weggepak. Beamptes en skeidsregters sorg weer dat wedstryde regverdig verloop, selfs wanneer hulle onder groot druk moeilike besluite moet neem. Hulle gee regverdige oordeel en maakseker dat die opwindende spanbou-aktiwiteite en items binne perke geniet kan word. Hierdie mense is die onsigbare helde van Interskole. Hulle werk stilweg, sonder applous of medaljes, maar hul bydrae maak ‘n enorme verskil. Die waarheid is dat die dag nie sonder hulle so glad sal verloop nie en dus word daar na hulle verwys as die helde van interskole. As ons dus die volgende keer juig vir oorwinning, behoort ons ook dankbaar te wees vir die mense wat agter die skerms met toewyding werk sodat elke leerder ’n onvergeetlike Interskole kan beleef. by Lami Gqamane Participating in interschools competitions is a transformative experience that every student should have at least once. These events go far beyond winning trophies; they serve as essential life lessons that cannot be taught in a classroom alone. Firstly, interschools promote a deep sense of teamwork and community. When students represent their school, they put their differences aside and come together as one to support their community and help one another triumph. This not only builds strong friendships and teaches the value of partnership, but also builds confidence while creating opportunities for personal growth. Working alongside one another helps students develop empathy, communication, and social skills, and a collective sense of responsibility. Secondly, these competitions teach learners important values, such as discipline and resilience. Facing other opponents, especially those who are immensely skilled, introduces a healthy level of pressure. Winning builds confidence, while losing teaches students how to handle disappointment with grace, maturity and determination. Experiencing both outcomes helps young people grow into emotionally strong individuals who can overcome the challenges of the future. Interschools are not just about sports or academic contests. It is about personal growth. Every student should participate at least once to discover their potential, build character, and create lasting memories.
