All around you, the sound of crosscut saws, shouting teamsters, and the screeching whistles of the Pere Marquette steam engines echoed across the Tuscola and Lapeer county lines.The Boom Town at the End of the LineFostoria owes its true frontier birth to two things: cork pine and the railroad.While towns further south were settling into peaceful farming, the north woods were still untamed wilderness. Timber barons like Henry H. Crapo—who would go on to become Governor of Michigan—realized that the towering white pines in this region were worth more than gold.When the Pere Marquette branch line laid its tracks through Otter Lake and dead-ended into Fostoria in 1881, the sleepy logging outpost transformed overnight into a bustling boomtown. Boxcars sat lined up along the sidings day and night, waiting to be stacked sky-high with sawn boards, shingle bolts, and massive logs destined for rebuilding Midwest cities.A Day in the Life of a Michigan “Shanty Boy”The pioneers of Fostoria weren’t cowboys with six-shooters—they were “shanty boys” (as Michigan loggers were known back then) and sawyers. Before dawn, logger crews headed out into the timber stands equipped with double-bitted axes and crosscut saws. During the cold Michigan winters, crews sprayed water over dirt trails overnight to create “ice roads,” allowing horse teams to pull massive sleighs loaded with tens of thousands of pounds of timber toward the railhead.In the warmer months, Fostoria relied on another famous Michigan invention: Overpack’s Big Wheels. These 10-foot-tall wooden wheels lifted massive pine logs off the muddy forest floor, allowing teamsters to haul timber out of the woods even when the snow melted.After a 12-hour shift in the woods or at the steam mill, the workers gathered at local boarding houses and general stores. The town buzzed with news arriving by telegraph, the clatter of supply wagons, and stories spun around potbelly stoves.
