Chapter 2 Birthday Present It is Sunday and it is Fat’s birthday. In the morning his mum and dad come into his room. “Wake up, dear! Happy birthday to you!” they say. “Here is your present!” Fat opens his eyes and sees a bike. It is very beautiful. It is red and blue and has very big wheels. “Oh, thank you very much!” cries Fat. “Can I go to the yard and cycle?” “Yes, you can,” his parents say, “but come home at noon. Your friends come at three o’clock. You must tidy your room, lay the table and cook pizza.” “OK, mummy!” says Fat. “Don’t worry! I know I must do it.” Fat’s mum looks at him and says, “Oh, dear, look out of the window! It is sunny and warm. Take off your trousers, jumper and trainers. Put on some shorts, a T-shirt and sandals.” Fat takes off the warm clothes and puts on his yellow shorts, a red T-shirt and green sandals. “Oh, I look cute!” he says when he looks in the mirror. And he goes downstairs with his bike.
Chapter 3 IN THE YARD In the yard he sees his friends Funny and Naughty. They are on the playground. “Hi!” cries Fat. “Oh, Fat, we are glad to see you. Happy birthday! Why do you look like traffic lights?” laughs Naughty. “I don’t. I look cute!” says Fat. “What have you got?” asks Naughty. “I have got a bike. It’s my birthday present!” “Oh, great! Can I ride it?” asks Naughty. “Oh, Naughty, but I want to ride it myself!” says Fat. “OK,” says Naughty. So Fat climbs upon his bike and starts cycling. There is a small gate in the fence of the yard. Fat wants to ride through the gate. But the gate is too small for him. So his bike goes through and Fat gets stuck in the gate. “Help me, help me!” cries Fat. “Catch my bike!” Funny and Naughty run to catch the bike. It isn’t easy but at last they do it. They climb upon the bike and come back to Fat.
“Oh, now help me, please! I can’t hang here like this! I must be at home at noon!” cries Fat. Funny and Naughty run up to him. “Oh, you look so funny!” laughs Funny. “Don’t laugh! Please, get me down!” cries Fat. Funny and Naughty first pull him then push him, but nothing helps. “Run to my mum!” cries Fat. So Funny and Naughty run to Fat’s mum very fast. They tell her all the story. She takes a bottle of olive oil and runs to her poor son. When she comes up to him she opens the bottle and pours the oil down on Fat. “What are you doing?” shouts Fat. “I’m helping you, dear,” answers his mum. “Oh, I’m falling!” cries Fat and falls down on the grass.
Chapter 4 Fat’s Birthday Party So Fat goes home with his mum and his bike. Mum puts him in the bath tub and washes him with a lot of soap. When he is clean, it is half past two. “Oh, dear!” cries Fat’s mum. “Your friends are coming soon and we are not ready!” So Fat goes to tidy his room and his mum goes to cook pizza and lay the table. At ten past three two of Fat’s friends come. They are Funny and Naughty. “Happy birthday to you!” says Naughty and gives Fat a big bottle of olive oil. The boys laugh, but Fat is angry, he wants to cry, but his friends say, “Don’t be angry. It’s a joke! Best wishes on your ninth birthday!” And they give Fat a big box. When Fat opens it, he sees a CD, a book about animals and a big jar of jam. “Thank you, friends!” says Fat and smiles. They sit down to watch a cartoon. Soon come Noisy and Clever. They give Fat a big cake, an apple pie and a box of chocolates. Fat is happy. It is half past four but Slow isn’t there.
“Where is Slow?” asks Fat. “We don’t know,” answer the children. “Let’s phone her!” And they phone Slow. But she isn’t at home. So the children sit down at the table. They eat and drink, talk and watch films and cartoons. Then they dance and sing, and Clever plays the piano. After that, they listen to new CDs. It is a very merry birthday party!
