NEEDSChocolates may have killed someone. Choosing what you want over what you need is dangerous when frequent for everyone. Imagine this a squishy is trending and everyone wants to buy it, again another thing is trending, and another, and another. There are many people who buy these unnecessary things on a frequent basis, because of this they often lose track of their spendings and their needs are often overshadowed. Needs and wants are very different from each other, needs is your daily supplication, things that you need to pass your daily life whilst wants is the things that make you happy, things that you don’t necessarily need but give you joy. Today wants is closer to needs than ever, most people prioritize being happy in having things that don’t help them financially rather than focusing on their daily needs. Teenagers, young adults, and all are affected by this. Trends, new devices, and more propaganda are increasing the demand for wants even more. Knowing how both can be balanced is a must for equality, you can live your life daily with your needs and you can be happy with the things you want. People should focus on buying their daily needs first instead of frequently purchasing trendy squishes, accessories, upgrades to their phones that are in good condition, and things that won’t give them enjoyment for a long time.
Now a days social media can be a large influence in buying what people want because of trends. Jayma et al. (2025) examined 345 students and their activities when it comes to being exposed to social media and their buying behavior. It showed results equaling to p= 0.517 meaning the exposure had a positive correlation in buying and consuming. Because of this we can see how social media exposure can be an influence for consumer choices. Discernment is a must to choose wisely and not be blinded by such advertising.https://ijmaberjournal.org/index.php/ijmaber/article/view/2874Having wants is not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, purchasing things that bring joy can contribute to a person's happiness and well being. Some may argue that wants are just as important as needs because they provide satisfaction, enjoyment, and motivation. However even if wants can improve our lives, they should not take priority over essential expenses and responsibilities. A person may enjoy purchasing a trending toy, but that enjoyment should not come at the expense of food, education, or other necessities. Therefore, the responsible choice is not to eliminate wants but to practice temperance and prioritize needs before spending on unnecessary items. It isn’t necessarily wrong but you need to balance your funding towards certain objects and bills to keep your equality in check. But because of demand and trendy objects many people want in and because of this their thinking gets affected by their wants going above their natural thinking.
Thinking, buying, and using correctly are core essentials for a consumer, for all in fact. Consumers must now what they will do with the things they buy, they must have a clear judgment if what they’re buying is right and if it is a legitimate need whilst managing their funding towards such objects . Money isn’t the only thing that matters when being a buyer/consumer but your own moral choices. According to the Department of Education in Davao de Oro (2024), when consuming, self-control is a large part of determining what happens with the things you buy and your financial state. Instead of making rash decisions based on sudden trends having a good moral stand like being a critical thinker and not letting emotions get ahead of your buying, people today can have a much clearer judgement and can buy things for the right reason. Instead of using our money to buy nonsensical products we can allocate that money to help others as another virtue of being a responsible consumer is being a giver and using what we have to the fullest of good.https://rsisinternational.org/journals/ijriss/articles/financial-literacy-and-self-control-as- the-predicting-variables-to-the-financial-behavior-of-senior-high-school-students/? categories%5B0%5D=education
YOU are responsible for yourself, you are a steward in your own life, and YOU can take care of your home. With what you buy it can have an effect on many things, because if this it prompts you to think about a lot of variables when choosing what to do with the things you buy. An example of this is the environmental impact of consumers purchasing certain things that would have a bad effect on the environment if not handled properly. Sustainable handling practices and correct use of purchases is a must for consumers and all should give light to learn and understand how big of an effect this has on many people stated by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI, 2022).https://www.dti.gov.ph/dti-archives/dti-news-archived/dti-dti-gears-up- consumer-welfare-month-2022?
People should focus on what they need rather than purchasing material things that won’t give them a long time purpose, especially things that last for a short time like trending toys and other accessories. Wants is still a key part of living, without the things you want you wont be able to satisfy yourself and receive happiness, wants is not just a feeling but the things we buy and eat. Wants is still just as important as needs but if we don’t balance them out and fund them correctly financial problems may arrive. Think responsibly and think ahead of time, understanding what you buy and how it affects your present and future makes all the more difference in purchasing in the sense of using your judgement to steward yourself towards correct decisions. We must think and pick correctly when buying and not let demand cloud our decisions.
