The course is designed to equip you with essential information, practical preparation, and actionable steps to effectively support students participating in the regional competition.Takes approximately eight hours to complete when followed diligently and carefully. Built-in self-checks and evaluations are included throughout the course to help reinforce your learning. Upon successful completion of the module, there will be a final test. 80% is needed to pass and a certificate of completion will be provided. LA STEM Collective For the past two years, LA STEM Collective and a robust coalition of organizations have been developing a new interactive platform, Stitch, which launched this fall. The platform connects educators and parents to enrichment activities throughout Greater Los Angeles. It has been an honor to collaborate with The Greater Los Angeles Education Foundation, Getty (and others!) to bring Stitch to life. PLANET STEWARDS From the classroom to the community, the National Earth Science Teachers Association is committed to continuing the efforts of the NOAA Planet Stewards Education Project, supporting educators in building a more sustainable future. We are proud to champion this initiative offering 10 opportunities of up to $5000 to support hands-on, action- based stewardship projects that engage elementary through college age students, as well as the public. Awarded stewardship projects must make a substantive, measurable impact on an environmental issue related to their community. Awardees completing their stewardship project along with the reporting requirements may be invited to: Represent NESTA Planet Stewards at a national science education conference or Planet Stewards workshops to share their work. Student Events and Opportunities CLUB FOR THE FUTURE Founded by Blue Origin, Club for the Future is a nonprofit with the mission to inspire and mobilize future generations to pursue careers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) for the benefit of Earth. The Club and its partners are doing this through the Postcards to Space program, providing space-focused lessons and events, and activating ambassadors around the world. To date, Club for the Future has engaged with millions of individuals through our programs, initiatives, and collaborations. Club for the Future creates meaningful experiences for all children to see themselves working in space for the benefit of humankind. We are doing this through the following initiatives: 1. Access to Space: our signature program, Postcards to Space, aims to inspire the next generation of world changers. Anyone can create a postcard, send it to space onboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, and receive it back as a space-flown-keepsake. Postcards to Space democratizes access to space for all while encouraging the next generation to answer the question, “Why do you think Earth needs Space?” Learn more about this program and send art to space on Club’s digital platform or download the paper template. 2. Educational Lesson Plans: Club for the Future offers free, accessible, standards-aligned space- inspired educational content that has been designed by teachers for teachers. Club Ambassadors Program: Club encourages every Blue Origin team member to share subject matter expertise to inspire the next-generation workforce through school visits, speaking opportunities, events, and mentoring. Partnerships: We support our partners and other organizations to reach children in all communities so they can see themselves pursuing STEAM careers. International Genetically Engineered Machine Team Genesis is recruiting (actively seeking 9th-11th graders) for iGEM, the world’s largest student synthetic biology competition. Student Events and Opportunities GAINS IN THE EDUCATION OF MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (GEMS) For middle and high school students, Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is a summer STEM enrichment program that takes place at participating Army Research Centers and Laboratories. GEMS’ mission is to interest young people, who might not otherwise give serious thought to becoming scientists or engineers, in STEM careers early enough that they can attain the appropriate academic training. UNITE For high school students, Unite is a pre- collegiate summer experience held at higher education institutions across the country. Unite encourages students to pursue college majors and careers in engineering and other STEM- related fields through a program of focused hands-on rigorous academics, enrichment and career exploration. LEARN MORE RESET For teachers, Research Experiences for STEM Educators and Teachers (RESET) provides an opportunity to get summer research experience at participating U.S. Army Laboratories and Centers. This enriching reinforces teachers’ content knowledge through research experience and interactions with U.S. Army and DoD scientists and engineers. Student Events Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Competition Opens to Students in the U.S. and Canada ExploraVision, the world’s largest K–12 science competition, challenges students to envision and communicate new technology 10 or more years in the future. In teams of two to four, students identify a problem facing our world today and research scientific principles and technologies to design innovative new solutions that could address this problem. This fun and engaging program can inspire a lifelong love of science, technology, and innovation for students and teachers alike. Winners will present their ideas to executives from Toshiba, NSTA, and other VIPs. Participants can win prizes, including $10,000 U.S. Series EE Savings Bonds (at maturity). Register your teams now so they can get a head start on their projects. Mobile Education Unit (MEU) for a presentation on Clean Energy Workforce Development. The presentation is an engaging session that highlights California’s clean energy goals, career opportunities in the clean energy sector, and resources available to students, especially those interested in STEM and Career Technical Education. It is completely free and supports SCE’s mission to educate and empower future professionals. We are also introducing our new platform called Interplay for students. Interplay Learning enables real-world trades skills by turning any setting into a 3D job site with virtual reality simulations. The session usually lasts about one hour, but we are happy to extend it to two or three hours if you would like us to set up the MEU booth on campus for students to stop by and explore. NASA STIDENT LAUNCH It actually IS rocket science! Student Launch is a 9-month long challenge that tasks student teams from across the U.S. to design, build, test, and launch a high-powered rocket carrying a scientific or engineering payload. It is a hands-on, research-based, engineering activity and culminates each year with a final launch in Huntsville, Alabama home of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. The activity offers multiple challenges reaching a broad audience colleges and universities as well as middle and high school aged students across the nation ECYBER MISSION ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE eCYBERMISSION is a free, web-based STEM competition for 6th to 9th graders that allows students the opportunity to identify problems and work towards solutions to challenges within their communities. Students discover the applications and relevance of STEM education, as well as how they can make a difference using STEM. The program was developed by the U.S. Army to engage a broad spectrum of America's youth, as well as inspire future careers in STEM.

Teacher Opportunities Please note that registration is open for CSUN's free online CHEMISTRY-II CSET-prep workshop. Registration is also open for the online PHYSICS-II CSET-prep workshop offered in June. The cost is $275 for the 40-hour synchronous online workshop. It is quite likely that the workshop will fill, so I suggest registering sooner rather than later. Finally, California State University Northridge is now accepting applications for Cohort-12 of our online Master’s Degree program in Science Education, which will start in Fall, 2026. YOUTH CLIMATE INSTITUTE YCI is excited to invite both educators to an upcoming interest meeting focused on launching local high school chapters. These sessions are a great opportunity to learn how YCI empowers young people with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to lead on climate science, environmental justice, and real-world solutions. We are inviting districts nationwide to participate in a federally funded two-year research study to better understand the effect of a literacy-integrated science curriculum on children’s science learning. Participants in the study will receive funding per teacher and per school site to participate, and if they are willing to pilot use Amplify Science, a K–12 standards-aligned curriculum, will also receive free PD and materials. There is growing evidence that science knowledge and literacy build on each other. Using an NGSS-aligned curriculum with a focus on early literacy has the potential to help teachers dedicate time to science, and scaffold students’ science learning. Schools and teachers that participate in the study will receive: · $5,000 per school/year · $1,000 per participating teacher/year (in accordance with district policies) · (If piloting Amplify) Amplify K–1 curriculum + classroom materials, free of charge for two years · 1.5 days/year of professional learning for participating teachers This study will run from Fall 2026 through Spring 2028. CONFERENCES Cultivating Change: The Environmental Literacy Educators' Conference Year 2 We welcome all educators to register and join us as we explore environmental issues to understand climate change and its impacts on communities. The conference will begin on Day 1 with a film screening of The Cigarette Surfboard—an immersive documentary that provides viewers with an up-close experience of the ocean through surfers’ eyes to amplify a message of urgency and possibility regarding the ocean’s wellbeing. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the producer and a display of the surfboard for photography. Sponsored Parking will be provided. Light refreshments will be provided before the film screening. On Day 2, the conference will continue at the Orange County Department of Education, where there will be a Keynote Address from Dr. Symone Giles (Assistant Professor, Education, UCI School of Education) and environmental learning sessions from educators across Orange County. These sessions will explore the Seeds to Solutions Environmental Literacy Online Curriculum and how to integrate Environmental topics into Math, Physical Education, and other subject matters. Marine Science Floating Laboratory Grades 4-12 The Marine Science Floating Laboratory provides students and teachers with the opportunity to explore the biodiversity of the marine ecosystem through hands-on field study during a 3-4 hour cruise in and around Los Angeles Harbor. Students collect and release marine organisms for observation and study. Investigations are customizable, but generally include: plankton collection and observation, marine mammal observation, bottom sediment sampling and observation, otter trawl catch and observation of adaptation and morphology, water quality and physical oceanography. Outdoor and Marine Science Field Studies Los Angeles County Outdoor Science School Grades 3-12 The Outdoor Science School provides rigorous, hands-on, standards-based science field study in the beauty and wonder of nature’s classroom. Scientific thinking processes, critical and evaluative thinking skills, group collaboration and direct instruction combine to provide the very best science instruction. Students participate in over 27 hours of small group instruction while attending the Outdoor Science School. The Los Angeles County Outdoor Science Schools are regularly certified by the California State Department of Education and are widely recognized for excellence in education. Outdoor Learning Environments Outdoor learning has been proven to offer students a range of benefits, from enhancing engagement to reducing stress and promoting physical and psychological well being. When we take lessons outside our classroom walls, we teach our children that learning can happen anywhere and anytime, promoting lifelong curiosity. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced educators to reimagine and be creative with outdoor space as a way to support the reopening of campuses given the lower risk of virus transmission. Yet far too many of our young people, particularly those in inner-city and low- income communities, have not had access to outdoor learning environments and green space—not before nor during the pandemic. This inequity is one of many long-standing educational injustices that COVID-19 has laid bare. Yet I see a silver lining and the chance to seize this moment to transform our education system with strategies that place priority on meeting the needs of the whole child. My commitment is to advocate for a collective investment in such approaches, surrounding our most vulnerable students with the resources they need to succeed and fostering positive, healthy learning environments. Increasing opportunities for outdoor learning is essential to advancing educational equity. I am delighted that the Los Angeles County Office of Education was able to partner with engineering and construction experts to develop these design guidelines. They are a valuable resource for educators and facilities professionals in developing effective outdoor learning environments that serve the needs of their school communities.
