NeedswantsDo you want it or need it? Choose wisely.

Explanation

“Should I buy a designer bag?”“should I buy designer clothes before paying my bills?”Every day, people make decisions about how to spend their money. Some choose to buy food, school supplies, and other important things, while others spend money on designer clothes, gadgets, and entertainment. Although wants can bring happiness, needs should always come first because they support our health, safety, education, and future.“Should I save up my money or eat something sweet?”

Needs are things people require to live safely and maintain their well being. These include food, clean water, shelter, basic clothing, healthcare, and education. Wants are things that make life more enjoyable but are not always necessary, such as expensive jewelries, the newest iphone, or branded shoes. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) states that budgeting can help people manage their income and expenses. A useful method is the 50-30-20 rule, this rule divided money into 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings.NeedsWants

The 50-30-20 rule divides money into 50% for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings. For example, if a graduate student receives ₱100k for college, they can set aside ₱50k for needs, ₱30k for wants, and ₱20k for savings, depending on their actual expenses. This shows how budgeting helps people spend wisely and prepare for the future. Moreover, following this rule helps students learn how to use their money wisely at a young age. Saving money helps them prepare for unexpected expenses and future needs. This rule helps students become more responsible with their money and prepares them for the future. The 50-30-20 rule

Christian teachings also support the idea that needs should come before wants In Luke 14:28, Jesus teaches the importance of calculating the cost before building a tower, reminding us to plan before making decisions. In Proverbs 21:5 it teaches that careful planning leads to good results, while careless decisions can lead to problems. If we spend all our money on luxury items while neglecting food, education, or our family's needs, we fail to manage our resources responsibly.Luke 14:28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?”Proverbs 21:5 (NIV): “The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.”

Nowadays, people can feel pressured to buy expensive stuff just to fit in, especially teenagers. A 2021 analysis in the Journal of Consumer Behavior discovered that parents, friends, and media can influence a person’s buying behavior. This influence can increase the demand for popular products and lead teenagers/people to spend money on things they do not really need just to feel accepted by others. However, just because a product is popular does not mean we have to buy it. Instead of wasting money to follow trends, we should learn how to manage our money wisely and focus on what is truly important.Pressure

Some wants may be useful, such as select clothing and variaties of food, but despite that, needs are still much more important. Scientific and socioeconomic researchers have proven many times that families that prioritize necessities over wants have a significantly more stable psychological health and familial bond compared to those who prioritize wants. Psychological research also proves the positive impact on children when they are raised in an environment that focuses on needs. Food, water, clothes, and a roof above ones head is necessary for survival, unlike wants that usually only offer a small impact, and with many researches and experiments already proving the importance of necessity, it should be the mold or better yet the standard for a healthy family and lifestyle.

We should learn to spend our money wisely by choosing to prioritize our needs first before buying our wants. Before we buy something we should first ask ourselves if we need the thing we are buying or it is just something we want. We should start practicing budgeting and saving our money. We need to learn how to have better responsible financial decision making when it comes to buying things if we need it or we just want it. We should always remember that we need to prioritize our needs first before things that we want. Wants may help us be happy, but needs help us on what we truly need and to have a better future.reflection: Sam : Through this pt, I learned that we should buy the things we need before the things we want. Sometimes, we want to buy expensive things just because other people have them, but we should know how to control ourselves. I realized that saving money is important because we might need it for something more important in the future. This project taught me to think carefully before spending my money. From now on, I will try to make better choices and be more responsible with how I use my money. rees:e: While working on and completing this project, I, and surely my groupmates, have learned about the importance of prioritizing needs over wants. This project has taught me the impacts, both negative and positive, of using money for things we don't need. The process of this projects creation have led me and my groupmates to understand correct budgeting and the consequences of spending too much on certain things that is not a requirement for survival. andre:
