K A N A L A - B U U R T M A K E N Derived linguistic and cultural heritage of the Cape Malay community, Kanala-Buurtmaken translates to the "neighborhood making" through shared resources, and collective support (Kanala meaning "please" or "to do a favor for the collective good"). Spatial features and function speak to community engagement and assistance in areas such as the cooking classes. We then bring a new light to the word ‘Kanala‘ into a negotiation within structural community boundaries between public and private life responsibilities.
