TEACHER’S CORNER UNSUNG HERO Karimul Haque ("Bike-Ambulance-Dada") Karimul Haque is a humble tea garden worker from the Dhalabari village in Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, who became a lifeline for thousands of villagers. The Tragedy: In 1995, Karimul lost his mother to a heart attack because no ambulance could reach their remote West Bengal village in time. Devastated, he vowed to prevent anyone else from dying due to a lack of transport. The Breakthrough: When a coworker collapsed in the tea fields, Karimul tied the unconscious man to his back on a motorcycle and rushed him to the hospital. Saving his friend's life proved that bikes could navigate rough village roads far faster than regular ambulances. The Mission: He converted his motorcycle into a free 24/7 emergency service, learning basic first aid and using his own modest earnings for fuel to serve over 20 villages. Recognition: Having saved thousands of lives over two decades, he was honored with the Padma Shri in 2017.
