Telford Theatre Update The redevelopment of Telford Theatre has reached an exciting new milestone. With the demolition of the former nursery and auditorium now complete, detailed site investigations have been carried out, helping to further refine and enhance the plans for the new venue. As a result, the updated design includes a welcoming new entrance foyer and box office, larger community and rehearsal spaces, expanded bar facilities, and additional toilets, creating an even better experience for visitors, performers and community groups alike. The multi-million-pound project will see the ageing 1960s theatre fully demolished and replaced with a modern, purpose-built venue. New facilities will include a 766-seat main auditorium, a flexible studio theatre for community groups and smaller performances, a community room, upgraded dining and bar areas and modernised backstage facilities. Preparatory work is continuing, including the planned relocation of the electricity substation currently located on the site. A contractor has also been appointed and is ready to begin construction once the revised plans receive final approval. Community Governance Review Update Following the Community Governance Review, changes to Town and Parish Council boundaries will take effect from 1 April 2027. These changes will create the new Greater Oakengates Town Council, bringing communities together and strengthening local representation for residents across the area. This summer, families enjoyed the popular Summer Trail events along Market Street and New Street, bringing creativity and colour to our streets, as well as our well-supported Armed Forces event, where we came together to honour and show appreciation for those who serve. Our Seniors Summer outing this year to Llandudno gave residents a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day by the seaside with friends and neighbours. Throughout the school holidays, children had the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of activities, from circus performances and sports sessions to arts, crafts and educational workshops. These events are only possible because of your continued involvement and helps to strengthen our community spirit. Temporary improvements have also been made in the surrounding Theatre Quarter, helping support local businesses and residents while wider regeneration works continue. Businesses in Oakengates remain open throughout the redevelopment and residents are encouraged to continue shopping locally and supporting retailers. This year’s commemorations will begin with a parade setting off from the Salvation Army Citadel at 10:35am and concluding at Hartshill Park. The parade will be followed by an outdoor service in Hartshill Park. Christmas Party Wednesday 23 December 12 noon to 2:30pm Award-winning Non-Stop Kids will bring festive fun to The Wakes with a comedy magic show, Christmas-themed party games and a mini disco, keeping children entertained throughout the afternoon. Christmas Panto Saturday 12 December 11am to 12 noon Enjoy a festive performance of Jack and the Beanstalk by Northeast Producers at The Wakes. Filled with laughter, audience participation and pantomime magic - it's fun for all ages! Stay afterwards for a short 10- minute carol service to get into the Christmas spirit. Christmas Lights Switch On Saturday 28 November 2pm to 7pm There will be plenty to see and do, including festive market stalls, live music, carol singing, a special visit from Santa and a range of free family activities. Join the community to celebrate the start of the Christmas season as the town's Christmas lights are switched on in a wonderful festive atmosphere. Everyone is invited to attend and show their support. Let us stand together in gratitude and remembrance.
Residents are invited to join the Mayor of Oakengates, Councillor Stephen Reynolds, for a special Mayor’s Charity Curry Evening at Bangla Pride, 69 Market Street, Oakengates. Guests should arrive from 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets are £25 per person and include a starter, main course, rice and naan bread. The evening will also feature a raffle and quiz, with all proceeds supporting the Lingen Davies Sunflower Appeal. Senior Social Our weekly programme of Senior Social activities continues throughout October, November and December, offering people aged 50 and over the chance to socialise, make new friends and enjoy a range of activities. Highlights include live entertainment, bingo, indoor curling, a film afternoon, quizzes, seasonal wreath making and festive lunches with entertainment to round off the year. Each session includes a light lunch and tea or coffee. Tickets for our events and activities can be booked or purchased at The Wakes on Mondays and Fridays (10am to 2pm) and Thursdays (12.30pm to 1pm).
