PORTFOLIO LAINA XYRELL T. CABUTAJE MARINA BALANZA: VISION Marina Balanza Beach Resort draws inspiration from the unique features of echinoderms, particularly their radial symmetry, by designing the pools and landscape layout with different wings extending outward from a central point. This concept not only provides stunning views for guests but also maximizes natural light and ventilation throughout the resort. Beyond its architectural form, the design integrates echinoderm functions through sustainable practices, such as water management systems inspired by their ability to filter seawater for efficient water use and conservation, while the landscaping reflects their role in stabilizing sediments to help prevent beachfront erosion. Local materials and construction techniques are incorporated to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings and honor the area's cultural heritage. Just as echinoderms contribute to marine biodiversity and their extinction would disrupt other forms of life, Marina Balanza aims to create a positive impact on its surroundings by supporting the environment, the local community, and sustainable tourism. Through integrating echinoderm-inspired functions with innovative architecture and local culture, the resort becomes a sustainable and environmentally conscious destination that celebrates both nature and tradition.

CABUTAJE MARINA BALANZA: SITE LOCATION: SITE AREA: Catarman, Liloan, Cebu 15.1 hectares Catarman is a barangay in Liloan, Cebu, with a population of 20,162 based on the 2020 Census, representing 13.16% of the municipality's total population. The site has a southwest-facing frontage. It receives the cool Northeast Monsoon (Hanging Amihan) from the northeast and the warm Southeast Monsoon (Hanging Habagat) from the opposite side during the summer season. The sun rises on the right side of the site and sets on the left. Bamboo as a building material is used for the construction of scaffolding, bridges and structures, houses. Following are the different works involved with use of bamboo: Splitting, Shaping, Bending Bamboo as a Building Material Utilization of Bamboo for construction is achieved by a structural frame technique which is related to same approach applied in usual timber frame design and construction.
The administration building features a modern tropical contemporary design that creates a welcoming and professional atmosphere. Warm wood finishes, natural stone textures, and biophilic elements, such as the living green wall, promote comfort and a strong connection to nature. Integrating open spaces in high-rise buildings is crucial for promoting healthier, more sustainable, and socially engaging urban environments. These spaces improve air quality, provide thermal comfort, and reduce urban heat island effects by incorporating greenery DOUBLE SKIN FACADEFACADE DETAIL OPEN SPACE A double-skin façade consists of two layers of glass separated by an air cavity, which acts as a thermal buffer and allows for natural ventilation. This design reduces energy consumption by minimizing heating and cooling demands. GREEN ROOF Green roofs reduce the urban heat island effect by lowering roof surface temperatures and cooling the surrounding air through evapotranspiration. This helps reduce the building's energy consumption, as green roofs act as natural insulators, minimizing the need for air conditioning in hot climates and heating during cooler seasons.INITIAL FORM The strategic use of addition and subtraction can also address environmental concerns by creating sheltered or exposed areas and optimizing the building's interaction with its surroundings. SUBTRACTIVEADDITIVE FORM CONCEPT STRUCTURAL CONCEPT The structural concept involves designing the core wall to act as a vertical cantilever beam, fixed at the foundation and free at the top. Its strength and stiffness are paramount in transferring lateral forces down to the foundation. In this proposed high rise building of clothing and apparel headquarters, the design of the core wall also incorporate specific functional requirements. HOSPITAL EXTERIOR PERSPECTIVE The design is inspired by the natural slopes of the mountains, reflected in the hospital's façade to create a distinctive architectural identity. The façade features the letter "M", representing Mamburao Community Care Hospital and symbolizing Modernity, Medical Excellence, and community commitment. The upper peaks of the "M" are shaped after the Tamaraw's horns, expressing the strength, resilience, and pride of Occidental Mindoro.

CABUTAJE BUKLOD PERFORMING ARTS CENTER DESIGN CONCEPTCLIMATE-RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURENEO-VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE The Buklod Performing Arts Center aims to support local performers and artists by providing a space where they can freely express their talents while strengthening community ties through cultural and artistic engagement. This project explores the establishment of a dedicated performing arts facility to create an efficient, supportive environment for rehearsals, performances, and artistic development. It draws inspiration from the local traditions and cultural identity of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro, while integrating contemporary construction methods and spatial planning. The design reflects local traditions by translating familiar forms, spatial qualities, and material expressions into a modern architectural language Climate-responsive design is primarily expressed in the main lobby, which serves as a transitional space between the administrative areas and the auditorium on each side of the plan. This central space is designed to maximize natural ventilation, allowing air to flow freely across the building while reducing heat buildup. FORM CONCEPT “Resonance of the Gitgit” The design concept is inspired by the Gitgit, a traditional string instrument associated with the Hanunuo Mangyan of Mindoro Island. Bonded Acoustical Cotton (B.A.C) reduces noise, and acoustical glass minimizes sound while letting light in.
