CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 7 Today we welcome to the Dunmow Group Community Stadium the players, officials and supporters of Truro City for our first home game of the 2026-2027 season. We hope that they have a pleasant stay with us and a safe return to Cornwall later this evening. A solitary goal after 16 seconds from Tony Butcher saw City travel home having won both points. CHELMSFORD CITY FC Looking back at games played on 15th August in the Club’s history, and there are only five of them, the first was in 1970 when City travelled to Worcester. A solitary goal after 16 seconds from Tony Butcher saw City travel home having won both points. It was the first competitive game following the so called ‘merger’ with Brentwood Town. A hat-trick from centre half John Devine was enough to earn City a point against Gosport Borough in 1981, the game ending 3-3. A crowd of 349 saw what was the opening league game of the 1981-1982 season. It was 2009 before another game was played on 15th August. City travelled to Basingstoke Town and were beaten 2-1. City had gone ahead through David Rainford after fourteen minutes but were unable to hold on. An outstanding display by Mark Hawkes side in 2015 saw City win 4-0 against Hayes and Yeading United. It was City’s first home league win since February with goals from Marvel Ekpiteta, Luke Daley, Billy Bricknell and an own goal securing the points. In 2013 City travelled to Welling United winning 2-1. City had Frankie Terry sent off after 80 minutes when the score was 1-1, with the winner coming in the ninth minute of time added on. It's fantastic to be back together after what has been a busy and productive summer at the club. A lot of work has taken place behind the scenes during the off-season to improve both the matchday experience and our facilities. Supporters will have noticed that the hammer net has been relocated, allowing us to increase the size of the playing surface. Alongside that, we've installed a brand-new irrigation system on the pitch, which has already proved invaluable given the warm and dry conditions we've experienced this summer. We've also moved the dugouts to the far side of the pitch. This may seem like a small change, but it will significantly improve sightlines and ensure supporters have a clearer view of the action throughout the season. Off the field, we've continued to strengthen our team. I'm delighted to welcome Ed Groves as our new Media Executive, who has already made a positive impact on our communications and content. We've also welcomed Alex Elby as our new Strength & Conditioning Coach, while Dan Robson's role as Analyst has been made permanent. Dan will continue his excellent work with the first team while also supporting Louis and the academy programme as it develops. MARK COOPER MANAGER’S NOTES I’m really looking forward to managing my first competitive league game here at home. Since arriving at the club, I’ve spoken a lot about the ambition we have and what we want to achieve together, so it will be great to walk out in front of our own supporters for the first time this afternoon. Hopefully we can make it an enjoyable day and give you a performance to get behind. There were plenty of positives to take from our opening game at Hemel Hempstead. Of course, the overriding feeling afterwards was frustration. When you’re 1-0 up that late in a game, we have to find a way to see it out and take all three points. That ruthlessness is something we need to develop because if you want to win titles and promotions, you have to come through those difficult moments. But I saw enough to be encouraged. There were some really promising spells and, when we got the ball down and played, we showed the quality we have. Our goal was a perfect example of that. We put together a good passage of play, got Manny in behind and Rhys finished the move. We have quality in this group and, as we continue to get games into the players, I’m confident there is plenty more to come from us. There was certainly no questioning the effort from the players at Hemel, and as we spend more time playing and working together, I’m confident that spirit will continue to grow. I also have to mention the support we received. I thought you were fantastic. The following was brilliant, you were loud throughout and the players certainly appreciated having you behind them. I want us as a group to make sure we show our appreciation for that support both before and after games. I also want to explain why I didn’t get the opportunity to come over and applaud you afterwards. The emotion of conceding an equaliser in the 99th minute, coupled with the frustration surrounding the timekeeping, meant there was understandably a lot of anger around our camp. My priority in that moment was making sure nobody from our side got themselves into any disciplinary trouble with the officials. It certainly wasn’t a reflection of how much your support meant to us, and I’ll make sure I come over and show my appreciation today, whatever the result. I said before the season that our supporters have every right to be optimistic. This is a football club that wants to compete at a higher level and everybody knows the ambition we have. There will inevitably be difficult moments along the way, but my responsibility is to make sure you see a group of players who are committed, have a real go and give everything they’ve got every time they represent Chelmsford City. Our attention now turns to Truro City and another tough test this afternoon. They come into the game having dropped down from the National League and started their season with a convincing victory, so we know the quality they possess. They also have an excellent manager, in John Askey, who is one of the few in this division who knows what it takes to win the National League South, so we know exactly how difficult a challenge they will provide. But we’re at home, in front of our supporters, and we’ll be ready for it. We’ll keep working, keep improving and keep building. Their homecoming proved to be a memorable one, as the Tinners won the National League South title in their first season at the new Truro City Stadium, becoming the first Cornish club to reach the National League. Truro City endured a difficult first season in the National League, finishing bottom of the division and suffering relegation back to the National League South. Despite their struggles, the Tinners made history as the first Cornish club to compete at Step One and transitioned to full-time professional football, a status they have retained following relegation. Their manager John Askey brings plenty of experience to the dugout, having taken charge of over 700 matches during a managerial career spanning more than two decades. The 61-year-old previously enjoyed considerable success with Macclesfield Town, guiding them to the National League title in 2017/18, and has also managed the likes of Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale, York City and Hartlepool United. 16 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME TYLER HARVEY WILL DEAN CONNOR RILEY-LOWE Harvey joined Truro City in 2017 after coming through Plymouth Argyle’s academy, making 50 appearances for the Pilgrims before moving to Wrexham. After scoring 25 goals during his first spell with the Tinners, he briefly joined Bath City in 2019 before returning to Truro just two months later. The forward has been prolific ever since and enjoyed a standout 2024/25 campaign, scoring 27 times as Truro won promotion while claiming both the National League South Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards. Harvey has already opened his account this season, scoring in the 2-0 opening-day victory over Maidenhead United. Dean joined Truro permanently in 2021 after progressing through Exeter City’s academy, having previously impressed on loan with the Tinners during the 2019/20 season. Capable of playing in both midfield and defence, he has since become a mainstay of the side and featured in their title-clinching victory over St Albans City in 2025. Dean has already made his mark this season, scoring in Truro’s 2-0 opening-day victory over Maidenhead United. Club captain Riley-Lowe began his career with Exeter City before initially joining Truro on loan and later making the move permanent in 2017. After two Player of the Year-winning campaigns, he briefly left for Bath City in 2019 before returning a year later. Riley-Lowe has since won the award twice more and scored the winning goal in Truro’s 2023 play-off final victory over Bracknell Town. The quickest route shown stretches 336 miles from Truro City Stadium to Chelmsford, taking you through the South West, past Bristol and Reading before negotiating the small matter of the M25 and heading into Essex. The upside: You're in charge of the music, the service-station stops and, most importantly, when you leave. The downside: More than six hours behind the wheel before you've even watched a ball being kicked. The hazard: The M25. Enough said. THE GREAT BRITISH RAIL ADVENTURE Time: Around 6 hours 19 minutes Almost seven hours of trains separate Truro and Chelmsford. The journey takes you from Cornwall towards London before crossing the capital and completing the final leg into Essex. The upside: Sit back, relax and let somebody else do the driving. You can even watch almost the entire south of England pass your window. The downside: Nearly seven hours of trains, connections & carrying everything you need for an away day. The hazard: Hearing the dreaded words: "We are sorry to announce..." THE SUPPORTERS' COACH Distance: 300+ miles Time: Around 6½ hours – traffic permitting! The quintessential football away day. Leave Truro at a time of the morning usually reserved for bakers, airport departures and people questioning their life choices, before settling in for more than six hours on the road to Essex. The upside: No worrying about connections or navigating the route yourself – just get on the coach and enjoy the journey with your fellow supporters. The downside: Six-plus hours on a coach becomes considerably longer if the result doesn't go your way. 18 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME Following a competitive pre- season period throughout the Summer, Mark Cooper’s side arrived in Hertfordshire looking to begin the campaign on a positive note against a Hemel Hempstead side equally eager to make a strong start to the new National League South season. Cooper’s first competitive team selection of the campaign included debuts for two of the club’s summer additions, with new goalkeeper Alfie Marriott starting between the posts following his loan arrival from Championship side Watford, while Manny Egbo marked his return to Chelmsford City colours after rejoining the club ahead of the new season. Harry Barbrook, Ben Tompkins, Nathan Ralph, Ricky Holmes, Rhys Browne, captain Cav Miley, Adam May, Denzelle Olopade and experienced frontman Lyle Taylor all featured alongside these new signings from the start as City looked to begin the campaign with three points on the road. CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 19 City looked on course to begin the new season with all three points after Rhys Browne’s first-half strike gave the Clarets a deserved lead at the Focus Community Arena. However, after producing a disciplined defensive display throughout much of the contest, a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from the hosts ensured the points were shared on the opening day of the National League South campaign. Manny Egbo began to cause problems for the Tudors down the right flank and produced City’s next opening after 14 minutes. The returning Claret burst forward on the overlap before delivering a dangerous cross towards Lyle Taylor, only for the Hemel goalkeeper to react quickly and gather the ball. A moment of quality from debutant goalkeeper Alfie Marriott then sparked City’s best chance of the half up to that point. The Watford loanee’s excellent distribution picked out Harry Barbrook high up the left wing, allowing the defender to drive forward and deliver a cross towards Rhys Browne at the back post. Browne met the delivery with a header, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the target. Egbo remained one of City’s brightest attacking outlets and nearly played a decisive role again six minutes later. The defender surged into the penalty area before combining neatly with Taylor, who laid the ball back into his path, but Egbo’s resulting effort crashed into the side netting. Hemel Hempstead’s best opportunity of the opening period arrived in the 42nd minute when a gap in the City defence allowed Jake Tabor to break through on goal. Rather than shooting himself, he squared the ball to Jesse Effa inside the area, but the player lost his footing at the crucial moment and was unable to capitalise on what appeared to be a golden opportunity. The hosts were made to pay just a minute later as City finally found the breakthrough. Once again it was Egbo who provided the danger, producing another excellent run down the right flank before delivering a pinpoint cross into the penalty area. Browne arrived perfectly to meet the delivery and emphatically fired beyond the goalkeeper to hand the Clarets a deserved 1-0 lead. Taylor capitalised on a loose touch from a Hemel defender before feeding Browne, who returned the favour with a dangerous cross into the box. May arrived to try and meet the delivery but could only watch as the ball flew narrowly over his head, leaving the Clarets with a 1-0 lead going into the break. The Clarets began the second half looking to build on their slender advantage and nearly doubled their lead eight minutes after the restart following a remarkable sequence that started inside their own penalty area. After City successfully dealt with a dangerous Hemel Hempstead free-kick, Ricky Holmes produced an outstanding clearance that travelled towards Taylor on the halfway line. The experienced forward brought the ball under control with a clever first touch before directing it into the path of the advancing Browne. Browne drove purposefully towards the Tudors’ penalty area before firing narrowly wide of the left-hand post. Taylor continued to play a central role in City’s attacking play and was involved again two minutes later. A neat exchange with Olopade created space for the striker, who knocked the ball down expertly before unleashing a powerful effort from distance that sailed just over the top-right corner of the goal. As the game entered the final minutes, tempers and tension began to rise. Watkiss was penalised after attempting to gain an advantage from a throw-in, before City nearly put the result beyond doubt when Kian Ronan won possession high up the pitch and burst towards goal. The substitute was brought down before he could advance any further, resulting in the first booking of the afternoon for a Hemel player. The Tudors threw everything forward in a desperate attempt to salvage a result and won a corner deep into stoppage time after a long ball from their goalkeeper was diverted behind. City successfully defended the initial delivery and the resulting second corner, which was headed over the crossbar. However, the hosts continued to apply pressure and were awarded a third consecutive corner in the ninth minute of added time. The delivery was whipped dangerously into the six-yard box, where Marriott was unable to gather cleanly under pressure, and the ball found its way into the net to level the scores in heartbreaking fashion for the Clarets. 22 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME Whilst for City fans the most interesting points of the summer revolved around a mainly new management team and the signing of new players the wider football community has been soaking up the latest World Cup, including the controversial points, which in my opinion has been one of the most interesting tournaments that I can remember. What, though, of Chelmsford City’s connection with the World Cup? The current competition has seen Jude Bellingham, arguably, being England’s outstanding player. His father, Mark Bellingham, played for City between 1995 and 1996 making a total of 64 appearances and scoring 22 goals before a career in the police force took him off to the midlands and a non-League career with various clubs in that area. He is also the father of Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham. One of only two players to have played for Chelmsford City and appeared in the World Cup was Jimmy Greaves. Greaves would play one season in City’s colours, 1976-1977, ending up as top scorer with 20 goals having made 38 appearances. He was in the England squad at the 1962 Chile World Cup where England progressed past the group stages. England lost two games, 2-1 against Hungary in their opening game, and drew 0-0 with Bulgaria in their final group game. In between came a 3-1 victory against, coincidentally, Argentina with Greaves getting the final goal. Consequently they went on to meet Brazil in the Quarter Final losing 3-1. Greaves goal against Argentina turned out to be the only goal he ever scored in the World Cup finals. CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME 23 Greaves was in Alf Ramsey’s 22 man squad for the 1966 tournament, held, of course, in England. He started all three group matches where England drew 0-0 with Uruguay, then beat Mexico 2-0 and France by the same score. In the France game Greaves suffered a shin injury that required 14 stitches and Geoff Hurst took his place. Consequently he did not play in the final when England beat West Germany 4-2 to secure their only, so far, World Cup triumph. As he didn’t play in the final he did not receive a medal but in 2009 he was awarded a World Cup winner’s medal after a successful campaign to recognise non-playing squad members. Rather less well known was left back Alex Wood who played for City in the 1938-1939 season. Alexander Lochian Wood was born in Lochgelly, Scotland on 12th June 1907 with his family emigrating to the United States in 1921, with Alex becoming a United States citizen a year later. According to Paul Taylor’s Leicester City history ‘Of Fossil’s and Foxes’ he won a Scotland schoolboy cap before his family emigrated. His football club career in the United States is somewhat sketchy, but he was selected for the States 1930 World Cup squad and appeared in all three group matches before making his fourth and final appearance against Brazil on 17th August 1930. The 1930 World Cup was held in Uruguay and the United Stated opened their Group Four campaign on 13th July in Central Park, Montevideo where a crowd estimated at 10,000 saw Belgium beaten 3-0. Despite being a left back Wood is listed as playing at right back. The United States used a peculiar system of three up front and the rest in defence, but it obviously worked! Just four days later, at the same venue, the States beat Paraguay 3-0 with the crowd estimated at 800. This time they played a short passing game which seems to have surprised the Paraguayans. Wood is again listed as playing at right back. With only three teams in the group the United States finished top of the group qualifying for the semi-final where they would meet Argentina. The game was played at the Centenary Stadium, Montevideo in front of 80,000 fans. Argentina won 6-1 but the States team suffered some misfortune. Centre Half Raphael Tracy had his leg broken after only ten minutes and by the end of the first half goalkeeper Jim Douglas was a near cripple. In addition Left Half Andy Auld suffered a severe mouth injury following a kick in the face. Ian Morrison’s ‘The World Cup – A Complete Record’ summed it up thus; ‘The rough tactics of the Argentinians had reduced the US side to a team of walking wounded.’ Wood again played at right back in this game. Quite why Alex returned to Britain is unknown but we can surmise that it was to further his football career and his first stop in England was at Leicester City. He made his debut for the Foxes on 30th March 1933 helping Leicester to a 3-0 home win against Blackpool. He played in all the last nine of Leicester’s league games but he found it difficult to gain a regular place in the side, who were, at the time, playing in the First Division. Leicester were relegated in 1934-1935 and in Wood’s final season, 1935- 1936, he made just 7 appearances in the Second Division. During his time at Leicester he was known by the popular Scottish short name for Alexander, Sandy. In all he made 57 appearances for Leicester helping them to the 1934 F.A. Cup semi-final where they were beaten by Portsmouth, ironically at St. Andrews, Birmingham. In the summer of 1936 he was transferred to fellow Second Division side Nottingham Forest for £750, making his debut in a 3-0 defeat at Burnley on the opening day of the season. He spent just one season at the City Ground making 22 appearances as Forest finished eighteenth in the Second Division. He moved into non-League football in 1937-1938 signing for newly formed professional side Colchester United. He made 35 appearances for United as they finished sixth in the Southern League. Confusingly Hal Mason’s Colchester history ‘The Official History of the U’s’ has him playing in goal! Manager Billy Walker brought him to New Writtle Street as City embarked on their inaugural season. Just three seasons earlier he had been playing top flight football, so it was quite a good signing. He would make 43 appearances that season for City scoring three goals and was a part of the side that made the historic run to the F.A. Cup Fourth Round before losing 6-0 to Birmingham at St. Andrews. He returned to the United States to go back to his family in Gary, Indiana and presumably as he was only 31 years of age continued playing football. 4 4 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME Lyle, after a great season last year, you signed a new deal with the club this summer. How pleased were you to extend your time here? “Yeah, very pleased. It was more of a formality than anything else. There was no point at the back end of last season that I didn’t think I would be here.” What was your favourite memory from last season? “We had a few good ones. I scored some great goals, we had some good times here, the Braintree game and the FA Cup run were good. But I think we underachieved, so we have to make better memories this year by achieving.” There are obviously plenty of new faces this season, including the manager. What’s it been like working with everyone so far? “It’s been good. When probably two- thirds of the squad are new players, there’s a lot of work to do in terms of getting to know people, how they play and their characters. “We’re not 100% yet, but we’re in a decent place and have a decent understanding of what we have to do. The job is to build on that and see how far we can take it.” Our first game of the season ended in a 1-1 draw. What did you make of the game? “We should have won the game. I think the less said about the officiating, the better.” Looking ahead to Truro on Saturday, we’re back in front of the home crowd. How excited are you to get back out in front of the home fans? “Being at home is one of the most important things in a football season, and starting well at home is important. GK — DEAN HENDERSON Lyle played alongside Henderson during their time together at Charlton Athletic. The England international has since established himself in the Premier League and was a key part of the Crystal Palace side that won the FA Cup in 2025, the club’s first major trophy. CM — JOE ARIBO Aribo and Lyle were teammates at Charlton, including during the club’s promotion-winning 2018/19 campaign. The Nigeria international later won silverware with Rangers before joining Southampton, and spent part of last season on loan at Leicester City. ST — HARRY KANE Lyle faced Kane when AFC Wimbledon took on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup in 2018, with Kane scoring twice. The England captain and all time top goal scorer went on to score 213 Premier League goals for Spurs, leaving him second on the competition’s all- time scoring list behind Alan Shearer. Since moving to Bayern Munich, Kane has continued his remarkable goalscoring record and has now won back-to-back Bundesliga titles, including the 2025/26 crown. He scored 36 league goals last season to finish as the Bundesliga’s top scorer for a third consecutive season, while also helping Bayern complete the domestic double by scoring a hat-trick in the DFB Cup final. CM — JOSH CULLEN Another of Lyle’s former Charlton teammates, Cullen played alongside him during the Addicks’ promotion-winning 2018/19 campaign. The Republic of Ireland international has since established himself at Burnley, where he has also captained the side. CB — VIRGIL VAN DIJK Lyle came up against Van Dijk during his time playing in Scotland, before the Dutch defender developed into one of the world’s leading centre-backs. Van Dijk has since captained both Liverpool and the Netherlands, winning major honours including the Premier League and Champions League. 50 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME CHELMSFORD CITY FC WOMEN SEASON READY With pre-season almost complete and the new campaign just around the corner, we caught up with Women’s Manager Simon Horne and First Team Coach Jay Blackie to discuss preparations, the squad and their ambitions for 2026/27. How has pre-season been so far? Simon Horne: It’s been a good pre-season. We haven’t lost anybody from last season and we’ve had some good additions, including some younger players. We’ve had a good chance to work on things and it’s set us up nicely for when we get going for real. Jay Blackie: The trialists have really pushed the players already here, which has created healthy competition for places. We’ve challenged ourselves against higher-level opposition and also given reserve players opportunities, so it’s been really positive. How excited are you for the new season? Simon Horne: I’m really excited. The landscape of women’s football is changing and we need to move alongside that. We want to do right by the players we have now while also building for those coming through in the future. Jay Blackie: We’re really excited to get going. You enjoy having a little break, but then you get that fever for football again. We know the opening game at Wormley will be tough, but we’re ready to go and compete. After finishing runners-up last season, how much motivation is there to go one better? Simon Horne: We’ve been runners-up two seasons on the bounce now, having won the title before that, so the motivation is definitely there. Jay Blackie: Absolutely. There were games last season where we didn’t get the results we wanted through our own doing, while injuries also had an impact. Our goal is to try and win the league and we’ll go into every game with that intention. Are you confident this could be the year? Simon Horne: We’re as confident as we always are. With no disrespect to anybody else, there’s nobody in the league that scares us. We know we can give a good showing of ourselves. Jay Blackie: The league will be stronger this year, but we’re not afraid to play anybody. On our day, I believe we can be the strongest team. The goal is there to be reached. 52 CHELMSFORD CITY FC MATCHDAY PROGRAMME CHELMSFORD CITY FC ACADEMY We are currently three-quarters of the way through our academy pre-season ahead of the league campaign starting in September. Overall, I’m really excited to coach this new group and help them improve both on and off the pitch. We’re looking forward to September and hopefully emulating the successes of recent years! Our new first years have been training alongside the soon-to-be second years, with the squad beginning to come together ahead of our return to Moulsham High School. JSo far, we have completed three training sessions, including two testing days and a full tactical, technical and physical session. We also faced Southend United in a friendly, giving the players some valuable early match minutes. We have two more training sessions and a final pre-season fixture against Heybridge Swifts U18s EJA before starting our league campaign at home to King’s Lynn Town. The boys are looking in good shape and, with time, coaching and cohesion, we are hopeful of building another strong squad as we prepare for a larger and extremely competitive U19 National League Youth Alliance this season. We have already seen more academy success stories, with Alex Protsenko, Sam Black, Will Mitchell, Hugo Young and Dashen Gyami all featuring for the first team during pre-season, while Will Meek, Oscar Bear and Noah Morena have taken part in multiple first-team training sessions.
