The Fluttering Sailor

Deep down in the ocean, where the coral glowed pink and purple, lived a little seahorse named Nalu. She was the best at holding on tight.

Nalu watched the fast fish zoom by —flash!—and the speedy crabs scuttle—clack!—and the silly jellyfish drift far away— wobble!

"Oh, I wish I could go on a grand adventure," Nalu sighed to her friend, Asteri the starfish. "But I'm just too slow. I can only flutter."

Asteri, who moved at a pace slower than slow, lifted one of her arms gently. "You are not too slow, little Nalu. You move just the way a seahorse is meant to move."

Nalu twirled her tail off the coral and began to swim. Fwoosh- fwoosh, fwoosh- fwoosh. She wobbled and bobbed a little bit as she moved.

"See?" Nalu said. "The fast fish use their big tails to push. But me? I use this tiny little fin on my back! It’s called a dorsal fin, and it just gets me wiggling."

Asteri smiled her starfish smile. "That little fin, and your tiny fins by your cheeks, are what make you a perfect sailor! You glide, little friend. You don't rush."

Nalu thought about this. She stopped trying to rush and just let the water move her, keeping her little dorsal fin fluttering just enough to steer.

She steered past a singing clam and around a garden of soft anemones. Because she was moving so slowly, Nalu saw tiny, sparkling grains of sand that the fast fish always missed.

Nalu realized that her slow, careful journey was a grand adventure after all. And she was the perfect, fluttering sailor to enjoy it.

The End.The End.
