The year was 1898. America was poised to enter a period of change and growth never before imagined. The automobile was soon to become commonplace; the airplane was yet to be invented. The Oil Boom hit the Marietta area in the second half of the 19th century and there quickly became a need to supply the growing industry. As existing oil wells dried up or became unprofitable, it was common place for operators to leave behind their used equipment and buy new at the next well because of the labor and cost of moving it. This created an opportunity for enterprising individuals to collect, resell, or scrap the discarded items. American Iron & Supply was born as a new and second-hand Oil Well Supply House by two Brothers-in-law, David Rabinowitz (later D.R. Travis) & Herman Appleman. Wildcatters coming to the area to drill exploratory wells could buy used equipment, operators could buy new equipment for producing wells, and anything that could not be sold as used could be scrapped. After the great flood of 1913, the men decided to sell and move west to Tulsa, OK.They sold to a hardworking entrepreneur named Louis Goldish. He would rename the company American Supply Co, drop the used & scrap side of the business, and reform it into American Iron & Metal Co; which his brother Abraham would operate. Louis would continue to sell oil well supplies, but also saw a need to expand to industrial & manufacturing offerings. He grew the company, relocating several times as needed, surviving the Great Depression and two World Wars.THE APS STORYCENTRIES OF PARTNERSHIPS:CENTRIES OF PARTNERSHIPS:Circa 19145Background Picture: 1920
GROWTH & CHANGE 1963 - 1994GROWTH & CHANGE 1963 - 1994In 1963 Rankin Brunton, a forward-thinking businessman, purchased American Supply Co. The local industrial base and the resulting construction was rapidly expanding within the region. Mr. Brunton recognized this and guided the company in this direction. The company grew following the guidelines he established: "Provide the highest quality product at a fair price with the highest level of service possible." The company's new focus on servicing the industrial and construction markets required a more comprehensive product offering. To fulfill their customers' requirements, new product lines were aggressively added, and Producers Industrial Supply was purchased in 1973. The company was renamed American Producers Supply in 1974 and combined into its present location Second Street in 1976. American Producers entered the electrical supply business in 1984 with the purchase of Sprague Electric, a long-established Marietta firm. The company then purchased the assets of Crescent Supply, a plumbing and hardware business, in 1987. Sprague Electric and Crescent Supply were combined into one location as Crescent Sprague Supply. In 1994, Rankin would hand the reigns to the next generation, selling Crescent Sprague to son Bruce, and American Producers to son Chris.
