COURTYARD VIEWPROGRAM PLANThe structures share three common spaces, intended to create community within the units. A private courtyard is located between the structures, featuring a patio, botanical landscaping, and a lumber playset. A gathering and kitchen space is located in the west multi-family unit. A fitness center is located in the east multi-family unit. 2026 TIMBER IN THE CITY01 Sustainable Residential Design to reimagine the boundaries of wood construction in the urban environment using renewable timber systems to create sustainable buildings that incorporate both traditional and advanced wood technologies and promote healthy, well‑designed living environments. FORM, FUNCTION, AND PRESENTATION 02F L O O R 1F L O O R 2F L O O R 3 This project aims to create a composition of forms by combining and cutting three geometric volumes: a cylinder, a cube, and a rectangular prism of any size or orientation, while keeping in mind Gestalt’s Principles. Then, design the interior and exterior as if it were your dream house. The process began by organizing the volumes objectively, without thinking of them as a house. Using Gestalt’s Principle of common fate, each volume has an edge/circumference of 3", 6", or 12". This exponential growth creates balance and aligns the volumes cohesively with intentionality.

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT PRECEDENTS 04This project aimed to design an ADU in the historic district of Brookings, SD. These homes are generally on large lots with lots of yard space that can be utilized for density, without tearing down the historic homes. The attached ADU design is inspired by English conservatories. They have beautiful, large windows that work as an addition to a home, while enhancing charm and preserving historical aesthetic. The conservatory windows allow large amounts of natural sunlight to light up the space.
This project aims to design a landmark to serve as a gateway to Brookings City. This landmark should embody a concept that captures one or more defining features of Brookings. BROOKINGS CITY GATEWAY05 This design embodies Brookings’s slogan, “bring your dreams.” Being a college town with a growing population and infrastructure, Brookings should have a landmark reflecting this idea. CONCEPTS The orientation of the project allows those entering on 6th Street to see the brass sun and feel interest, joy, and opportunity.
