SAIL-BSP started the sole English Medium School in the region in association with DAV College Management, which started at Antagarh in September 2015, exclusively for tribal children from 22 Mines Buffer Zone villages of the Rowghat area. The school opened with 60 children from the buffer zone villages of Rowghat area in Kanker and Narayanpur. All the students are provided free education, breakfast, milk, lunch, and dresses, shoes, socks, stationary, utility kit, and free transportation facilities f ro m t h e i r v i l l a g e t o s c h o o l . P re s e n t l y 2 6 5 s t u d e n t s a re p u r s u i n g f re e e d u c a t i o n f ro m C l a s s 1 t o 4 . This initiative of Mines' CSR has been recognised with the TIMES CSR Award in 2019. Since 2009, BSP has been supporting the government's mid-day meal scheme by providing financial support to Akshaya Patra Foundation (APF) for providing mid-day meals to 25000 children in 176 government schools in the Bhilai-Durg area. Presently, the mid-day meal scheme by APF is being run from a building provided, complete with all kitchen facilities and vehicles for transportation, as per the MoU. SUPPORT FOR MID DAY MEAL SCHEME
Bhilai Steel Plant, in association with 'Great India Talent Foundation', runs two English Medium CBSE primary schools under its CSR scheme to provide state of art education facilities to children from economically backward sections of society without any financial burden on their families. BSP is providing school uniforms, books, stationery, mid-day meal and to & fro transport facility, besides free education facilities at these two Bhilai Ispat Vikas Vidyalaya, including one for children from slum areas outside the township area, at Khursipar. A senior citizen home – Bhilai Ispat Siyan Sadan was set up April 2010. All 20 accommodation units are presently occupied. One kitchen, Dining hall, Multipurpose Hall, Recreation Hall and an office have been also developed. Each room has attached bathroom and is well furnished with all facilities. Food is being provided to residents through Akshaya Patra Foundation. To provide good environment, cultural programmes are arranged from time to time. All efforts are made to make Siyan Sadan a happy place to live for senior citizens. This initiative of SAIL-BSP has been recognised by the Govt of India with Vyomshreshta Samman in 2016. Bhilai Ispat Siyan Sadan Further strengthening elderly care, 20 newly constructed, fully furnished rooms at Bhilai Ispat Siyan Sadan now offer enhanced comfort and security for senior residents.
Bhilai Ispat Kalyan Chikitsalaya Medical Camps at 21 Model Steel Villages are organised regularly. One doctor is provided at Arogya Niketan at Smriti Nagar for retired employees, senior citizen and other citizens. Doctors also visit Siyan Sadan on the 1st Saturday of every month. Medical Camps Healthcare outreach remained a cornerstone of CSR efforts. At the Bhilai Ispat Kalyan Chikitsalay (BIKC), over 9,300 patients received free medical consultation during the year. Focused interventions such as Safai Mitra Health & Safety Camps, Mission Lakshmi for cervical cancer awareness, and specialised cancer screening camps in association with BALCO Medical Centre, Raipur, addressed critical health concerns, particularly among women and vulnerable communities. Mobile Vans – R K Mission An average of around 40 patients per day are seen at BIKC, a minimum of 35 patients per day at Medical Camps, and 25 patients per day at Arogya Niketan. Medical camps are held in our mines in far-flung areas from Hirri, Rajhara, to Rowghat. Around 2,00,000 patients have benefited so far.
Empowering Women, Enabling Livelihoods Skill development initiatives further extended to sewing training, distribution of sewing machines, and promotion of traditional crafts such as bamboo, godna, and dry flower art, benefiting over 150 rural women. Empowerment finds expression in action through BSP's targeted livelihood programs. A pioneering women's driving training initiative, conducted in association with the Institute of Driving and Traffic Research, Raipur, enabled 48 women to gain driving skills and licenses, opening doors to economic independence. In a remarkable step towards long-term empowerment, 22 young women from peripheral mining areas were supported in pursuing professional nursing courses, with full boarding and lodging, many of whom are now stepping into careers in reputed health care institutions. Recognising the transformative power of sports, BSP has been actively nurturing talent in tribal and rural regions. The SAIL Khel Mela at Narayanpur, supported with substantial financial assistance, has become a vibrant platform encouraging youth participation in sports and fostering discipline, teamwork, and aspiration. Sports as a Catalyst: Inspiring Aspirations Infrastructure development also received a boost with support extended for the creation of an Indoor Sports Complex for the Chhattisgarh Armed Forces, strengthening both community and institutional sporting ecosystems.
Gift Milk Initiative – BSP CSR Reaffirming its commitment to community welfare, SAIL–Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) has resumed its “Gift Milk” initiative, providing fortified flavoured milk to children in remote mining regions.Launched in April 2023 in collaboration with the NDDB Foundation for Nutrition (NFN), the programme addresses malnutrition in aspirational districts like Narayanpur and Kanker. Since its resumption on 22 September 2025, the initiative has benefited 3,349 students across 104 schools, with daily distribution of vitamin-enriched milk (200 ml) on every school day. Over time, the programme has expanded significantly, from 2,583 children in 82 schools to a wider reach of nearly 4,000 children annually, delivering approximately 7.28 lakh milk packets. A simple yet powerful step towards nourishment, health, and a better future for children in underserved communities.
