11 RIGHT TO BE STILL. In our contemporary world, there is an unspoken but powerful demand to always be productive Our lives are increasingly shaped by a culture of constant performance and efficiency, a condition that has led to a collective state of burnout and exhaustion. This relentless drive is not just a state of mind; it is physically built into our cities. Urban environments are largely designed for speed and function, with buildings and public spaces programmed to keep us moving, working, or consuming.Within this framework, there is little room for what might be the most human of needs the freedom to do nothing. Simple, purposeless acts like resting, daydreaming, or quietly observing the world are often left without a place . Stillness can feel out of place, and pausing without a reason is often undervalued. What if architecture could provide a space for this essential inaction? This project explores the idea of “anti- programmed architecture” spaces designed not for a specific function, but to support the simple act of being. To build this argument, the research will look at the concept of “doing nothing” from multiple perspectives. One will investigate the psychological benefits of rest, the philosophical value of wandering and contemplation, and the social dynamics that determine who gets to be idle in public space. Through on-the-ground observation of how people find moments of pause in a fast- paced city like Mumbai, this thesis aims to uncover a hidden need for spaces that offer refuge from the demands of productivity. It is a search for an architecture that serves not just our efficient selves, but also our tired, bored, and dreaming selves, an architecture where our presence alone is enough. ABSTRACT
12 The entire premise of this thesis began not in a studio or a library, but with a simple, tired feeling on a Sunday night during my internship. Faced with the prospect of another week, I couldn’t stop asking myself, “why do I even have to go?”. It wasn’t a question born from dissatisfaction with my work, but from a profound sense of exhaustion. In that moment, a quieter, more direct thought emerged: Why does my survival depend on this routine? And why is just existing not considered enough?.That feeling started a chain of more practical questions. Why do I feel guilty after a day of doing nothing, as if I’ve wasted it?. Who decided that we always have to be productive to deserve our place?. This thesis is my attempt to answer those questions. It is an exploration into what our world and specifically, our architecture would look like if it didn’t always expect us to be productive. We are caught in a “Productive Loop of Life” a cycle of education, work, and consumption that is designed to extract value from our time and attention, rather than return our autonomy . Definition: A “distinctive form of freedom”the “absence of guiding purposes” or external goal-directed activity (Henricks, 2022). Neurological Basis: Conscious rest is “distinct from sleep” (Psych Central, n.d.) and activates the Default Mode Network (DMN) (Raichle et al., 2001). 20 1.2.Diverse Definitions of “Just Being” The concept of “doing nothing” is not fixed; it is a subjective state that has evolved through history and is experienced differently by every generation and individual.It’s clear from the feedback that people have very different ideas about relaxation. The following activities represent people’s preferred methods of ‘non-doing,’ according to the data collected. The survey data, focusing on the 18-25 age group, reveals that “doing nothing” is not a uniform activity but a highly subjective and personal experience. Every individual has a different method for relaxation, ranging from complete solitude in nature, like a “cozy getaway near a beach” or a “tree house,” to social immersion with “friends and good beer”. Preferences also include engaging in low-pressure, solitary activities like painting or using a “colouring notebook,” as well as finding digital distraction in a “game room”. 21 shows the go-to spots for relaxation among the respondents. ‘Bed rotting’ is the most popular choice, with 51.72% selecting it, followed by ‘more closer to nature’ at 44.83%. This suggests a preference for either the comfort of personal space or the tranquility of natural settings Graph for Relaxation Activities and Spaces The need for “Calm / Peaceful” (23 responses) is overwhelmingly the dominant emotion, confirming that the primary purpose of these spots is mental and emotional restoration. What’s missing is as important as what’s present: Notice that emotions like “Excited,” “Social,” “Happy,” or “Entertained” are not on this list.This reinforces that “relaxation” is being defined in direct opposition to the high-energy, social, and commercial activities (like “go to mall”) that our public spaces are often built for. 22 1.3.Field Observations: The Search for ‘Just Being’ in the Public Realm of Mumbai To ground this research in lived experience, a series of one-hour observational studies were conducted across five distinct public and semi-public typologies in Prabhadevi , mumbai near siddhivinayak mandir. The objective was to assess whether these spaces afford an individual the opportunity for unstructured rest and revival, free from the demands of daily productivity. Each experiment revealed significant constraints that inhibit the simple act of “just being.” Observation 1: The Beachfront,Dadar Beach. Observation 2 : McDonald, Prabhadevi. Dadar Beach, a major public waterfront. Despite being heavily used by families on a weekend, the space failed to offer any opportunity for unstructured rest. Constraints - poor sanitation, strong odors, and pervasive garbage caused physical discomfort and actively inhibited revival. I was tolerated for 30 minutes, but as “rush hour” began, staff politely asked me to leave for paying customers. This confirmed that in commercial spaces, rest is a commodity, not a right. 23 Observation 3: The Public Park. Observation 4: The Politician-Sponsored Benches. An attempt was made to use public seating on a footpath. The scarcity of such amenities was immediately apparent. The only available bench was a politically-sponsored installation, suggesting its purpose was tied to a political agenda rather than genuine public service. The space was occupied exclusively by men, and my presence as a woman sitting alone was met with overt stares and a palpable sense of judgment, forcing me to leave after a short time. Observing a local ‘chai’ place, I found it to be a male-dominated space with a hostile ambient culture. Patrons watching a film with sexist dialogue created an exclusionary and uncomfortable atmosphere, forcing me to use headphones and feign another activity to justify my presence and deflect unwanted attention. Constraints: Gendered space,lack of psychological safety,social exclusion through hostile ambient culture. As a baseline, I went to a public park, a space that’s supposed to be for leisure. I was able to sit and just observe for about thirty minutes, and it felt like a temporary sanctuary where being still was socially acceptable. But even there, I felt this internal pressure, this guilt for not being ‘useful’. I was there just seeking some quietness, but that fragile feeling of peace was instantly broken by an external interruption, which just highlighted how hard it is to protect that state of non-doing. Constraints: Politicization of public amenities,perceived surveillance and social judgment, creation of a hostile and exclusionary environment. This documented gap between human need and urban reality provides the foundational basis and urgent design mandate for this thesis, directly informing its aim and objectives. 26 The primary aim of this thesis is to explore how architecture can critically respond to a world dominated by productivity. It seeks to propose the creation of spaces specifically for acts of “non-doing” such as resting, pausing, wandering, and reflecting without the associated pressure of function, purpose, or performance. What is the critical value of “doing nothing,” based on its philosophical defense as a form of freedom , its sociological status as a class privilege , and its psychological necessity for mental well-being? How are public and semi-public spaces commonly programmed for consumption and control , and how do these designs (both socially and physically) discourage or “criminalize” non-productive acts like loitering, pausing, and resting? What specific architectural principles such as non-functionality, ambiguity, slowness, and sensory engagement can be deployed to create spaces that offer “psychological permission” to be idle, free from feelings of guilt or the pressure to perform? How can this theoretical framework for an “architecture of rest” be translated into a tangible and replicable design strategy that reclaims urban space for unproductive acts and fosters a more inclusive, less anxious city?

34 This chapter moves from the social to the individual, exploring the psychological and neurological evidence that makes a compelling case for an architecture of “non- doing”. It reveals that the need for rest is not a sign of weakness but a fundamental biological necessity for a healthy, creative, and resilient mind. 2.1.1.The Paradox of Rest: Why Resting Makes Us Better Our contemporary culture suffers from a “fear of resting,” driven by the pervasive anxiety that if we pause, we will fall behind or lose productivity (Psych Central, n.d.). Psychology, however, reveals the opposite is true. True mental and emotional rest which is distinct from sleep is an intentional act of disengagement from external demands. It is a conscious “shifting from what’s external to what’s internal” (Psych Central, n.d.), allowing the mind to “turn off” its continuous processing and make space for daydreaming, reflection, and genuine creativity. The evidence for this paradox that rest enhances performance is extensive. Practices like Non-Sleep Deep Rest (NSDR) actively reduce the “fight-or-flight” response of the sympathetic nervous system while enhancing the “rest and recovery” function of the parasympathetic nervous system (Positive Psychology, 2.1.The Psychological Case for Idleness:The Brain’s Default Mode The documented benefits directly contradict the assumption that constant activity is optimal and include: 1]Stress Reduction: NSDR leads to substantial reductions in stress and anxiety by lowering levels of cortisol, a primary stress hormone (Positive Psychology, n.d.). 2]Enhanced Creativity: These practices are shown to increase alpha and theta brain waves, which are directly “associated with deep relaxation and heightened creativity” (Positive Psychology, n.d.). 3]Improved Cognitive Function: Intentional rest positively impacts brain health by improving connectivity in the brain’s default mode network, which is linked to “enhanced memory, attention, and self-referential processing” (Positive Psychology, n.d.). 4]Physiological Recovery: The benefits extend to the body, including “lower blood pressure, reduced heart rate, and improved immune system function” (Positive Psychology, n.d.). This proof that rest is vital elevates the design of “unproductive” spaces from a mere amenity to a “critical public health intervention”. In the context of “anxious cities” where “noise, spatial fragmentation, and a lack of access to green or social infrastructure” create constant mental distress spaces for idleness become “essential infrastructure for collective mental health and resilience” (Roe, 2025). 36 Neuroscience provides a concrete biological basis for “non-doing”. When our brain is not focused on a specific, external task, it does not shut down. Instead, it activates a “coordinated default mode network (DMN) a structured brain state active during rest and suppressed during external task engagement” (Raichle et al., 2001). The DMN is the brain’s “reset mode.” It proves that when we appear to be doing nothing, our brains are quietly engaged in the essential work of making sense of our experiences, processing emotions, and fostering creativity. The city is fundamentally hostile to the pedestrian, the human-scaled embodiment of non-productive movement. Failed Infrastructure: Research validates your observations by highlighting how Mumbai's streets are dominated by "vehicle-oriented urban planning" (The Quint, 2025). Hostile Environment: Footpaths are "shrinking," broken, or non- existent, forcing pedestrians to navigate chaotic traffic and making the simple act of walking a high- stress activity (ET Infra, 2025). Deadly Consequences: This hostility is not just an inconvenience; it's a danger. For years, pedestrians have accounted for over half of all road traffic fatalities in the city (Mumbai First, 2024). In this context, the flâneur cannot exist. The city's design actively enforces a productive mindset (movement as transit from A to B) and punishes a non-productive one (movement as leisure or observation). 5.1.4. The Social Construction of Rest: A Politicized and Gendered Realm Your field observations correctly identify that even when public space exists, it is not truly "public" or "restful". Access to idleness in Mumbai is dictated by class, and especially, by gender. Gendered Space: Your observation of feeling unsafe or judged as a woman sitting alone is substantiated by extensive research. Sociological studies on Mumbai confirm that a woman's right to "loiter" or simply "be" in public is severely restricted by the perceived risk of harassment and a social "reputation" to uphold (Economic & Political Weekly, 2024). Systemic Exclusion: This is reinforced by a systemic lack of infrastructure. Reports highlight a massive gender disparity in public toilets—in many wards, the ratio is one seat for women for every six for men—making a woman's simple presence in the public realm a logistical challenge (ThePrint, 2024). This proves your sociological argument: leisure is a privilege. Designing an inclusive space for "doing nothing" in Mumbai is a political act that must actively counter deep-seated social and gendered exclusion.

89 ` 5.1.5. The Opportunity: Mumbai: A Resilient ‘Lived Space Finally, Mumbai is the ideal site not just for its problems, but for its opportunities. The analysis through Lefebvre’s “Lived Space” (Sociological Reasoning, 2019) points to a crucial insight: Mumbaikars are already experts at “appropriating” (Designhub1610, n.d.) non-spaces for rest. People spontaneously occupy seawall promenades, concrete planters, shop steps (otlas), and the edges of traffic islands for moments of pause. This existing, informal behavior demonstrates a deep, unmet human need. The city’s inhabitants are already “doing nothing” in the cracks of the “productive city” Sociological Reasoning, 2019). This thesis does not need to invent a new behavior. It needs to listen to and learn from this existing “Lived Space” (Designhub1610, n.d.). The design intervention can provide an architecture that validates, shelters, and legitimizes this inherent, resilient human act of “just being” (Henricks, 2022), giving it a dedicated and dignified place in the urban fabric.
90 Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park,dadar is an ideal example of Henri Lefebvre's "Lived Space," where human experience and social use define the area, not just its design (Avid Learning, n.d.). 1]Open and Accessible: It is a 28- acre maidan (open ground), not a park enclosed by gates. 92 The two largest public green spaces in G/N ward are Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park at approximately 11.3 hectares (Shivaji Park, n.d.) and Mahim Nature Park at 15 hectares (Maharashtra Nature Park Society, n.d.). Therefore, these two parks combined account for only 2.9% of the ward's total area, placing immense pressure on them to serve a population of over 590,000 residents (Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, n.d.-a). Why is Shivaji Park an example of a good, idle public space, but can’t be ideal for the Mumbai realm? The Shivaji Park residential neighborhood is a hyper-dense enclave, with a population density of 44,618 people per km² more than double the Mumbai City average. This extreme density places immense pressure on the area's public land, revealing a critical city-wide scarcity of "idle" spaces. This data demonstrates that even though Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park is a huge 11.3-hectare chuck of land, it alone cannot digest the needs of the intense population density immediately surrounding it. The “destination” model of large parks like Shivaji Park, while socially inclusive, is a failed typology for the exhausted city. 94 5.3.The Vanishing Commons: A Case Study of Mumbai's Open Spaces and need for small intervention 5.3.1.The Context This scarcity is compounded by the reality of Mumbai's housing. For millions, "home" is a single room. Therefore, the public realm is not a luxury; it is an essential extension of the home (Citizen Matters, 2025). The statistic of 1.2 square metres of open space per person (Abraham, 2025) is not just a number; it is a critical failure against public health standards. While the World Health Organization's supposed "9 sq m" recommendation is a widely cited India's own Urban Regional Development Plans Formulation and Implementation (URDPFI) guidelines recommend a healthier 10 to 12 sq m per person (Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, 2022). !!!!Current State of Open Spaces in Mumbai (Udas-Mankikar, 2020).- 1.Jurisdiction: The BMC's development plan (415.05 sq km) does not cover the entire city (458.28 sq km). 95 5.3.2.The Philosophy: Maximum Impact from Minimal Space “In a city like Mumbai, to create large open places is challenging because of the space constraints and the dynamics of the city,” says Asif Zakaria, former BMC corporator from the H-West ward (Citizen Matters, 2025). During Asif’s tenure, the corporator’s funds were used to transform the steps on Mount Mary Road, which is often used as a thoroughfare opposite St. Stephen’s Church, into a safe and open multi- purpose space (Citizen Matters, 2025). Traffic islands, junkyards or even thoroughfares can fulfil the city’s need for open areas. Dhawal Ashar, Program Head Integrated Transport at World Resources Institute (WRI), says while citing the example of the HP Junction at the intersection of Turner Road, SV Road and Linking Road in Bandra, “Generally people’s reaction is where’s the space? But on close observation by experts, who are trained to see these things, we realised there’s a lot of it” (Citizen Matters, 2025). This model is replicable and scalable. While the city spends a decade and thousands of crores on one coastal road, a hundred of these small interventions could be executed in a year, delivering immediate benefits directly to diverse communities for a fraction of the cost.(Citizen Matters, 2025). The steps opposite St. Stephen’s Church From dump to inclusive corner The steps had turned into a garbage dump strewn with syringes as drug users and peddlers would gather there. It needed a plan, which would maintain its functional purpose while imbuing it with other uses. “We made it universally accessible. So, a wheelchair user or a child in a pram can access the space,” explains Alan Abraham of Abraham John Architects, who carried out the work on the steps. Now, the place has ramps too. There are three levels of community areas, where people gather for activities and the walls are decorated with art. Moreover, because of the buzz, drug users have stopped using it as their haunt.(Citizen Matters, 2025). These pockets, if recognised and designed well, offer multi- dimensional solutions to a space- starved city (Citizen Matters, 2025). 96 5.3.3.One Green Mile :Streetscape and Public Space Design Key Achievements - Public Space: Reclaimed 2.3 acres of public realm for pedestrian use. - Greenery: Added 130 new trees to the streetscape. New Amenities: - Created 2,000 sqm of new public space under the flyover. - Introduced five new modular and open bus stops. Human Impact: The upgrades make the daily commute easier and more comfortable for over 150,000 people per day.(StudioPOD. (n.d.)) The project was a collaboration: StudioPOD led the 1.8 km streetscape masterplan, while the Dutch firm MVRDV co-designed the 200-meter- long park, ‘Parel Baug.’ This 1.8 km ‘One Green Mile’ functions as a proof-of-concept for a much larger masterplan to revitalize the 11.22 km flyover system. It aims to set a new benchmark for reclaiming Mumbai’s underutilized infrastructure. (StudioPOD, n.d.) 101 This became the starting question of my research - how can edges become softer, more public, and inclusive? Idea My first vision was ambitious: to redesign all the idle spaces of Mumbai to imagine a future where every wall, footpath, and residual edge could be rethought as part of a public network. 2.Fixing edges - After studying Kioi Seido, I turned my attention to Mumbai a city full of “hard edges” and “dead areas.” Compound walls, blank facades, and leftover pavements dominate its public realm. These edges divide rather than connect. Kioi Seido’s restrictive access, limited hours, and detached surroundings create an exclusive rather than public atmosphere. Its lack of urban connection or civic presence turns it into an isolated architectural object admired by architects, but unused by people. 102 The Vision I imagined this transformation unfolding over the next 100– 200 years, as Mumbai undergoes citywide redevelopment. The idea drew inspiration from architects like Sameep Padora TEDtalk, who emphasize the need for new planning frameworks and DCPR reforms to redefine how the city grows. Why It Changed However, this idea remained largely speculative built on assumptions about a distant future. I wanted my thesis to act now to intervene within the existing city, using its current systems and everyday spaces. 3. New Focus: A Real Project That Can Spread across mumbai realm: The Network: City Bus Stops
103 This is how the idea will spread. The network of smaller city bus stops is what “can give and spread our idea of idleness throughout the city.” The Goal: will design a “module ideation”a system or kit of parts for interventions at the bus stop scale. The Method: This module is not a copy-paste design. It is a flexible idea that must be adapted “with respect to its context.” A module in a dense market will look different from one in a quiet residential area. 4.The Anchor: Juhu Bus Depot(thought of it emerges from my live case study ), I will focus on the Juhu Bus Depot as my main, in-depth site. The Problem: It is a large piece of “underutilized infrastructure.” Right now, it is “ruined,” and its edges are unsafe and unwelcoming. The Goal: Design will “revive that edge plot.” I will show how to turn this specific large site into a safe, inclusive, and major public space for all. Important: This depot design is not a replicable module. It is a unique, site- specific architectural solution. It is the main “test case” for my ideas.

106 ` 6.3.The Value of Preserving Depots: An Argument for Their Use as Public Sites The state government and BMC have directed BEST to stop relying on bailouts and to generate its own “non-fare revenue.” A recent directive from the Chief Minister, for example, ordered BEST to ensure 40% of its revenue comes from non-fare sources (Deshpande, 2025) The official policy is to “monetize” this land. This involves leasing it to a private developer who, in exchange for building a new, smaller bus station, can use the remaining land to build and sell luxury towers for a massive profit (Pinto, 2025). The bus service is facing enormous financial losses, projecting a deficit of over 2,000 crore for the 2025- 26 budget (Mehta, 2025). public land in Mumbai is increasingly viewed by officials as a real estate asset to be "monetized," rather than as essential public infrastructure (Pinto, 2025).
