The Brothers Grimm & Their Link to Disney Who Were the Brothers Grimm? Jacob Grimm (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) were German scholars, authors and linguists who collected traditional folk tales that had been passed down through generations. Rather than inventing these stories, they travelled through Germany recording them so they would not be lost. In 1812 they published the first volume of Children's and Household Tales, a collection that eventually grew to more than 200 stories. These tales featured heroes, villains, magic, talking animals, enchanted forests and important moral lessons about courage, honesty, kindness, perseverance and the consequences of greed, jealousy and cruelty. The Original Fairy Tales The original Brothers Grimm stories were often darker and more dramatic than the versions many people know today. They were intended as traditional folk tales, where actions had consequences and good eventually triumphed over evil. Although many details have been softened over the years, the heart of the stories remains the same: bravery, hope and kindness can overcome darkness. The Brothers Grimm and Disney Many of Disney's most famous animated films were inspired by stories collected by the Brothers Grimm. Disney reimagined these tales for family audiences, adding memorable songs, humour and happy endings while keeping the unforgettable characters and magical settings that have captivated audiences for over 200 years. Our Production The World of Grimm celebrates the original fairy tales that inspired generations of storytellers. Rather than retelling the Disney films, this production brings together heroes and villains from across the Grimm universe to explore the timeless battle between Good and Evil through dance. Every character plays a part in one magical world where courage, friendship and hope shine brighter than fear, jealousy and darkness.
Devil (Three Golden Hairs) and Boy (Hero) The devil with the three golden hairs
The Devil with the Three Golden Hairs A poor Boy is born with a prophecy that he will one day marry a princess, angering a greedy king who tries repeatedly to prevent his fate. Despite every obstacle placed in his path, the Boy survives through kindness, courage, and a little good fortune. Eventually, the king sends him on an impossible quest—to bring back three golden hairs from the Devil. With the help of a wise old woman, the Boy travels to the Devil's home, where she hides him and secretly plucks the three golden hairs while the Devil sleeps. As she does, she cleverly gathers the answers to several mysteries that help the Boy on his journey home. Armed with the Devil's hairs and newfound wisdom, the Boy completes the impossible task and returns victorious. The king's plans are finally undone, and the Boy's destiny is fulfilled as he marries the princess. The tale celebrates the triumph of courage, cleverness, and perseverance, showing that kindness and determination can overcome even the darkest forces.

Costume Guidance Our production takes inspiration from the original fairy tales and the historical eras in which they are set, rather than the well-known Disney interpretations. The costume images provided are concepts and inspiration. They are intended to guide you on the overall style, silhouette, colour palette and feel of each character. Overall Style Please aim to recreate the look, colours and atmosphere shown in the concept images. Think about the character's personality, the historical era they belong to and the overall aesthetic of the production. Disney Characters If your character also appears in a Disney film, please do not purchase or wear an official Disney-style costume or one that closely resembles the Disney version. Our production is based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, and we want every character to have their own unique identity. Purchasing or Making Your Costume You are welcome to either: Purchase a suitable costume and adapt it if necessary. Make your own costume. Combine purchased items with handmade pieces. Skirts and Movement If your character wears a long or full skirt, you may wish to choose a style that can be hitched or draped up at the front. This can make dancing and moving around the stage much easier while still maintaining the correct period look. Footwear All performers must wear closed-toe shoes. Shoes should be secure, comfortable and suitable for dancing. Hair, Hats and Wigs Think about your character from head to toe. Hair plays a huge part in bringing a character to life. Accessories Accessories can really enhance a costume and help tell your character's story. Aprons, capes, belts, jewellery, scarves and other suitable accessories are all encouraged. However, all accessories must be secure and practical. They should stay in place while dancing and must not create a safety risk for yourself or other performers. Be Your Character We encourage everyone to fully embrace their role. Every costume should feel like a complete character, not simply an outfit.
