UNDER THE MASK In contrast, the suppressed inner self, a realm of desire, sensitivity, theatricality, and emotional excess that exists beneath the surface is represented by the New Romantic movement. By merging New Romantic elements with traditional office silhouettes, the garments expose the psychological tension between external expectation and private identity. This collection explores professionalism as a performed facade of emotional restraint, a social mask constructed to maintain order, neutrality and respectability. UNDER THE MASK DESIGN CONCEPTUnder the Mask explores the idea of professionalism as a mask, where individuals are expected to present themselves as controlled and emotionally restrained in order to meet societal expectations. In professional environments, clothing becomes more than just appearance, it acts as a symbol of discipline, authority, and structure, shaping how a person is perceived. Office wear represents this polished exterior, as it reflects the pressure to maintain a perfect image while suppressing personal emotions and individuality. Beneath this structured surface lies a hidden self filled with emotion, vulnerability and desire. This collection investigates the tension between the external image that society expects and the emotional reality that exists internally. It reflects the silent conflict between outward composure and inner emotion, where professionalism often becomes a performance rather than an authentic expression of identity. The collection draws inspiration from the contrast between the rigid structure of office wear and the expressive nature of the New Romantic movement, which values emotion, softness, and dramatic self-expression. By combining sharp tailoring with soft draping, lace, gathers, the designs create a visual dialogue between control and vulnerability with restraint and expression. This palette reflects the duality between external control and internal emotion. White, black, and grey are drawn from traditional office wear, symbolising structure, discipline and neutrality. Office wear is designed to communicate professionalism, reliability, and control. It follows clear rules about what is appropriate, encouraging the wearer to appear calm, capable, and emotionally neutral. Because of this, office clothing often functions like a uniform, shaping how the body behaves and how identity is presented in public spaces. In this collection, office wear becomes more than work clothing. It represents the outer mask of discipline and respectability. Key garment silhouettes in office wear focus on structured, clean, and streamlined shapes such as fitted blazers, straight or slim trousers, and pencil skirts. Elements like defined shoulders, balanced proportions, and subtle waist shaping help maintain a sharp and refined silhouette.
The New Romantic movement was a British youth subculture (c. 1978–1982) arising from London/Birmingham club scenes as an extravagant, artistic reaction against punk’s austerity. Characterized by flamboyant, androgynous fashion, blending historical, dandy, and futuristic styles. It fueled the synth-pop era, bringing bands like Duran Duran and Visage to fame. New Romantic fashion prioritised feeling, fantasy, and self-expression rather than practicality. Clothes were designed to express mood and identity, not just to serve a purpose.
COLOUR STORY The colour story for Under the Mask is rooted in a restrained monochromatic palette of white, black and grey, contrasted with the deliberate use of red as an accent. This palette reflects the duality between external control and internal emotion. It aligns with the concept of professionalism as a performed “mask.” White black and grey are drawn from traditional office wear, symbolising structure, discipline, and neutrality. These colours reflect the expectations of professionalism, where individuals are often required to present themselves in an emotionally restrained manner. In contrast, red is introduced as a symbolic disruption within this controlled palette. Red represents suppressed emotion, desire, and individuality that exist beneath the surface of professionalism. It acts as a visual metaphor for the “inner self” hidden under the mask, suggesting vulnerability and emotional depth. The selective use of red, allows moments of expression to emerge without overwhelming the overall restraint of the collection.

PILOT MINDMAP EXPERIMENTATION Pilot uniforms have evolved from functional protective clothing into symbols of authority, professionalism, and precision. Inspired by military and naval traditions, their signature elements including epaulettes, rank stripes, structured pockets, ties, and tailored jackets, representing discipline, hierarchy, and trust while ensuring practicality.
CYBERPUNK TECHWEAR Cyberpunk is a sci-fi aesthetic and subculture that blends high technology with gritty, dystopian urban life. It’s “high-tech, low-life”. Cyberpunk fashion emerged alongside the literary and cinematic movement of the early 1980s. William Gibson’s Neuromancer and films like Blade Runner introduced audiences to a dystopian vision of urban decay, corporate domination, and futuristic excess ideas that heavily influenced how people imagined future style. Techwear refers to a category of clothing that includes special fabrics with advanced technologies, construction techniques that go beyond the traditional, as well as cuts that allow maximum mobility.

MODERN ANCESTRY Modern Ancestry is a fashion collection that reimagines traditional Malaysian Malay, Indian and Chinese cultural elements through the lens of contemporary streetwear. It explores how ancestral heritage lives on in the present, not as static history, but as evolving identity expressed boldly through everyday wear. DESIGN CONCEPT MINDMAP YOUNG BOLD REBELLIOUS YOUTHFUL This theme speaks to the younger generation who are proud of their roots but want to express them in a way that feels relevant, personal, and powerful. The collection uses textiles and silhouettes from the past, but reinvents them in casual, urban-ready styles.
NEO HERITAGE Neo-heritage is a modern fashion movement that blends traditional cultural elements with contemporary styles. It takes things like old textiles, patterns, or clothing shapes and reimagines them for a younger, more urban audience. Instead of copying the past, it brings heritage into the present with updated looks that are wearable and relevant. It lets us reconnect with our roots while expressing who we are today. SYMBOLISM OF UNITY THE 3 CULTURES ANYAMAN sample of anyaman with songket Anyaman is a traditional Malay weaving craft made using natural materials such as pandan leaves, rattan, and bamboo. It reflects resourcefulness, patience, and strong cultural heritage through its intricate woven patterns. Malaysia is a multicultural country made up of three main cultures, Malay, Chinese, and Indian. Malay culture inspires traditional textiles like songket and anyaman, known for their beautiful woven textures and strong connection to heritage. Chinese culture contributes elegant silhouettes such as cheongsam and samfu, along with meaningful motifs and refined details. Indian culture adds rich draping, pleating, embroidery, and bold decorative elements seen in garments like the saree.
Streetwear is a style of fashion rooted in urban culture, often influenced by skateboarding, hip-hop, sports, and youth rebellion. It’s casual, expressive, and constantly evolving. Oversized silhouettes, hoodies, and functional details like cargo pockets, chain and zippers define the look. URBAN STREETWEAR

CUDDLES This collection is inspired by my favourite childhood toy named Cuddles, which was a Christmas gift from my parents. Cuddles is a soft, fluffy teddy bear with big, warm eyes and a stitched smile. He is my best friend during childhood, a companion on every adventure, a comfort during stormy nights, and a keeper of my dreams. MINDMAP
