DESIGN & TECHNOLOGYPn FOREWORD There appears to have been no complete Exaltation Ritual for 280 Chapter. Working was done mainly from incompletely typed Ritual for the Principals. On the death of E. Comp. L.W. Greenwood, copies of the P.S.'s Ritual were discovered, typed out by E. Comp. J.H. Brackston OBE, and incorporated in the present completed Ritual. In 1989 Grand Chapter made considerable alterations to the Ritual; subsequently these, together with the further alterations in 2005 and 2007 have been incorporated in the present book of Ritual, retaining as far as possible the ancient Ritual used in 280 Chapter. Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 1 CEREMONY OF OPENING THE CHAPTER At the appointed time, the D.C. enters the Chapter and says: - D.C: Rise, Companions, to receive your 3 Principals. The 3 Sojourners stand behind their chairs. The 3 Principals enter robed J.H.Z. and stand about one pace in front of the Sojourners' chairs, H. having passed behind J. to stand on the right of Z. who stands in the centre. D.C: To order, Companions. All stand to order Z: Companions, assist us to open this H.R.A.C. The D.C. brings the V.S.L., open at Isaiah XII. The 3 Principals take the V.S.L., supporting it on their left hands, with their right hands-on top, in order of seniority, right feet formed in a triangle; they say, again in order of seniority: - We three do meet and agree - in peace, love and unity - the Sacred Name to keep - and never to divulge the same - unless when we - or three such as we - do meet and agree - agree - agree - agree – agree The Principals then salute the open V.S.L., resume the Rev. Sign and stand in line facing E. - J. on North side, H. on South side and Z. in the centre. The Principals then advance East by seven steps, halting and bowing at the third, fifth and seventh step. J: after 3rd step Omnipresent H: after 5th step Omniscient Z: after 7th step Omnipotent Father, supreme Ruler of the Universe, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love Thee and worthily magnify thy Holy Name. All: S.M.I.B. J. and H., taking one step back, facing inwards, exchange places and face East. J. and H. then advance to the East, in step, by seven steps, halting and bowing to the Pedestal after the 3rd, 5th, and 7th -the first step is taken with the left foot, the 4th and 6th with the right. J. and H. halt in the East and face inwards. Z now moves to the East -on the North side - in a similar manner- he halts in the East between J. and H. and faces West. The three Principals then move towards each other to share the Word. Each, standing with the Rev. sign, takes with his right hand the right wrist of the Principal on his left, and with his left hand the left wrist of the Principal on his right. Their right feet form a triangle. After sharing the Word, the Principals face East and receive their sceptres from the D.C They advance to their chairs by seven steps, halting and saluting their sceptres

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 2 raised toward the Triple Tau and mentally repeating the Words of their chairs after the 3rd, 5th, and 7th step. The 3 Sojourners move to the front of their chairs. The Principals face West before their chairs: Z: Companions, in the name of T.T.A.L.G.M.H. I declare this H.R.A.C. duly opened. Z. remains standing while J. and H. descend and unveil the Pedestal - they return to their chairs - The P. Soj. opens the V.S.L. at Isaiah XII with the S. & C. upon it -The angle of the S.& the Pts. of the C. pointing towards the P. The Principals then sit. THE CEREMONY OF ILLUMINATING THE PEDESTAL M.E.Z. requests the D.C. to illuminate the pedestal. If the D.C and A.D.C. are carrying out the work they move to the West together. If other Companions are carrying out the work, the D.C. leads them to the West of the Pedestal. The Comps. give a court bow to the Principals, turn North & South respectively and move to outside the line of the Banners; both then turn to the E. and keeping in step, advance E. to the Pedestal. When parallel with the Pedestal, they turn inwards and advance towards the Pedestal through the Banners, close enough to reach the candles. The Comps. In unison light the candles in the following order: 1. The two lesser lights on the N. & S. 2.The lesser light in the E. and greater light in the W. 3.The greater lights in the N. & S. Between each lighting, the Comps. Step back before proceeding to the next lighting, ensuring unison between the Comps. at all times. When all the candles are lit the Comps. take one pace back, turn W. and return to the W. of the Pedestal as described previously, turn to the E. and give a court bow to the Principals. If the D.C. & A.D.C. have carried out the work, they turn S. and return to their places. If Comps. are carrying out the work, the D.C. remains in the West and conducts them to their places. Z: The origin of this ceremony is found in the Chaldean rite of light and paraphrasing the lengthy rite it says, "And the Priests commanded the people to gather and turn to The East". The two small candles in the North and South are lit. Representing the gathering of the people.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 3 The two Companions do so "Then did light come over the eastern horizon and stretched Its rays afar even unto the western horizon" The large candle in the east and the small candle in the west are now lit to represent the spread of the rays. The two Companions do so "And the light shone all around" the two companions light the two Remaining candles The two Companions now take one pace back - turn to the West - pause - then in unison return to the West of the Columns- stop - turn to the East and make a court bow to the Principals and then return to their places.

II v 1-9 “My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. Proverbs. Chap III v. 13-20. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies; and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left-hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold on her; and happy is everyone that retaineth her. The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By knowledge the depth are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. J. sits. Z: You will now endeavour to find something. P. Soj. guides the Can., puts the S. into his hand and prompts him.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 8 Can: It is found. Z: What is found? Can: Something like a scroll of vellum or parchment. Z: What are its contents? Can: For the want of light, I am unable to discover. Z: Let that want of light remind you that man by nature is the child of ignorance and error, and would ever have remained in a state of darkness, had it not pleased the Almighty to call him to light and immortality, by the revelation of His Holy Will and Word. Arise, wrench forth the Key Stone, and prepare to receive the light of the Holy Word. P. Soj. puts the S. in the Can's bosom, and with D.C. assists him to rise. The D.C. picks up the C. and gives it to the P.Soj. who puts it in the hands of the Can to help him and D. C. wrench forth the K.S.) Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts: According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land; And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts ”.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 9 H. sits. Z: You will now prepare yourself to take the Sac. & Sol. Ob., without which none can be exalted to this Mystic Rite. I further solemnly promise that I will not dare to pronounce the S. and M.N. of T.T.A.L.G.M.H. lightly or irreverently; nor to share its syllables, which may now, for the first time, be communicated to me, unless in the presence and with the assistance of two or more R.A. Comps., or in the body of a lawfully constituted R.A. Chapter when acting as 1st Principal. All these several points I solemnly swear to observe, without evasion, equivocation, or mental reservation of any kind. So help me, T.T.A.L.G.M.H., and keep me steadfast in this the Sac. and Sol. Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 10 Z: We congratulate you on being admitted to the light of our Order, and it is with gratification we express our confidence that your future conduct will fully justify our partiality in exalting you to this Sublime Degree, so truly denominated the essence of Freemasonry. You will now read the contents of the scroll you brought with you out of the vault. Can: reads Genesis 1 v1-3. "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light." Returns scroll to P. Soj Z: Such, my newly exalted Comp., are the first words of that Sacred Volume which contains the record of God's revealed will. Let us therefore bless, praise and magnify his Holy Name, for the knowledge He has vouchsafed unto us, and walk worthily in the light which shines around. You are now at liberty to retire, in order to restore yourself to your personal comforts, and on your return to the Chap. the ceremony will be proceeded with. P. Soj: to Can. and Asst. Soj Salute. the M.E. as Master Mason. All do so with P. Sign and retire. The Principals and Comps. resume their seats. 2. The following passage should be read to the Candidate by the P. Soj. or Janitor in the anteroom, at the same time Scr. E. reads it in the Chapter Room, but this need not be done more than once a year: - “Before you entered the Chapter Room you were told that a story was about to unfold. In the first part of the Exaltation ceremony through which you have just passed, you will not have been aware what the story was. The remainder of the ceremony tells you the story and you will recognise some of the things you did earlier as fitting into the story. When you enter the Chapter Room you will be one of three sojourners or journeymen builders who have just arrived in Jerusalem from Babylon. Although the layout of the Chapter Room has not changed since you retired, it is now intended to represent the Grand Sanhedrin in Jerusalem where Zerubbabel presides with Haggai and Joshua over the Council of Elders which regulated the affairs of the Temple and the religious life of the Jews. Zerubbabel, Haggai and Joshua are represented by the three Companions sitting in the East of the Chapter Room. The rest of the Companions represent members of the Council of Elders. Your colleague, the Principal Sojourner, will explain the story in more detail”

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 11 Jan. reports and Scr. N. reports to Z. Scr. N: M.E. there is a report. Z: Comp. Scr. N, see who seeks admission. Scr. N: Whom have you there? Jan: Three Master Masons from Babylon, who, having heard that you are about to rebuild the Temple to the honour and glory of the Most High, are anxious to sojourn amongst you and to offer their assistance in that great and glorious undertaking. Scr. N: Halt, while I report to the M.E. Closes door and reports. Scr. N: M.E., Master Masons from Babylon, having heard that you are about to rebuild the Temple to the honour and glory of the Most High, are anxious to sojourn amongst you and to offer their assistance in that great and glorious undertaking. Z: Admit them. 1 Asst. Soj., P.Soj. & Can. re-enter and stand in West, P. Soj.in centre, Can. on his left. P. Soj: to Can. & Asst. Soj. Salute the M.E. as Master Masons. Z: Strangers, whence come you? P. Soj: From Babylon M.E. Z: What is your request? P. Soj: Having heard that you are about to rebuild the Temple to the honour and glory of the Most High, we are anxious to sojourn amongst you, and to offer our assistance in that great and glorious undertaking. Z: As no strangers can be permitted to assist in that most holy work, we demand to know who you are. P. Soj: Brethren. of your tribes and families, M.E. Z: But are you not descended from those who fled when the city and Holy Temple were sorely oppressed or are you of that tribe left behind by the Babylonian General. for the purpose of tilling the land? P. Soj: We would scorn to be descended from those who basely fled when the city and Holy Temple were sorely oppressed; neither are we of that menial tribe left behind by the Babylonian General, for the purpose of tilling the land; but we are nobly born, and, like yourselves, descended from a race of patriarchs and kings; Abraham, Isaac. and Jacob. were our forefathers. M.E., we are descended from the royal line of David and the princely tribe of Judah, who, for their sins and those of the people, were led into captivity with Jehoiachim their King, by Nebuzaradan, Captain of the Guard to Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylon, there to remain for seventy years, as was foretold by the Prophet Jeremiah.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 12 The period of our captivity having expired in the first year of the reign of Cyrus, King of Persia, it pleased the Almighty to inspire that noble prince to issue the following proclamation: Thus, saith Cyrus, King of Persia. All the Kingdoms of the earth hath the Lord God of heaven given me; and He hath charged me to build Him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? The Lord His God be with him and let him go up. We eagerly availed ourselves of this opportunity to return to our native country, and have come up accordingly to sojourn among you, and to offer our assistance in rebuilding the T. to the honour and glory of the Most High, who hath promised by the mouth of His holy prophets to establish there His name for ever and give peace to the whole earth. Z: We congratulate you on your noble ancestry, and with pleasure admit you as members of our tribes and families. It only remains for us to enquire on what part of the holy work you wish to be employed. P. Soj: Any position to which your Excellencies. may be pleased to appoint us will be deemed an honour conferred. Z: Humility and docility are sure indications of merit, but, from the lateness of your application, the principal offices are already filled. We will therefore, for the present, engage you to go and prepare the ground for the foundation of the second temple, on the site where the first formerly stood; for which purpose you will be furnished with the proper working implements; but we lay this strict injunction upon you, that should you, during the progress of your labours, make any discovery which you may deem of importance, you will communicate it to none but the Gd. Sanhedrin now sitting. P. Soj: We humbly thank your Excellencies for the trust reposed in us and pledge ourselves to a faithful performance of the duties thereof. D.C. supplies implements as follows; P. Soj. crow, Can. pick, and 1st Asst. Soj. shovel. Z: Go and may the God of your fathers be with you. This is said sitting and at "may" the right hand is extended as if invoking a blessing. P. Soj: Salute the M.E. as Master Masons. Can., P. Soj., & 1 Asst. Soj. retire. After the 3 Sojs. retire for the second time, the Candidate's robes should be put on the middle -P.Soj.- chair. The Janitor will hand into the Chapter the robes of the P. Soj. which should be placed on the North -2nd Asst. Soj.- chair & robes of the 1st Asst. Soj. which should be placed on the South -1st Asst. Soj.- chair.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 13 3. The following passage should be read to the Candidate by the P. Soj. or Janitor in the ante room. At the same time. Scr. E. reads it in the Chapter Room but this need not be done more than once a year: - “You and your two colleagues have just been told to go and clear ground on a building site and given the tools to do so. When you return into the Chapter Room you are back in the Grand Sanhedrin again and one of your colleagues begins to explain what you have discovered on the building site. The area in the centre of the Chapter Room with the white pedestal now represents the interior of a secret vault and is the focal point of the story. Throughout the story, the actual layout of the room never changes.” Jan. reports & Scr N. reports to Z. Ensure that the P.Soj, carries scroll, has cords properly attached & all carry their implements of labour. Scr. N: M.E., there is a report. Z: Comp. Scr. N., see who seeks admission. Scr. N: Goes to door & opens it Who comes here? Jan: The three Sojourners, who were sent to prepare the ground for the foundation of the Second Temple, having made a discovery which they deem of importance, are anxious to communicate the same to the Grand Sanhedrin now sitting. Scr. N: Halt, whilst I report to their Excellencies. Closes door. Scr. N: M.E., the three Sojourners who were sent to prepare the ground for the foundation of the Second Temple, having made a discovery they deem of importance, are anxious to communicate the same to your Excellencies. Z: Admit them. 1 Asst. Soj, P.Soj. and Can. re-enter and stand in the west. P.Soj: Salute the M.E. as Master Mason. Z: We understand you have made a discovery you deem of importance; you will therefore communicate to us the discovery you have made and the circumstances which led to the same. P. Soj: M.E., on resuming our labours early this morning, we discovered a pair of pillars of exquisite design and workmanship. Proceeding onwards, we found six other pairs of equal symmetry and beauty, which, from their situation, appeared to have supported the roof of a subterranean passage or gallery leading to the spot where the M.H.P. formerly stood. Our progress was here impeded by the fragments which had fallen during the conflagration of the former temple. These we cleared away and came on what appeared to be solid rock; but accidentally striking it with my Crowbar, I remarked a hollow sound. I therefore hailed my companions, and he with the Pick loosened the

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 14 earth, which he with the Shovel cleared away, when that which had at first appeared solid rock proved to be a compact piece of masonry wrought in the form of a dome. Knowing from the character of the Architect of the former building that no part thereof had been constructed in vain, we decided to examine it further. We therefore wrenched forth two of the Arch stones when a vault of considerable extent appeared to view. Being all anxious to descend we cast lots. The lot, M.E., was mine. My Comps. then tied this strong cord of lifeline around my body to assist my descent, but being apprehensive of dying from damp, noxious vapours, or other unforeseen causes, I took a smaller line in each hand, wherewith to give preconcerted signals, should I require more liberty, or wish to be drawn up. I was then duly lowered into the vault. On arriving at the bottom, I thought I felt something like the base of a pedestal or column with certain characters engraven thereon, but for the want of light was unable to discover their meaning. I therefore signalled with my left hand for more liberty, and on exploring the vault found this scroll of vellum or parchment, but from the same cause I was unable to read its contents. I then signalled with my right hand, and my companions drew me up, bringing the scroll with me. On arriving at the light of day, we found from the first words that it was part of the long lost V.S.L., promulgated by our Grand Master, Moses at the foot of Mount Horeb, in the wilderness of Sinai. The discovery of this precious treasure naturally stimulated us to further exertions. We therefore enlarged the aperture by removing the Keystone and I descended as before. The sun by this time had attained its greatest altitude, and darting its rays with meridian splendour through the opening, enabled me clearly to distinguish those objects I had before so imperfectly discovered. In the centre of the vault stood a block of white marble, wrought in the form of a altar of incense, a double cube, on the front of which were engraven the initials of the three Grand Master's who presided at the building of the former Temple; namely S.K. of I., H.K of T., and H.AB., together with other mystic characters, whilst a veil covered the face of the altar. I approached it with reverential awe and on raising the veil there beheld engraven on a plate of gold, that which I humbly conceived to be the sacred and Mysterious name of T.T.A.L.G.M.H. I carefully reveiled it with all respect and reverence, gave the agreed-on signal, and was drawn up. Assisted by my Comps. I closed the aperture and we have hastened hither to communicate to your Excellencies the discovery we have made and the circumstances that led thereto. Z: Your narrative bears every appearance of truth, but to convince us you must state what you saw engraven on the Plate of Gold.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 15 P. Soj: That, M.E. we must humbly beg to decline, for we have heard with our ears, and our fathers have declared unto us, that in their days and in the old time before them, it was not lawful for any man to mention the sacred and Mysterious name of T.T.A.L.G.M.H. except for the High Priest, nor he but once a year, and then only when he entered the Holy of Holies. and stood before the Ark of the Covenant to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Z: We admire your pious caution; and your conduct considerably increases our esteem. We shall therefore depute two of our Comps., Scribes. E. & N., to accompany you to the spot, and their report shall determine your reward. P. Soj. and Scrs. E & N. retire to West of Chap. and share Word, E. & N. return to West, advance by 7 steps halting and bowing at 3,5, &7, lift veil on Ped., drop sign and report in turn. - P. Soj. now on left of Can. Scr. E: Right M.E. in every particular. Scr. N: Right M.E. in every particular. Z. then consults with H. & J. Z: Comps., my colleagues in office concur with me in opinion, that as a reward for your zeal and fidelity in having discovered the long-lost Secrets. of the Royal Arch, you should immediately be called to that exalted rank held by our noble ancestors. This is done as follows: - the M.Ms. aprons & strings are removed and passed to Asst. D.C, the white robes are only draped over the shoulders of the three Sojs. The D.C., Scr.E & N. then take up the respective regalia and carry it over their rt. arms, form up with their respective Sojs. in a double file facing North and on the rt. hand of the Sojs. At a word from the D.C. they advance in a semi-circle, arriving in front of the 3 Principals as close to the P. as possible. They do a left turn to face the 3 Ps. The 3 Ps. descend from their chairs, without sceptres.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 17 It is at this part of the ceremony that the manner of sharing the Sac. W. is communicated. Stand to order thus. Can. is instructed to adopt the R. or H. sign. This is called the Reverential or Hailing sign and it is to be used when entering or retiring from the Chapter. The Secret word is given on a series of triangles. Z: The three Comps. stand close together in the form of an equilateral triangle and assume the Reverential or Hailing sign. done Each then brings his right foot forward and turned outwards so that the feet form a second triangle. done Next, with his right hand each grip the right wrist of the Comp. on his left, thus forming a third triangle, and finally with his left hand each grip the left Wrist of the Comp. on his right making a fourth triange. done We are now in a position to share the Word; it is JEHOVAH. The Senior starts and the others follow in an anticlockwise direction, each repeating one syllable, the others following in a like manner. done The second Comp. now starts, and the others follow in a like manner. Finally, the third Comp. starts, and the others then follow. In this way, each Comp. has repeated the Word without pronouncing it in full. All retire to the West, the Sojs. remain standing in front of their chairs, with the Can. in the middle. P. Soj: Thus invested, rewarded, decorated and entrusted by your Excellencies, in this august assembly, we shall ever make it our study to merit the continuance of your approbation, by faithfully, assiduously and zealously discharging the duties of the high vocation to which you have been pleased to call us. Z: Comp……………..., we congratulate you on being exalted to the Supreme Degree of Royal Arch. Masonry, at once the foundation and the keystone of the whole Masonic structure. When you were raised to the third Degree, you were informed that by the untimely death of our Master, H.A., the Secrets of a Master Mason were lost, and that certain substituted Secrets were adopted to distinguish all Master Masons, until time or circumstances should restore the genuine. Those Serects were lost for a period of nearly 500 years and were recovered in the manner which has just been described to you, on this occasion in a somewhat dramatic form, the more forcibly to impress on your mind the providential means by which those ancient Secrets were regained.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 18 Please be seated Comps. We have now arrived at the part of the ceremony when the lectures are given. They are three in number, the Mystical, the Symbolical and the Historical. Owing to their length only the Mystical Lecture will be given this evening and the others on some future evening. Abbreviated version of Mystical Lecture is then given if appropriate. After the lectures have been given, the Can. is brought to the E. before the three Principals. The D. C. stands ready with the Charter of the Chapter. Z. rises and addresses the candidate. Comp................. as the full explanation of the Mystical Lecture is somewhat lengthy, I shall, this evening, give only a brief explanation of the Signs and Word used in this Supreme Degree. The Mystical knowledge of this Supreme Degree comprehends the forms and explanation of the Sacred Signs, the nature and import of the Word and the traditional ceremonies to be observed in sharing and communicating our secrets. In Royal Arch Masonry, we acknowledge five Signs. - corresponding in number to the Five Points of Fellowship, in which the Master Mason has already been instructed; and as the latter point out the relative duties we owe to each other, so do the former mark, in a peculiar manner, the relation we bear to the Most High, as creatures offending against His mighty will and power, yet still the adopted children of His mercy. I will now go through the Signs and you, my newly exalted Comp., will rise and copy me. Can. rises. This is the Penal Sign. shows it. -the only perfect Sign in Freemasonry given with the left hand. This is the Reverential or Hailing Sign. shows it. - given by placing the left hand to the forehead and the right hand on the heart, thus - it is always to be used when entering or retiring from the Chapter and should be directed towards the Pedestal. This is the Penitential or Supplicatory Sign. show sit. - given with uplifted hands and on bended knees. This is the Monitorial Sign. show sit - given by placing the backs of the hands to the sinus of the body, with the thumbs forward, implying a defenceless position. Finally, this is the Fiducial Sign. shows it - given by bending the body forward, with hands in this position, as though we would prostrate ourselves upon the earth. On another evening, Comp..............., these Signs will be explained at length. The D.C. now brings the Can. forward to the Southside of the Pedestal for the following brief explanation of the Word.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 19 On the top of the Alter was a plate of Gold. On the Plate of Gold were a Circle and a Triangle. The Word on the Circle is JEHOVAH, the Grand incomprehensible name of the Most High. As in the case of the Signs, you will be given a full explanation of the Word and signs on some future occasion. All stand Z: As in the course of the evening, you will be called upon for certain fees for your Exaltation, it is proper you should know by what authority we act. This is our Charter from the Supreme Grand Chapter of England, which is open for your inspection on this, or any future evening when the Chapter meets. Be seated Companions. Z. returns the Charter to the D. C., hands the Can. the Book of Royal Arch Regulations and a copy of the Chapter By-Laws and says: - Z: This is the book of Royal Arch Regulations, and these are our By-Laws, both of which I recommend to your serious perusal, as by one you will be instructed in the duties you owe to Royal Arch Masonry in general and, by the other, in those you owe to this Chapter in particular. At this point, while Z. still stands, it is usual for him to congratulate and welcome the Candidate with a few words such as:- Z: Comp.................., I congratulate you on your exaltation to this Supreme Degree and, on behalf of all the Comps., I give you a hearty welcome as a member of this old Chapter, in which I hope you will spend many happy years. The Can. waits while Z. sits, and is then conducted to his place in the Chapter by the D.C.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 20 THE RISINGS After the collection of Alms (if taken in the Chapter Room) the Principals sound and Z. rises: - Z: We enquire for the First time whether any Comp. has aught to propose for the good of Royal Arch Masonry in general or of this, the St Wulstan's Chapter, No. 280, in particular. Z: We enquire for the Second and Third time whether any Comp. has aught to propose for the good of Royal Arch Masonry in general or of this, the St Wulstan's Chapter, No. 280, in particular. Z: We enquire for the Fourth time whether any Comp. has aught to propose for the good of Royal Arch Masonry in general or of this, the St Wulstan's Chapter, No. 280, in particular. CEREMONY OF CLOSING THE CHAPTER Z: Comps., assist us to close this H.R.A.C. The Comps. will share the Word. Principals descend (no sceptres) and share the Word, as do the Comps. All then stand to order with the Rev. Sn. Principals stand in line facing West. Z: Comp. P.Soj., is the word correct? P. Soj: It is, M.E., to the best of my knowledge and belief. D.C. brings the V.S.L. to the three Principals who take it on their left hands, with right hand on top in order of seniority, right feet formed in a triangle. They then say, in order of seniority: - We all do meet and agree - in peace, love and unity - the Sacred Name to keep - and never to divulge the same - unless when we - or three such as we - do meet and agree - agree - agree - agree. The three Principals then salute the V.S.L. in turn. It is taken around the Chapter when the Past Principals salute it open and the Comps. closed.. The Principals collect their sceptres while the V.S.L is being taken around and stand forming a triangle with their sceptres - the Past Principals and Comps. stand to order with the Rev. Sn. after each has saluted the V.S.L.. Z: Glory to God on High. H: On earth peace. J: Goodwill towards men. Z: Comp. P.Soj., the labours of this Convocation being ended, you have my command to close this H.R.A.C. P.Soj: In the Name of T.T.A.L.G.M.H. and by command of the M.E., I close the Chapter. closes the V.S.L.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 21 THE CEREMONY OF RETURNING OUR SECRETS TO THE SAFETY OF DARKNESS In complementing the Illuminating of the Pedestal, this Ceremony of Returning our Secrets to the Safety of Darkness should remind the departing Companions that what they have learned in the Chapter should guide their lives beyond. The movements and wording of the Ceremony are as follows: M.E.Z.: Companion Sojourners, you will return our Secrets to the safety of darkness. The three Sojourners step forward. Then, having received the snuffers from the Prin. Soj. If needed, the 1st Asst. Soj. and the 2nd Asst. Soj. walk respectively along the South and Northsides of the Ensigns, at an equal pace, halting when they are level with the Pedestal. They then turn inwards, facing each other across the Pedestal, close enough to the candles to conduct the following ceremony, whilst obviously ensuring their surplices are not in danger from the candles! P.Soj.: "And the lives of the People were enlightened by the Secrets they had learned". The two Large Candles in the West are then extinguished to represent the Light now shining within the People. The two Companions do so. "And the People pledged to maintain these Secrets in their hearts by day and by night." The Large Candle in the East and the Small Candle in the West are extinguished to represent the Light of the Secrets seen throughout the lives of the People. The two Companions do so. "Then the Priests commanded the People to disperse and return to their homes." The two Small Candles in the North and South are extinguished representing the Light now reposing in the Peoples' hearts beyond the veils of the Temple. The two Companions do so. The Asst. Sojs. take one pace back, pause, turn together to the West, pause, then in unison return to the West of the Ensigns to line up with the Prin. Soj. All three Sojourners court bow to the Principals and then return to their places. In our Chapters, most M.E.Z.s read the Illuminating of the Pedestal. This is perfectly acceptable, but of course they may recite it if they have the confidence to do so accurately. Similarly, the Principal Sojourner may recite or read the above words.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 22 The importance is in retaining the dignity of the ceremony. IPZ: (Mixes Ls) Companions, this Convocation being closed, nothing now remains but, according to ancient custom, to lock up our Secrets in a safe and sacred repository, uniting in the act of - Fidelity, Fidelity, Fidelity, Fidelity - and may God be with us all. St. Wulstan's Prayer is given by IPZ. “O Almighty God, who willest to be glorified in thy Saints and didst raise up thy servant Wulstan to shine as a light in the world, shine, we pray thee in our hearts, that we also in our generation may show forth thy praises, who hast called us out of darkness into thy marvellous light”. All: S.M.I.B. D.C.: Will the Comps. remain standing while the three Principals, G.C. Officers, Provincial Officers and Visitors retire from the Chapter. The 3 Principals, in order J. Z. H., with S......s over their Rt. arms, turn L. and retire from the Chapter.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 23 MYSTICAL LECTURE First principal The Mystical Lecture - Address of the First Chair This Lecture should be given on each occasion that an Exaltation takes place. If considered necessary, the Lecture may be given by a competent Companion below the rank of First Principal. If the Lecture is given by more than one Companion, suitable breakpoints occur at the end of each section as indicated below and may be adopted as convenient. If given by a PZ, he should assume the Robe and Sceptre of Z, but not the collar. Part 1 by "Z" or another Companion Companions, tradition informs us, that in the building of King Solomon's Temple, an immense number of masons were employed and that their names or marks were found engraved on some part or other of the building; but the names of the three Grand Masters who presided were nowhere to be found until, as was graphically illustrated in the earlier part of the ceremony, they were discovered by the three Sojourners who, returning from captivity in Babylon, had been instructed to prepare the ground for the foundation of the Second Temple. The Sojourners discovered a vault and knowing that no part of the former structure had been designed in vain, decided to explore it further. In its centre was a pedestal, but they could not examine this until the darkness was dispersed - so should we not expect to understand immediately all that we encounter but try to comprehend its meaning by continued study and enquiry. When the glorious light of the sun revealed the contents of the vault, the pedestal was seen as a block of white marble, wrought in the form of an Altar of Incense, a double cube. It is represented here by the pedestal which you see before you. On the top of the pedestal was a plate of gold. White, as I am sure you are well aware, is an emblem of innocence, as gold is of purity. Engraved on the front of the pedestal were found the initials of the three Grand Masters who had presided at the building of the former temple, namely State names in full S. K. of I., H. K. of T., and H.AB., placed there to perpetuate their names as well as to commemorate the circumstances and proceedings attending the erection of that structure. There was likewise the triple tau. points to it. The tau, by reason of its having been used to distinguish the innocent and those who escaped unhurt in battle, has ever been considered a mark or sign of life. The triple tau alludes symbolically to the Deity, by Whom, the gloomy, horrific and unshapen chaos was changed into regular form and peaceful existence." P. Soj. and Candidate take up positions on the South side of the Pedestal. Part 2 "On this plate of gold are a triangle and circle. These mathematical figures have ever been selected as referring to the deity or some Divine attribute. The triangle has long

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 24 been considered a sacred symbol. In times of antiquity names of God and symbols of Divinity were often enclosed in triangular figures. The circle is an emblem of eternity, for as it has neither beginning nor end, it may justly be deemed emblematic of God, who is without beginning of days or end of years and it continually reminds us of that great hereafter when we hope to enjoy eternal life. On the circle or plate of gold is that great, awful, tremendous and incomprehensible Name of the Most High. It signifies, I AM THAT I AM, the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last, who WAS and IS and IS TO COME, the Almighty." is the Sacred and Mysterious Name of the actual, future, eternal, unchangeable and all-sufficient God, who alone has His being in and from Himself and gives to all others their being; so that HE IS what HE WAS, WAS what HE IS and ever shall remain both WHAT HE WAS and WHAT HE IS from everlasting to everlasting, all creatures being dependent on His mighty will and power. Companions, I charge you, should you ever be about to mention that Sacred and Mysterious Name lightly or irreverently, pause, place your finger on your lips and remember your Obligation." Part 3 "On being restored to light you beheld the Three Principals holding aloft their sceptres so that they formed a triangle. The sceptre of the Third Principal, Joshua, denotes the priestly function. That of the Second Principal, Haggai, represents the prophetical roles. These two sceptres define the limits of earthly power which the sceptre of the First Principal, Zerubbabel, represents, thus illustrating that on earth power must be exercised under and subject to the laws of our Divine creator. By this vision therefore, you are led to see the Royal Arch as indeed the climax of pure, ancient Freemasonry, having virtue for its aim and the glory of God for its object, while the eternal welfare of man is considered in its every part, point and letter. Suffice it to say that it sees the teaching of the Craft in the light of eternity, being founded on the Sacred Name of God who was from the beginning, is now and ever shall remain, both one and the Same forever. This Supreme Degree inspires its members with the most exalted ideas of God and leads to the exercise of the purest and most devout piety; a reverence for the incomprehensible True and Living God Most High, the Eternal Ruler of the Universe, the elemental life and primordial source of all its principles, the very spring and fount of all its virtues. Comps. I charge you, should you ever be about to mention that Sacred and Mysterious Name lightly or irreverently, pause, place your finger to your lips, - does it – and remember your Obligation. Here finishes the Mystical Lecture

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 25 SYMBOLICAL LECTURE Second principal H: stands - Companions, the forms, symbols and ornaments of ROYAL ARCH MASONRY together with the rites and ceremonies at present in use among us, were adopted by our predecessors at the building of the Second Temple, as well to preserve in our minds the Providential means by which those ancient secrets were regained as to engraft in our hearts those exalted lessons of morality which we, as members of this Supreme Degree, are bound to practice. sits The form of a Royal Arch Chapter, when properly arranged, approaches as nearly as circumstances will permit, that of a Catenarian Arch. Thus, we preserve a memorial of the Vaulted Shrine in which the Sacred Name was deposited; and from the impenetrable nature of this, the strongest of all architectural forms, we learn the necessity of guarding our mysteries from profanation by the most inviolable secrecy. It also strongly typifies that invariable adherence to social order and spirit of fraternal union which have given energy and permanency to the whole constitution of Freemasonry, thereby enabling it to survive the wreck of mighty empires, and resist the destroying hand of time. And as the subordinate members of the Catenarian Arch naturally gravitate towards the centre or keystone, which connects and compresses the whole structure together, so are we taught to look up with reverence and submit with cheerfulness to every lawfully constituted authority, whether of Masonic or Civil regulation. The central arch stones are represented by the three Principals of the Chapter. For as the ancient secrets of the Royal Arch could only be obtained by wrenching forth the Arch stones thereof, so a perfect knowledge of this Supreme Degree can only be gained by passing through those several chairs. In Royal Arch Masonry we acknowledge six lights - three lesser and three greater. The three lesser represent the Light of the Law and the Prophets, and by their number allude to the Patriarchal, Mosaical and Prophetical dispensations. The three greater represent the Sacred Name itself, and are emblematical of the creative, preservative and annihilative powers of the Deity. These lights are arranged in equilateral triangles, each of the lesser lights bisecting a line drawn between two of the greater, thus geometrically dividing the greater triangle into three lesser triangles at its extremities, which by their union form a fourth in the centre, all equal and equilateral. This symbolical arrangement corresponds to the mysterious triple tau he walks to E. and points to the Central White Banner, which has two right angles at each of its exterior lines and two at their union in the centre; in all, eight right angles corresponding with the number in the four triangles; for the three angles of every triangle are together equal to two right angles. It also serves to illustrate the jewel worn by the Companions he exhibits his Jewel of the Order, which by its intersections forms a given number of angles: these may be taken in five several combinations, and when reduced to their amount in right angles,

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 26 will be found equal to the five regular Platonic bodies representing the four elements and the sphere of the universe. The ribbon worn by the companions (points to his own) is a sacred emblem, denoting light, being composed of the two principal colours with which the veils of the Temple and the Tabernacle were interwoven; it has, therefore, ever been considered an emblem of regal dignity and power. Its sacredness is further depicted by its irradiated form, signifying Justice tempered with Mercy. remains standing. The ensigns on the staves borne by the Companions are the distinctive bearings of the twelve tribes of Israel, and figurative of the peculiar blessing bequeathed to each by the patriarch Jacob, who, shortly before his death, assembled his Sons together for that purpose, as we find recorded in the 49th Chapter of the Book of Genesis; the tribes more particularly pointed out in the 2nd Chapter of the Book of Numbers. The four principal banners represent the leading standards of the four divisions of the army of Israel, which bore devices of a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. A man to personify intelligence and understanding; a lion to represent strength and power; an ox to denote the ministration of patience and assiduity; and an eagle to indicate the promptness with which the will and pleasure of the GREAT I AM are ever executed. The bearings on the Sceptres the Principals hold them up to view denote the points Regal, Prophetical and Sacerdotal offices, all of which ever were and still ought to be conferred in a peculiar manner accompanied by the communication of particular secrets. remains standing The B.S and C. are the appropriate emblems of the three Grand Masters who presided at the building of the former Temple. The B. denotes the wisdom of K.S., the S. the strength of K.H., and the C. the exquisite skill of H.A.B.; but the truly speculative Mason ever regards them as the unerring standards of the Wisdom, Truth and Justice of the M.H. His wisdom is amply exemplified in the V. of the S.L. which contains the record of His mighty acts and is the register of His revealed will. His truth is as justly represented by the S., that being the acknowledged symbol of strength and the criterion of perfection, while His unerring and impartial justice in having defined for our instruction the limits of good and evil, assigning to each its due proportion of pleasure and pain, is elucidated by the C., by which instrument we are enabled to measure and ascertain the limits of all geometrical figures, and reduce our ideas of their proportion and equality to a given standard. The Sword and the Trowel were adopted by Royal Arch Masons to commemorate the valour of those worthy men who assisted at the building of the Second Temple, who, with T. in hand and S. by their side, were ever ready to defend the City and Holy Sanctuary against the unprovoked attacks of their enemies, thereby leaving a sacred and impressive lesson to future ages; that next to an implicit obedience to all lawfully constituted authority, a manly and determined resistance to lawless violence is the first of social duties. remains standing.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 27 The S., P.A. and C.B. may be termed with the W.Ts. of this degree, having been the implements with which the three faithful Sojourners were furnished to prepare the ground for the foundations of the Second Temple:- the S. to clear away the loose earth and the fragments of the former building; the P.A. to loosen the stones and the C.B. to take purchases. These we spiritualise thus; the work of the S. reminds us of the mortal state in which the body is laid in the grave in burial. The stroke of the P.A. reminds us of the last trumpet's sound, when the grave shall be opened and deliver up its dead; and the C.B., being and emblem of uprightness, typifies the erect posture in which the body will arise on that awful day to meet its tremendous but merciful Judge. Thus, the W.Ts. of this Degree teach us not only to contemplate the close of this, our mortal existence, but also to look forward with hope to that better life which is to come; and that however and wherever the remains of the body may be disposed of after Death, we may hope with humble but holy confidence, that both body and spirit will finally arise into immortal life and everlasting bliss. Here finishes the Symbolical Lecture HISTORICAL LECTURE Third Principal J. or M.E.Z.: Companions, there are three epochs in the history of Freemasonry which ularly merit your attention. They are the openings of the First or Holy the Second or Sacred Lodge, and the Third or Grand and Royal Lodge, win The First or Holy Lodge was opened two years after the exodus of the children of Israel from their Egyptian bondage, by Moses, Aholiab and Releel, on consecrated ground at the foot of Mount Horeb in the wilderness of Sinai, where the Children of Israel had pitched their tents, and gathered themselves together to offer up praises and thanksgivings to the M.H. for their signal deliverance from the hands of the Egyptians. There, but before that time, the Almighty had revealed himself to his faithful servant Moses, and commissioned him His High Ambassador, of wrath to Pharaoh and his people, but of freedom and salvation to the House of Jacob. There were delivered the forms of those mysterious prototypes, the Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant, and the Tables of the Sacred Law engraven by the finger of the M.H. with sublime and comprehensive precepts of moral and religious duty. There also were dictated by His unerring wisdom, those peculiar forms of civil and religious polity, which by separating His once favoured people from all other nations, consecrated Israel a chosen vessel to His service. For these reasons this was designated the First or Holy Lodge. S.K. of L., H., K. of T. and H.A.B. presided over the Second of Sacred Lodge which opened in the bosom of the Holy Mount Moriah, on the very centre of the ground where the Solemn Sanctuary of the Sanhedrin was afterwards erected. On that consecrated spot Abraham proved his intuitive faith by not refusing to offer up his beloved son Isaac, a destined victim on the Altar of his God, when it pleased the Almighty to provide a more acceptable sacrifice. There, on the threshing floor of

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 28 Araunah, the Jebusite, David offered up the mediatorial sacrifice by which the plague was stayed; and there, in a vision, were revealed to him the plans of that magnificent Temple afterwards erected by his illustrious son, of whom God said, "He shall build the an house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever". For these reasons this was denominated the Second or Sacred Lodge. The Third or G. and R.L. was opened at Jerusalem, shortly after the return of the children of Israel from their Babylonish Captivity, by Z. Prince of the people: H., the Prophet; and J., the son of Josedech the High Priest. Then it was that the kingly power was restored, in the person of Z., to the royal line of David and princely tribe of Judah. Nor was all vestige therof effaced until after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans under Titus in the 70th year of the present era. Therefore, to commemorate this restoration, this was called the Third or Grand and Royal Lodge and we have in the present Chapter a resemblance of those Grand Originals. For every regular well-formed and properly constituted R.A. Chapter, we acknowledge the representatives of the Grand and Holy Royal Arch Chapter at Jerusalem. The three Principals represent Zerubbabel, Haggai, and Joshua, whose names they bear. The two Scribes represent Ezra and Nehemiah, lectors and expounders of the Sacred Law and attendants on the Grand Sanhedrin. Yourselves represent the three Sojourners, who for their zeal and fidelity in having discovered the long-lost secrets if the R.A., were rewarded with seats among the princes and rulers of the people, represented by the rest of the Companions. Here finishes the Historical Lecture

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 29 SYMBOLICAL LECTURE In Catechetical form M.E.Z. invites H. to deliver the Symbolical Lecture. H. in turn invites five Companions to assist him. As he calls their names, they rise and form a line at the NW corner of the Chapter facing S., the first named nearest to the E H: rises Companions, the forms, symbols and ornaments of Royal Arch Masonry, together with the rites and ceremonies at present in use among us, were adopted by our predecessors at the building of the Second Temple, as well as to preserve in our minds the Providential means by which those ancient secrets were regained as to engraft in our hearts those exalted lessons of morality which we, as members of this Supreme Degree, are bound to practise sits. Companion A. Comp. A. takes one step forward What is the form of a Royal Arch Chapter? Comp. A: The form of a Royal Arch Chapter, when properly arranged, approaches as nearly as circumstances will permit that of a Catenarian Arch. points to it. Thus we preserve a memorial of the Vaulted Shrine in which the Sacred Word was deposited; and from the impenetrable nature of this, the strongest of all architectural forms, we learn the necessity of guarding our mysteries from profanation by the most inviolable secrecy. It also strongly typifies that invariable adherence to social order and spirit of fraternal union which has given energy and permanency to the whole constitution of Freemasonry, thereby enabling it to survive the wreck of mighty empires and resist the destroying hand of time. And as the subordinate members of the Catenarian Arch naturally gravitate towards the centre or keystone, which connects and compresses the whole structure together, so are we taught to look up with reverence and submit with cheerfulness to every lawfully constituted authority, whether of Masonic or Civil regulation. The central arch stones are represented by the three Principals of the Chapter points to them. For as the ancient secrets of the Royal Arch could only be obtained by wrenching forth the arch stones thereof, so a perfect knowledge of this Supreme Degree can only be obtained by passing through those several chairs takes one step back. H: Companion B. Comp. B. takes one step forward What lights do we recognise in Royal Arch Masonry? Comp. B. In Royal Arch Masonry, we acknowledge six lights points to them - three lesser and three greater. The three lesser represent the Light of the Law and the Prophets, and by their number allude to the Patriarchal, Mosaical and Prophetical dispensations. The three greater represent the Sacred Word itself, and are emblematical of the creative, preservative and annihilative powers of the Deity. H: These lights are arranged in equilateral triangles, each of the lesser lights bisecting a line drawn between two of the greater, thus geometrically dividing the greater triangle into three lesser triangles at its extremities, which by their union

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 30 form a fourth in the centre, all equal and equilateral. This symbolical arrangement corresponds to the mysterious triple tau points to the central White Banner, which has two right angles at each of its exterior lines and two at their union in the centre; in all, eight right angles corresponding with the number in the four triangles; for the three angles of every triangle are together equal to two right angles. It also serves to illustrate the jewel worn by the Companions exhibits his, which by its intersections forms a given number of angles; these may be taken in five several combinations, and when reduced to their amount in right angles, will be found equal to the five regular platonic bodies representing the four elements and the sphere of the universe takes one step back. H: Companion C. Comp. C. takes one step forward What is the significance of the ribbon worn by the Companions? Comp. C: The ribbon worn by the Companions exhibits his is a sacred emblem, denoting light, being composed of the two principal colours with which the veils of the Temple and Tabernacle were interwoven; it has therefore ever been considered an emblem of regal dignity and power. Its sacredness is further depicted by its irradiated form, signifying Justice tempered with mercy. H: Explain the ensigns and banners. Comp. C: The ensigns on the staves points to them borne by the Companions are the distinctive bearings of the twelve tribes of Israel, and are figurative of the peculiar blessing bequeathed to each by the patriarch Jacob who, shortly before his death, assembled his Sons together for that purpose, as we find recorded in the 49th Chapter of the Book of Genesis; the tribes are more particularly pointed out in the 2nd Chapter of the Book of Numbers. The four principal banners points to them represent the leading standards of the four divisions of the army of Israel, which bore devices of a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. A man to personify intelligence and understanding; a lion to represent strength and power; an ox to demonstrate the ministration of patience and assiduity; and an eagle to indicate the promptness with which the will and pleasure of the GREAT I AM are ever executed takes one step back. H: Companion D. Comp. D. takes one step forward The Principals carry sceptres; what do the bearings on these sceptres denote? Comp. D: The bearings on the sceptres denote points as each Principal holds his up to view the regal, prophetical and sacerdotal offices, all of which ever were and still ought to be conferred in a peculiar manner accompanied by the communication of particular secrets. H: How do Royal Arch Masons symbolise the three great lights of Craft Masonry? Comp. D: The B., S. and C. are the appropriate emblems of the three Grand Masters who presided at the building of the former Temple. The B. denotes the wisdom of K.S., the S. the strength of K.H. and the C. the exquisite skills of H.A.B.; but the truly

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 31 speculative Mason ever regards them as the unerring standards of the Wisdom, Truth and Justice of the M.H. His Wisdom is amply exemplified in the V. of the S.L., which contains the record of His mighty acts and is the register of His revealed will. His Truth is justly represented by the S., that being the acknowledged symbol of strength and the criterion of perfection; while His unerring and impartial Justice, in having defined for our instruction the limits of good and evil, assigning to each in due proportion of pleasure and pain, is elucidated by the C., by which instrument we are enabled to measure and ascertain the limits of all geometrical figures, and deduce our ideas of their proportion and equality to a given standard takes one step back. H: Companion E. Comp. E. takes one step forward What do the Sword and Trowel signify? Comp. E: points The Sword and Trowel were adopted by Royal Arch Masons to commemorate the valour of those worthy men who assisted at the building of the Second Temple who, with T. in hand and S. by their side, were ever ready to defend the City and Holy Sanctuary against the unprovoked attacks of their enemies, thereby leaving a sacred and impressive lesson to future ages; that, next to an implicit obedience to all lawfully constituted authority, a manly and determined resistance to lawless violence is the first of social duties. H: What were the implements made use of by the Sojourners who were sent to prepare the ground for the foundation of the Second Temple? Comp. E: points The S., P.A. and C.B. They may be termed the W.T.s of this degree, having been the implements with which the three faithful Sojourners were furnished to prepare the ground for the foundations of the Second Temple; the S. to clear away the loose earth and the fragments of the former building; the P.A. to loosen the stones, and the C.B. to take purchases. These we spiritualise thus: the work of the S. reminds us of the mortal state in which the body is laid in the grave in burial. The stroke of the P.A. reminds us of the last trumpet's sound, when the grave shall be opened and deliver up its dead; and the C.B., being an emblem of uprightness, typifies the erect posture in which the body will arise on that awful day to meet its tremendous but merciful Judge. takes one step back. H: rises Thus the W.T.s of this Degree teach us not only to contemplate the close of this, our mortal existence, but also to look forward with hope to that better life which is to come; and that, however and wherever the remains of the body may be disposed of after death, we may hope with humble but holy confidence that both body and spirit will finally arise into immortal life and everlasting bliss sits. H. thanks the five Companions who then return to their seats.

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 32 EXPLANATION AFTER EXALTATION Companion …………………, with the permission of their Excellencies, I would like to take a few moments to explain a few things to you, so that what you have just experienced does not leave you totally bewildered. I hope it also makes you feel more at home and comfortable when you come to the next meeting, which we call Convocations. As we move around the Chapter, I will draw similarities with the Craft with which I know you are familiar. Starting at the East, the Craft is ruled by the Worshipful Master and assisted by his two Wardens. In the Royal Arch we are ruled by three Principals, namely Zerubbabel (the First Principal) Haggai (the Second Principal) and Joshua (the Third Principal). Joshua is known as Jeshua in some Chapters. At Provincial level we have five officers who make up the Provincial Executive. points them out if present The Most Excellent Grand Superintendent, the Deputy Grand Superintendent, the Second Provincial Grand Principal, the Third Provincial Grand Principal and Provincial Grand Scribe Ezra. Their roles are similar to the Provincial Grand Master, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, the two Provincial Grand Wardens and the Provincial Grand Secretary in the Craft, except that in the Royal Arch the Second and Third Provincial Grand Principals are rulers in their own right. Moving down the West side of the Chapter, we have Scribe Nehemiah, and in the North, we have Scribe Ezra. In Royal Arch Ritual they are described as ‘Expounders of the Sacred Law and attendants on the Grand Sanhedrin’. Their duties are similar to the Inner Guard and Lodge Secretary in the Craft. Also in the West, we have the Principal Sojourner, the First Assistant Sojourner and the Second Assistant Sojourner. In the Craft ceremonies you were conducted by Deacons, in this ceremony you were conducted by the Sojourners and in parts of it you represented one of the Assistant Sojourners. In the Craft, during your Third-Degree Ceremony, you learnt that with the death our Master, Hiram Abiff, the genuine secrets of a Master Mason were lost, and substituted secrets were adopted until time or circumstance restores the genuine secrets. As you know, the First Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, and the Israelites were taken into exile in Babylon. After many years hearing that the Temple was to be rebuilt, three Sojourner Master Masons arrive to offer their assistance in rebuilding the Temple. Finding that the principal offices had already been filled, they are engaged to assist in the preparations of the ground for the foundations. This teaches us that, however lowly the task we are assigned, we should undertake it with humility, for we never know what our true reward will be. The three Sojourners discovered the vault and

Royal Arch Chapter of Saint Wulstan’s No.280 33 therein the Sacred Name of the Great Architect and were rewarded with seats among Princes and Rulers. When you were restored to light earlier in the ceremony, you may recall that looking down the vault, you could see the Companions holding staves bearing the ensigns of the Twelve Tribes of Israel forming an Arch. At the far end of the Arch was a white double cube, the Altar of Incense, with the Sacred and Mysterious Name written on a plate of gold on the top. If you remember, the three Sojourners had to clear an entry into the vault and wait for the sunlight to penetrate it. This reminds us that, however dark and difficult the path through life, your Companions are there to support you at either side. Now, let’s reflect on your Masonic journey so far. In the First Degree, you emphasised your belief in a Supreme Being and you learned of your duty to your neighbour and yourself and taking your place in an organised and civilised society. In the Second Degree, you learned the need to develop your mental and corporeal faculties and cultivate those Liberal Arts and Sciences that help you to play a useful part in life. In the Third Degree, you contemplated the last hour of your existence on this Earth, and the ceremony ended with the loss of the secrets of a Master Mason. This led you to suppose that there was more to be revealed and appreciated and led you to the Royal Arch Exaltation Ceremony you have just experienced, which will lead you to a greater knowledge and understanding of the nature and glory of God. The fact that the Exaltation Ceremony is based on the rebuilding of the Temple is a symbolic reminder that what you are really building is a Temple within yourself, ready for your last hour, when you will hopefully find yourself in the presence of Almighty God. He will not consider your material wealth or your station in life but rather what you have built in the temple of your heart. The original motto of the Royal Arch was ‘Know thyself’. Companion, there is much more that could be explained, however I am sure that your proposer, Chapter Mentor or other Companions, will only be too pleased to answer your questions, to ensure that you gain a full and complete enjoyment of the Royal Arch.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
