Week 1 Creation and the Fall This Week's Reading: Genesis 1-3 WHAT YOU WILL UNDERSTAND See why the Bible begins with goodness, trust, freedom, and the first promise of redemption. CHAPTER FOCUS CATHOLIC LENS Creation, human dignity, original sin, mercy, and the first promise of victory over evil. THE STORY IN SIMPLE WORDS In the beginning, there is only God. Genesis opens with a sentence that sets the tone for all of Scripture: everything that exists comes from God. The world is not the result of chance or conflict, but of intention. God speaks, and reality responds. Light appears. Order emerges. Life unfolds step by step. The world is formed with care and purpose, and again and again Scripture affirms that what God creates is good. Creation is not hostile or flawed. It is a gift. At the center of this creation stands the human person. Man and woman are created in the image and likeness of God, which means they are capable of knowing Him, loving Him, and freely responding to Him. Unlike the rest of creation, they are invited into relationship. They are placed in the Garden of Eden, a space of harmony and abundance. Nothing is missing. There is no fear, no shame, no division. Humanity lives in peace with God, with one another, and with the world around them. God gives one command: they may eat from every tree of the garden except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This command is not a trap or an arbitrary test. It establishes trust. Love is replaced by self-protection. The harmony of creation fractures. The relationship between humanity and God is damaged. Yet the story does not end in despair. God seeks the human beings who are hiding. He speaks to them. Judgment follows, but so does mercy. In the midst of consequences, God makes a promise: the offspring of the woman will one day defeat the serpent. Evil will not have the final word. This promise, hidden within the story of the Fall, becomes the quiet thread that runs through the entire Bible. It is the reason the story continues. The relationship between man and woman is strained. Even creation itself becomes resistant. Suffering and death enter human history. The temptation does not begin with open rebellion, but with a question that introduces doubt. God's word is subtly distorted. His goodness is questioned. The possibility of becoming like God, without God, is offered. From this point forward, Scripture is no longer simply about creation. It becomes the story of salvation. Every covenant, every law, every prophet, and ultimately the coming of Jesus is God's response to what was lost in the beginning. Understanding these first chapters means understanding why the rest of the Bible exists at all. The world is good, but broken. Humanity is loved, but wounded.
